My Wife is Graduating University soon - WesleyC. - 12-29-2008

I have a problem here. My wife has been getting her B.A. in Psycology at the University of Waterloo. Thru distance education.
She has been at it for 4 years now all on her own. No class advantage. Just all on her own in our dining room. She is averaging in the 80% range. she has only 4 coarses left to go.
I want to do something real special for her, as she has been the cornerstone of our family. ( our 2 kids and myself)
Without her we would be totally lost.
She is an amazing person and Does not want for anything.
My problem is that she is the first person in her or my families to graduate from University. (both of us grew up in alcholic families) so education is not really something that was put forth as important. Yet she did it all herself.
I have no fucking clue what to do to make it special and tell her how much I admire her. So IM ASKING FOR SUGGESTIONS.
SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE APPRECIATED. Thanks.
I know this has nothing to do with Hipbase but im asking everybody and everyplace I know.

It may not be the ultimate thing that you could do - but one thing I know my wife LOVED was that I had her diploma framed so she could hang it proudly.

Like Dana said, frame her degree and put it in a place of pride in the house.

Plan a surprise party - invite everyone and make a speech letting her, and everyone else in attendance know how proud you are of her.

Why did she get a degree in Psychology? What is her plan once she has the degree? Using that info plan something relevant.

Start small man. Cook her dinner, with all the trimmings. Cook everything she loves. (And like tdc said, get someone to take care of the kids)

After that, tell her whenever you can how proud you are of her man. It's a great thing she's done and often just reminding someone of their accomplishments is all they "want."

Hope that doesn't sound hokey.

Howdy Wesley, Your absolutely right about the size of your wife's accomplishment and it's cool to see your so proud of her.

Because she attended an "Open University" will her diploma be awarded in absentia? If so, I will recommend that you organize some form of graduation ceremony. You could arrange a gathering of friends and family to honor her accomplishment in a formula ritual. You could involve the kids to help impress the importance of education. Make a big deal of it. Play Pomp and Circumstance, traditional gown and cap, a Key note speaker and a formal presentation of the diploma. Get the classic photo of Mom in her gown with the kids at her side. Ohhh yeah, and a graduation ring. Nothing says important ritual like a ring.

Aside from the graduation ring, which is done more on the high school level, I'd say NegPhil has the right idea. I finished up my degree via distance education and the thing that I missed out on was the graduation ceremony. I'd start with that and segue into a getaway weekend with the wife.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Yes she is going to the Graduation Ceremony at the University of Waterloo.
I will be having a get together with our friends.
I am getting her the school ring.
We just got back from Cuba. ( sunny destination ) idea is good but we do it every January.
Making her a dinner , hmmmm I do that already 4 nights a week. I am a great cook and cook up big dinners ie. roast, lasagana, pork, veggies, all that stuff already so another dinner wont mean so much really.
We go out on a date night once a week to movies, play pool, darts bowling, anything that were interested in actually. So an evening out is not anything new either.
That is why I was asking for suggestions, not to seem to picky but we already do it all and Im looking for that over the top suggestion that is so normal and in front of me that I dont even see it.

Hmmmmmmm SURPRISE party. Surprise being the operative word here.
