An Open letter to The Tragically Hip - Thetraghip - 09-25-2009

I have been a fan for over 10 years now. Tonight was the 12 time I have seen you guys live. I felt like I had to some how try to send a message your way to express my feelings as you guys get the chance to do it live and through your music.
At the end of every show, Gord thanks the crowed and music lovers for coming out. I have never missed a chance to say "No, Thank you" every time you drop that line. Speaking on behalf of all Hip Fans, thank you so much for doing what you guys do. You guys never take a night off and every night you bring the absolute best show ever. Ive been to tons of concerts, probably over 60 and the top 12 ive ever seen are you guys.
We appreciate the fact that you dont play single after single. Its nice to hear you belt out "OFF THE COAST OF FRANCE" as much we appreciate hearing you sing "wheather man wet fingers the sky". You ended tonights show with 'Fire in the hole' which no other band would have the courage to do so.

I met you guys one night in Calgary with -25 temps outdoors and you stayed to sign all autographs. Very classy. I pleaded Bobby "to never stop making music" and he responded by saying "I wouldnt know what to do with myself if I did". Seriously. On behalf of everyone who has struggled in life and listened to Fiddlers Green, or to anyone who rocked out to Pigeon Camera in the back of a broken down neon travelling across canada, or to anyone who gets a smile everytime they hear "under pressure, under pressure, COURAGE!!" or to anyone who gets a rush singing "Him? here? now? no!"...please do not ever stop playing music. You might have a clue how happy you make people, but im here to tell you its tenfold.

We all appreciate what you do. I will buy ever seat in the house if it means seeing you guys 1 more time. You represent Canada like no other band. I was in a town of 30 people in Australia, playing Hip by the campfire trying to explain to people what you mean to us as Canadians.

Seeing the Hip live is more comforting then seeing your team score a goal or drinking a double double. Nothing beats looking over to see Sinclair bobbing his head like a turtle, Baker shaking his long hair, and Gord breaking microphones and dancing like a maniac.

So on behalf of ALL music fans and music loves, we thank you. You make life better and we are proud to call you our home and native band.

I have to agree. I just wish that they would return to Newfoundland more often.

I might as well pile on...

The show this Saturday will be an emotional one for me. I met my wife back in 2002. Our first concert together was OLP downtown in Buffalo. Shortly after we saw The Hip New Year's Eve at Copps and it the rest was history. The music became the soundtrack of our relationship. A few years later Norine was diagnosed with breast cancer. A crushing blow but a battle that she won after surgeries, therapies, etc. etc..

We saw the Hip 8 times during the World Container tour as Norine's (our) life was coming back together. We were in the front row in Cleveland when Gordon D. gave her a microphone. We were on top of the world that night after all that had gone on a short time back. We married, bought a house and were barely moved in when the second diagnosis came down out of the blue. Within a few weeks she was paralyzed. Hospice gave us three months together. Somehow she mustered up enough strength to get in a wheel chair, strap into a rented wheel chair van and go with me on a date to the 6/4 Lewiston show for our anniversary. The venue switched our seats to the last row (for wheelchair access). We sang and cried to each other the whole time. A few weeks later she passed away in my arms.

This is my first Hip show without her. In the town where it all started. Heavy duty stuff.....

I will be in row BB in front of Paul with a courage t-shirt on. I can't thank the band enough for the memories they have provided over the years. Life has been very difficult to say the least. I have been just trying to stay busy and even traveled out of town the last few weekends to catch another fav of mine and his band:

Both shows were incredible. A great warm up for this weekend. A music lover is a music lover...I am still doing the things that we loved to do (travel and see shows) however now I go alone. The 10/3 has been on the radar screen for a long time.

Needless to say I am pumped and ready for this show. See you there!
