seeing how mac is the competition, i would say yes?

Re: New Microsoft Ads - longseason - 09-15-2008

The newest pieces are pretty damn funny. The first one (used to set up the premise) set at Shoe Circus or whatever it was, was wanting. The 'Get a Mac' ads were funny — about two years ago. I think Jobs, et al need to kill that campaign.

Re: New Microsoft Ads - skippy the wonder dog - 09-15-2008

The Mac ad campaign works now only because Vista is so bad. As it stands, Vista itself is an ad for Apple, which is actually pretty funny.

Microsoft can do all the advertising they want, but they're shining a turd right now.

Re: New Microsoft Ads - longseason - 09-15-2008

Vista was bad. However, now I think it's accepted that it's actually a fairly good OS. Everything was so screwed up at launch time that the Vista brand was irreperably damaged. That being said, I don't run Vista — so this is all gleaned from what I've read from people online. As Windows 7 is going to drop — next year, I heard today — Microsoft is doing their best to put a shine on the turd, to use the parlance of our times.

That being said, I bought my second Apple product — an iPhone! It hasn't been the greatest experience as far as stability goes, but boy does it look pretty. They're sucking me in! I'll ahve a MacBook sometime soon!

Re: New Microsoft Ads - skippy the wonder dog - 09-15-2008

That may be true, but it's not accepted among the people I talk to every day at work ... IT directors at various companies.... Among that group, Vista seems to be universally regarded as poison.

What part of that is experience, and what part reputation, I can't say.

XP and NT were MS's first really good OS since, well, DOS ... then with Vista they threw all their gains in the trash. That being said, though, a lot of Apple's momentum has little to do with their computers and a lot to do with the image they've built around the iPod.

The Globe and this article on it when the first one premiered a few weeks back. Personally they don't do much for me. I think the Mac ads are still far more effective.

NEW YORK — No soup for Microsoft?

The software giant's new ad starring Jerry Seinfeld has draw largely negative reviews online after premiering Thursday night during NBC's broadcast of the National Football League's season kickoff game.

The ad was the start of a highly anticipated $300-million (U.S.) advertising campaign that Microsoft is launching in attempt to rebuff Apple's popular TV commercials, which have portrayed Microsoft and PCs as uncool.

In the commercial – which can be found at Microsoft.com and on video sharing sites – Mr. Seinfeld is walking through a mall when he spots Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates at a Shoe Circus store. The comedian then helps Mr. Gates pick out a new pair of shoes while the jokes come quick: showering with clothes on, Gates being a “10,” platinum credit cards for a fictional shoe store.

It's a zany ad that packs a lot of quirkiness into 90 seconds. With no direct mention of Microsoft or its operating system, Vista, the commercial concludes with the slogan: “The future, delicious.”

The ad was created by Crispin Porter & Bogusky – a firm with a reputation for oddness. Many technology and advertising blogs have turned to Seinfeld's trademark comedy description – “nothing” – to describe the ad.

“Huh?” wrote Abbey Klaassen for Ad Age. “You could be forgiven for not knowing what the heck Microsoft's new TV ad … was about.”

Dan Frommer, writing for the Silicon Alley Insider, pronounced the ad “not funny” and added that the mall shoe store setting “is not going to help Microsoft look any cooler.”

For the blog Techcrunch.com, Michael Arrington noted that the “tech and geek crowd is a little underwhelmed” by the ad, which he said is “a far cry from the brilliant Microsoft v. Mac ads.”

Brad Brooks, vice president of Windows consumer product marketing, said in a video posted on the Windows press web site, that the ad is a “teaser” meant to “engage customers in a conversation … to get the conversation going again about what Windows means in people's everyday lives.”

Even if the reaction was mostly negative, Microsoft's ad has clearly succeeded in getting people talking.

Jerry Seinfeld And Bill Gates' Microsoft Ads Being Pulled
LA Times September 18, 2008

Microsoft is preparing to pull its TV ads featuring comedian Jerry Seinfeld and Microsoft's co-founder and chairman Bill Gates.

Microsoft spokesman Frank Shaw said the end of the Seinfeld ads was planned well in advance, and wasn't coming in response to any criticism of the spots. "All along we said we were having a teaser campaign," he said. "We're getting ready to start the second phase. This was the plan all along."

The news, broken this afternoon by Valleywag, comes just days after Microsoft aired the latest in the series of commercials, produced by Crispin Porter + Bogusky, featuring the two men in comic situations. The ads have been largely panned as a strained effort on the software giant's part to not only promote Windows but also portray Microsoft as cool and in touch with regular consumers -- basically, to counter the stodgy image painted in Apple's "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" ads.

Seinfeld, who reportedly received $10 million for his efforts, was a superstar in the 1990s with his hit show. Using him now, in 2008, only added to Microsoft's image as being behind the times, critics said.

Have you seen the new, new Microsoft ad?

And then there's this viral hit from Microsoft CEO Steve "Monkey Boy" Ballmer:

And just for some comedic relief - more of Steve:

But don't feel bad for him, he's worth $15 Billion....

Re: New Microsoft Ads - kyleargyle - 09-24-2008

I dunno...I kind of liked those ads. They were bizarre to be sure, but they had a quirkiness to them that I liked.

Re: New Microsoft Ads - The Horrible Esthete - 09-24-2008

I found the Gates / Seinfeld Microsoft ads to be incredibly UNfunny. Embarrassingly unfunny.

Re: New Microsoft Ads - Jenna_Bird - 09-24-2008

Y'know, they pulled them after only airing two of the six taped commercials. I read an article about it...somewhere. The reasoning was that casting Jerry Seinfeld, whose pinnacle of fame was reached over a decade ago, made the company appear even more outdated, not to mention, humorless.

Re: New Microsoft Ads - tigerthelion - 09-24-2008

The Mac ads with Justin Long are horrid, even worse than the relatively unfunny Gates/Seinfeld commercials. I don't care how funny/unfunny the commercials are though. I also don't care how cool/uncool I'm perceived to be for having a Mac or PC. I just want something that works for everything I need it for. So far, a PC does every single thing I want a computer to do. If that makes me uncool, so be it. :rambo:
