Gord Downie solo tour next summer? - direwolf74 - 10-21-2009

I was just reading this interview with Julie Doiron and came across an interesting tidbit near the end of the article:

"Doiron began her music career with Maritime rock band Eric's Trip before teaming with Ottawa's Wooden Stars, winning a Juno Award for her album Julie Doiron and the Wooden Stars in 2000. Meanwhile, she and guitarist Fred Squire will continue touring the new album until spring, when they join Attack in Black's Dan Romano for a quick tour of their delightful folk album Daniel, Fred & Julie. Doiron will then back The Tragically Hip's Gord Downie on his new solo tour next summer."

I'm guessing this means a new Gord solo album is on the horizon.

Here's the full interview:

what is it that gord does solo that he can't do with the rest of the band? it always makes me nervous to hear about him doing solo albums. In fact, I even suspect that the IVL and IBE tours were pretty uninspired partially because of the solo albums...

I find that his solo work is much more "CBC 3 friendly" if I can use that as description.

Play music with people who aren't in The Tragically Hip would be my guess.

I think we were all worried at first including the band. When I first listened to IVL I thought to myself "this is the sound of a band breaking up." It's good music but defiantly the bands WHITE ALBUM. You can feel the space between them.I think that is why Bob Rock was brought in for World Container. The Hip are in a safe place now. They are growing and producing exciting new music. Even if Gord "hits" with his solo work The Hip will always be his first love.

Re: Gord Downie solo tour next summer? - LarryIrvine - 10-22-2009

faith folks...I welcome it....as I did Rob Baker's attempt (opinion: with less success)

nothing wrong with a little diversication in your 40's....so I have been told.

The Hip aren't just any band and have proved it all once or twice.

On the IVL comment - as IBE was releasing there was an article (searching for it) interviewing Rob Baker and they went album by album - he had no comment - I found that scary...

I'm not worried at all. Gord went back to the Hip twice after both of his solo albums, and all five of them have stated numerous times that they have no plans to call it quits anytime soon. I have no problem whatsoever with the boys branching out and trying different things with other musicians. Besides, "Coke Machine Glow" is arguably one of the greatest Canadian albums ever recorded, and I'll stand by that opinion until the day I die.

As for the new Downie record, could this possibly be the long rumored collaboration with the Sadies that we've heard about?? The guys in the Sadies had mentioned a little while ago that the album was already in the can and just waiting to be released in some official capacity. I'm hoping this is it.

Agreed. If Downie never branched out and did those solo albums, the world would have been deprived of two absolutely brilliant pieces of work, work of which the Hip themselves would never ever have made.

? It was posted in Denver 2003 that gord and his miracles would play there. They didn't show. Yep, They left every one in Denver hanging. How many people does it take for them to put on a show?
I had tickets.

So, From everyone here in Denver(3 million+) Whoop-D-fricken-doo.!!!!!

And from me....Gord. I'll be there on the first. (yeah, right!)

My invitation is for the hip to come to my house and meet my little boy, sasha, me and wife here in Sheridan, Wyoming.

That would make it even. I will see them this summer.

Love
Kevala
