The Tragically Hip
The Tragically Hip proved that one thing is definitely the same -- they are still pretty darn popular in Canada.
The Kingston, Ontario rockers' 12th studio effort, "We Are the Same," shot to the top of the album charts this week, selling just under 27,000 copies, according to figures compiled by Nielsen SoundScan.
That falls in line with first week sales of their last record -- "World Container" rung up sales of just over 27,000 back in October of 2006.
French artist Pierre LaPointe's "Sentiments Humains" was close behind at No. 2, selling 26,000, while "Star Academie 2009" (20,000) dropped out of No. 1 down to No. 3.
Diana Krall's "Quiet Nights" slipped from No. 3 to No. 4, the "Hannah Montana: The Movie" soundtrack stayed put at No. 5, and Ginette Reno's "Fais-Moi De La Tendresse" sank four notches to No. 6.
Rascal Flatts' new effort "Unstoppable" premiered at No. 7, and Metric's "Fantasies" moved from No. 13 to No. 8.
Rounding out the top 10 was Keith Urban's "Defying Gravity" at No. 9, and Johnny Reid's "Dance With Me" at No. 10.
In the U.S., Rascal Flatts landed in first, followed by "Hannah Montana" in second, Jadakiss's "Last Kiss" in third, Jason Aldean's "Wide Open" in fourth, and "NOW 30" in fifth.

Just curious, but does anyone know the highest ranking album and the position it attained on the US charts?

Up To Here - 170 (charted for 6 weeks)
TATH - 134 (charted for 1 week)
Phanton Power - 143 (charted for 1 week)
M@W - 139 (charted for 1 week)
IVL - 169 (charted for 1 week)
WATS - 148

It was certified Platinum (100,000 units) in Canada in October 2006.

Lol, that's sweet. How successful are they in the UK, are they one of those bands that most people have heard of or are they only known if you've a penchant to music snobbery.

I would say they have seen more success in Europe than in the States but that is just a guess....

I think the opposite actually.
It seems every review I read about Europe it states that the venue is brimming with Canadians and ex-Canucks.
Here in the States I would venture that the majority of a crowd is US.
I guess our friends from over the water may be able to enlighten us more.

We Are The Same sold 27,000 copies Canada-wide, while Pierre LaPointe's - Sentiments Humains sold 26,000 copies in Quebec & parts of New Brunswick... lol
Good thing the French listeners were split between buying Sentiments Humains or Star Academie 2009 or we may not have clinched #1 at all lol.

What's worse is that Nickelback, probably the worst Canadian export ever, is at #13.
WATS is still at #148.
Have I mentioned how much I hate pop music?
