The Wheat Kings? - SoylentGreg - 04-26-2009

So, apparently there's a Tragically Hip cover band called "The Wheat Kings" who play in Richmond, VA. I'm planning to head out to Short Pump thursday to see 'em - are they any good? Do any of the members post here - I thought I was the only Virginian besides Gentoo. Thoughts?

One of my mates Carl enjoyed their show so much that he still has the tickets stub. He's always telling a story or two from that evening & this show was over 10 years ago. I hope this information clears up any question you may have had...

The Wheat Kings were fucking awesome. Because I am a gigantic nerd, here was the setlist:

New Orleans Is Sinking/Nautical Disaster (medley)

Everything sounded fucking awesome, with the possible exception of Grace, Too which started off a little shaky. Didn't do much ranting, but the lead singer jumped around and acted Gord-y a lot. Really shocked a cover band would play Unplucked Gems. They did a jam at the end of NOIS that led into Nautical, it was really cool. Not many Hipfans in attendance, but the crowd was good even if they only sang along on one song (Courage.) A+ tribute band, can't believe they're right here in Richmond! Oh, and I got to talk to their lead singer a little bit after, he's a pretty cool guy and a total Hip nerd.

In anticipation for the 9:30 Club Show in DC on Monday, October 19. The Pour House in Richmond, VA has scheduled: An Evening with The Wheat Kings - Friday, October 16, 2009. They plan to even have a song from WATS. Free show!

Im sorry to announce the Wheat Kings show has been cancelled for tomorrow at The Pour House because the bass player actually shot an arrow through his hand on Monday. Not lying - I think he's going to be OK though. Maybe the Hip will play an extra set in DC to make up for it. Sorry about that...

It's okay, I couldn't get off work tonight anyway. Already asked for Monday off to drive to DC and see the Hip!
