Gord Downie Halifax show! - highlander - 09-13-2003

3:15am Just getting in from the marquee after waiting for Gord to come out. The show was awesome! 2 encores! Im too beat to say much more. Gord was in fine form and the CoM was awesome! I took 2 rolls of pictures. Neil (Lightonthewater) had his digital cam and Rory took some also.

My first time meeting Gord. He was very approachable and had a short chat with him. He signed my CMG Poetry book "Darren's orange number. Enjoy - Gord Downie"

Was great to meet all the fellow Hipbasers before the show and at the show. Jamie, Lance and Lynnette, Rory and his fiance, Neil and Darren (another one).

Quotes heard while waiting and talking to Gord:

"I just smoked a joint with Gord Downie"
"What colour is yours (pen)?" Pam: "Green" Gord: "Cooool"

Laters!

Wow your so lucky! I WISH that I had of waited to meet Gord after the Lee's show! I will wait for sure next time. (if there is one) Cry
Was Gord wearing his white shirt, and jeans?

Can't wait to read more about it! :thumb:

He was wearing a plain white T shirt, his yellow Bruins hat, blue jeans with New Balance sneakers.

Hell of a show, wasn't it...I hope my pics turned out alright, because I'd never used a digital camera before. The screen's too small to tell if some of the pics were blurred, but the after-show meeting photos came out perfectly, I believe. Lance's is probably the best "candid" shot I've ever seen. Lucky bastard

Gord opened with a Johnny Cash number, as we were hoping he would (The Man Comes Around) and even did it in a Casheqsue monotone. Considering how fast they must have learned it (I don't know if they'd played it before), they did a pretty good job. The second to last song of the night was Neil Young's When You Dance. I was blown away! It was awesome, and sounded so much more natural than any other cover I've ever heard him do. He also did Dylan's Going Going Gone, which wasn't bad but I never liked that song anyway. I wish he was still doing If You Gotta Go, Go Now!

It was great to meet all you guys, and thanks to Darren for the lift (if what I've heard is true, it was a matter of life and death!)

Met with Gord for a few seconds afterwards and got him to sign my BOTN liner. Told him that I'd seen him in Ottawa and this show was better from the front row! He was so fantastically high/stoned that he didn't even write real English when he signed it. I still have no idea what that says. He seemed incredibly sheepish and kind of his beneath the brim of his hat, hardly looking anyone in the eye when they were speaking to him. It was a little weird, but hey - I got to meet him!

Cheers, all!

Neil! where's those pictures!? hehe

I take credit for Lance's shot with Gord but it was with your camera Wink

I got my films done this morning (I was up at 8am) and they came out great! Looking through them now to see which ones might be worth scanning/enlarging.

Hey Guys, just waking up now (11:30am). Hell of a show last night. Can't get Insomniacs out of my mind. When you Dance was phenominal as well. Too bad we didn't ask that girl in front of us for her email so we could get a copy of her video. I guess we are just FAKE FANS!!, lol!

It was awesome to put some names to faces, Highlander and his wife, Lance, Lynette, and lightonthewater too. Thanks to Rory and Brandy for getting me a ticket to the show. They are true hospitable fans.

Well Rory, Brandy and I are off to Peggy's Cove today to check it out. I'm going to count how many times I see the lady in the red plaid shirt asking for changes and update you later on tonight, lol!!!! We'll be heading to the lower deck this evening for some live music and eats so if any Halifaxers wanna join us, we'll be there.

Take care everyone and we'll be talking soon. Lance, don't forget the new poll to be added to hipbase.com, lol

"he didn't even write real English when he signed it."
Lightonthewater:

Check to see if you can make out the word "power" or something... he seems to be signing that a lot lately. Confusedcratch: The first time I met him when I waited for him after Lee's he scribbled some nonsensical thing on my ticket.... and I figured it out because when he signed my BOTN after ther Much I&I, he wrote power again and I realised that is what he wrote the first time! Tongue

If not... keep trying... lol Big Grin

Good Morning Everyone, What a show, what a crowd and a great group of people.

Fianlly got to meet Gord, the poor guy was a mess. He looked like Mr. Burns when he came out. I am still not sure what he wrote on my CD cover? Thank you again Lightonthewater for the picture, I hope it turns out.

It was great meeting Highlander and his wife, Jamie, Neil, Rory and his new Fiance Brandy.

Can't wait to see your pictures Darren! Hope they turned out well. And I hope the recording turned out good.

Does anyone remember what Gord said about Joesphine? I guess I am just a Fake Fan!!! haha, Love That!

- highlander - 09-13-2003

I asked Jamie what Gord told him about Josephine. She is a mystical/fictional person. He said he didn't want to reveal anything about her right now.

Well, tonight is the last show of the tour...the list at the wienerart site used to say, "to be continued", but it doesn't any more. I wonder if this is it for awhile? Cry
How was the crowd? Was it a packed house? I don't know anything at all about the Marquee. How many people does it hold? Was it sold out?
Was Dale wearing his Johnny Cash t-shirt (the one where he's flipping the bird)? Am I asking too many questions?
Sounds like another awesome show- wish I could have been there!!

- highlander - 09-13-2003

It was sold out. 600 upstairs capacity I think at the Marquee. Crowd was good, couple of surfers who were quickly escorted out by security.

Dale was wearnig his Johnny Cash black T-shirt.

Im still absorbing it and reflecting on it.

Great show!! Anyone else picking glass out of their shoes??? I would've loved to have stuck around to meet the band but ended up safely tucked away in bed by that time.. and sporting a vicious headache earlier today. Were there many people waiting afterwards?

- highlander - 09-13-2003

Yes I was quite pissed off when I turned around after the show and saw the smashed bottles all over the floor. We're not talking 1 or 2 bottles, Im talking 20-25 bottles. It was the only bad part of the evening for me anyways. Disgusting that people feel they have to do that.

There were a number of people out waiting at first then the numbers slowly dwindled. It was about 2 hours (i think) before Gord came out, so it was basically just us Hipbasers left, but when Gord came out lots of people who were in the vicinity came over.

- grooveless touque - 09-13-2003

25 bottles?! You must not have taken a close look! lol...It's fair to say there were probably more than a hundred bottles both dropped intact and dropped smashed. It was everywhere, there was so much residual beer on the floor that it was like walking on polished wood - slip and slide!!

I couldn't believe how strange Gord was whe he came out. Most of the "I met Gord" stories have him lucid and sober. I didn't expect him to be a shambles and harly able to speak a coherent sentence. Still a great experience though.

I'm uploading the photos now, will e-mail you guys soon.
