Tragically Hip + Drugs?? -

I know alot of there songs symbolize recreational drugs, such as the pot leaves in the fish tank at the beggining of Poets. Any non hip fan seeing Downie live for a first time would assume he is on drugs, and Im just wondering if anyone knows or has any theories about the Hips stance on Drugs/Alchohal??
Ive always wonderd, thanks

Good quesiton. I'm pretty sure they're not vocal supporters of drugs.
However, their stance is pretty much confirmed by things like how on the IBE tour, as they came back for encores, you could see their enlarged shadows passing a joint to each other on the big on-stage screen.

You could tell, by their shadows, that they were passing a joint to one another? There's no chance it was anything else. Not even a good ol' smoke???

:nooooo What was I thinking. Of course it was a smoke.
But seriously, they did it in Calgary and in Winnipeg. I'm pretty sure they did it on most of the tour stops, as some sort of a "statement."

And don't forget they do sell their own personalized cigarette rolling papers.

The Hip Club ---> THC
Coincidence?
That's all I got. I really don't care one way or another...

Gord, I have to assume has made a trip or two to nature and ate a whole bunch of shrooms.

When we took our bus trip to Long Island in '98, one of the girls on our bus got to go backstage after the show, and smoked a joint with the band....(according to her, but she seemed believable?)

i always remember hearing a story from the 90's about the hip playing a show somewhere, maybe the intimate and interactive at much. i just forget but anyways the person relaying the story (radio personality i believe) was saying how the "green room" took on a whole new meaning when the boys were in there.

Yeah, I'm not big on drugs myself, so I've had to resign to the idea that the hip are (were) probably large pot heads. No big deal anyways.
that said, I think they were probably more stoned in their youth than they are now a days.

It's not exactly a secret that the band loves weed. It's also not a secret that Gord used to love LSD back in the day and maybe he still does but I highly doubt it. There is a fairly recent video where it looks like one of the guys is snorting cocaine, but I'm not gonna mention who and what video. All I'll say is that's what it looked like to me, but I could be wrong about it. I'm sure that nobody else will agree or acknowledge this, but I don't really care. As long as the guys are great dads who are taking care of their families, that's all that really matters.

Yeah, the entirety of Day for Night/Trouble at the Henhouse implies a band who does lots of drugs. They've probably mellowed out a lot in the last few years, though. Still, they sell their own rolling papers and their fan club's initials is THC, come on.

Just listen to "Sherpa". Also, the one time I talked to Gord D., we briefly talked about weed and the way he was talking about it... I have no doubt.

At the beginning of Putting Down during one of the SOTD's Gord introduced it with the statement "this song is about quitting dope". I always just kind of assumed Gord D. used to do something harder than weed, probably cocaine, but that's just speculation. I've also always assumed that the band has probably lessened their drug use as they've aged. Either way, it's never interfered with their career.

Kind of an interesting thread. I have had friends who have seen the band on a few occations and have asked "what the hell is that dude on"? Honestly, I don't think it is much more than the occational doobie. Maybe (like many people have said) during the mid nineties the guys might have dabbled in something stronger but to maintain the work schedule and resposiblities that the Hip have I think it would be reflected in different ways...ie...cancelled shows, poor health, poor records, loss of fan and industry people, band going broke...etc.
Several bands that I like (just my taste I guess) have hit rock bottom because of drugs, they end up losing everything eventually (lable, fans, credibility).
Another take on it is, the Hip play different songs/shows nearly every concert. Yes, downie misses a few lyrics here and there but by and large he rants, dances, screams, mimes and nearly never misses a beat. You can't be trashed on drugs and entertain at that level for two decades.... no way.
