Hockey Night In.... - grooveless touque - 09-22-2003

Well, we're into exhibition season and so far the Senators are 2-0-0-0 with something to prove - a double-header against the Leafs coming up next weekend! I thought it'd be fun to have an ongoing Hockey thread to keep up with during the year - favourite teams, hockey news, etc. I just heard Saku Koivu is already out for 3 to 4 weeks with an injury...how bad is this for the Habs??? They really need a good season this year after last year's incredibly disappointing one. Theodore needs to wake up, and the core players have toget back on track. I might be a Sens fan but there's something about a failing Habs team that just seems like a shame!

By the way - does anyone know where to get good live updates on hockey scores? I used to go to faceoff.com where it was upated every time play stopped, but then canada.com took it over and now they only update once or twice a period. CBC's is a LITTLE better, but still not fast enough!! Where's the best place to get live updates?

Ahh...tonight, goalie sensation Marc-Andre Fleury (who played in NS these past couple years) returned to Halifax in his 2nd professional game tod efeat the Bruins! GO FLEURY!! Pittsburghbadly needs salvaging, and if he can make the difference, I'll cheer for them all season long.

Man...I was so looking forward to seeing the Sens finish with a perfect record!! I know the pre-season doesn't matter, but after their rally last year to get to the final game of the Eastern Conference Final, winning their first 8 games this year was a pretty big thrill. Damn Montreal!! They're now 8-0-1-0, with the final game of the pre-season tonight. Damn New York too...only 7 pre-season games, and they won them all Sad

By the way...everybody take Dany Heatley out of your virtual hockey rankings, because I heard he might not be in for the entire year. His injuries are worse than first suspected!!

i took him out of my list,
i heard that they are soon gonna charge heatley with some sort of vehicular homicide charge.

Preseason means jack. It's just games to check out prospects, make cuts, and get guys back into game shape. I wouldn't take exhibition stats too seriously. Montreal had a great preseason last year and we all know what happened to them Sad

Stupid Heatley, he may have ruined his career besides of course that he ended the life and career of someone else. 1st degree vehicular homicide comes with a 3 to 15 years sentence. Doubt he'll get that though.

I know pre-seaosn stats mean nothing. For one thing, much of the time, all the best players aren't on the ice in the same game. For one game - which they lost - the Leafs left out virtually every player I could name! Still, pre-season gets me lusting for the home openers, so I get excited even though the stats are meaningless!

I doubt Heatley will ever get the max for his charges, but I seriously think he's going to go to prison. I mean, 140 kmh on a two lane residential road is just insane, and a man died, so even if alcohol wasn't a factor...I think he's going up on vahicular manslaughter and will end up with a few years in jail. What a terrible shame, especially for the families but also for the Thrashers and hockey fans in general who were looking forward to great things from Heatley.

Check this out...I had noticed this, but the stats surprise even me. Unbelievable...and just when I thought Marian Hossa might break out and have a 60-goal season! Confusedhock:

(CP) - If the early trend continues, NHL goal scorers will have their worst season in history.

Only 4.7 goals a game were scored, on average, in the 87 games played through the first two weeks of the new season. The average was 5.7 after the same number of games one year ago, and keep this in mind: it went down from there - to 5.3 by season's end. The league continues its crackdown on obstruction fouls, and it recently reduced the size of goaltenders' leg pads, but neither has fuelled offences.

There were 20 shutouts in the 87 games compared to six through the same number of games a year ago. There were two scoreless games on the same night for the first time in 69 years. Granted, it doesn't take a lot of goals to make a game entertaining. Some of the best this season have been low-scoring contests. We're merely pointing out a trend. Maybe the trend will reverse itself next week. A suggestion: don't hold your breath.

A season has never ended with fewer than five goals a game being scored on average. The lowest average, 5.2, was recorded in 2001-2002. A decline started after the 5.8 average of 1996-97. It was 5.3 for the next two years and 5.5 in each of the following two years. It was 6.3 in 1995-96, 7.3 in 1986-87 and a staggering 8.3 in 1981-82, when Wayne Gretzky scored 92 goals. Tell youngsters about that and you'll be accused of fibbing.

Who's to blame for the shortage of goals? Coaches can be fingered. A lot of them have their players applying trapping defences to thwart opponents' attacks. It's the surest way to be competitive night after night. It can produce boring hockey but in the struggle of trying to make the playoffs, points are pertinent and pretty is panned.Goaltenders are guilty, too.

The quality of goaltending is so high that, of masked bandits who had appeared in a minimum four games, 21 had save percentages in excess of .900 as of the completion of games played Wednesday night. Rick DiPietro of the Islanders had allowed only three goals on 68 shots before Thursday's game versus Montreal. That's a .956 save percentage through four games. Roberto Luongo of the Florida Panthers was at .955 after stopping 231 of 242 shots in seven games.

Nikolai Khabibulin of the Tampa Bay Lightning was at .950, Andrew Raycroft of the Boston Bruins was at .948 and Sean Burke of the Phoenix Coyotes and Patrick Lalime of the Ottawa Senators each were at .942. Jeff Hackett of the Philadelphia Flyers already had two shutouts. At this rate, arena maintenance crews won't have to replace many red light bulbs this winter.
