Anybody see the new movie yet? The reviews have been harsh, but I saw it on Friday night and it's not as bad as everybody says it is. I thought it was an adequate thriller, but the story just wasn't weird or scary enough to be an X-File. It was actually much more like an episode of Chris Carter's other series, Millennium. A serial killer/C.S.I. type of story with no real paranormal aspect, other than that the man leading the FBI to all the clues has a psychic connection to the victims. That being said, it was still fun to re-visit Mulder & Scully. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson were both terrific in the roles that made them famous, and they deserved a much better story. Carter really dropped the ball with this one. The movie was a huge flop this weekend, finishing 4th behind Mama Mia. If they actually end up doing a 3rd X-Files flick, it'll have to be straight-to-DVD I'm afraid. There's no way Fox will greenlight another one of these, which is too bad. It would've been cool to see this movie become a hit and revive the franchise.

I feel this movie was marketed horribly. The trailers were awful. Its as if they were trying to make the movie seem like it was some spectacular hollywood blockbuster, but they didn't have any footage to show us. I think people ended up in the theatres with a different idea of what was coming, but had they marketed it for what it was, there wouldn't have been any confusion. I can totally see why people are giving it negative criticism and why it will be overlooked.

I think it was a good film. However many years it is now since the series ended, its tough to go back to the original dynamic, and they didn't (mostly). It was nice to see some of the original themes crop up and some great character moments also.

Like you said, direwolf, its too bad that this isn't going to open any doors for future films.

Oh, and my biggest complaint: Not enough Skinner! The theatre I was in on Friday was packed and there were loud cheers when Skinner made his cameo. I realize this was primarily a Mulder and Scully movie, but it would've been cool if they had written a bigger role for the Skin Man. Anyways, like I said, I did enjoy the movie for what it was and I thought it had some cool moments. But you're right about the trailer. I initially got the impression that this was going to be a flat-out horror film that would scare the pants off you, but that's not what it turned out to be at all. I guess my expectations were too high.
