Euro 2008 - The Heron Outside - 06-03-2008

Just a few more days and the second biggest international footie tourney kicks off...I'm quite excited, as Turkey plays the first evening game. No doubt the streets of Istanbul will be riotous if they pull off an upset over Portugal.

Who's everyone's pick? Naturally, Group C is the strongest, but whoever makes it out of that group alive might be a bit tired by the time they hit the quarter-finals.

Germany's my bet to raise the cup amongst the favourites. Look for Podolski to have a righteous tournament.

As far as darkhorses, I like the looks of Romania, Russia or Turkey. As Greece proved 4 years ago though, could go any way. Should be good.

I think the Oranje are overdue for a successful tournament. Watch for them to go pretty far - maybe not to win it - but semis maybe.

I don't know how the final games line up this year, but I'd like to see Germany vs. Holland near the final.

I dont see that happening, a couple of injuries and an average defence corps will set them back, not to mention playing in the same group with Italy, France and Romania..Id say it would be a stretch for them to make the quarters. They have lots of firepower up front and a good midfield they could go far, but I just dont see it, not with that group.

I see Italy, France, Portugal or Germany winning the Euro, if not, at least one or two of those teams will be in the finals for sure. If I had to pick just one right now it would be France. Spain has a potent lineup as well but they always seem to underachieve in the big tournaments for some reason, but they could be dangerous and also I wouldnt mind if an outside team like Croatia or Austria pulled a "Greece" and won it all or at least made the final. I really enjoy the Euro maybe more than the world cup, the teams are all very good and its very competitive, and the fans make it awesome.

While the Euro Cup doesn't have the international flair that the World Cup does, it can certainly be more competitive most of the time.

As far as the hosts go, I wouldn't be surprised if they score only 3 goals between them. Bit of a far-flung choice as hosts, but we can rest assured that with their efficient transit systems, all the hooligans will get to the games on time.

Anyone up for a simple pool to make things interesting?

I was just tossing out names really, Austria doesnt have a hope in hell of winning in this tournament. Croatia could upset some teams and do some damage in this tourney they wont be pushovers.

OK I was never good at those type of math 'story' problems in school. But my answer is:
Neterhlands will score 7 goals and you make 10 dollars? Well, unless someone uses US currency then I have to start over. Confused

i'm cheering for cro, but they'll be hard pressed to replace da silva, who has been a scoring machine for them.

Are these games televised on Setanta Sports in U.S.?

It is an additional 15.00 a month for that channel,
I usually order and get it in the late summer for Rugby.

that was some performance by the Dutch, they really came to play today. i cant remember seeing Italy play so poorly before. although the first goal shouldnt not have counted, they really took the game to them. i guess i might have to eat my words, but its only one game. but the way france played today im not sure what to think of that group, the Netherlands just might run away with it..

good on them anyways, like you said they are long overdue for a good showing in a big tournament.

Nice start by the Dutch!

I will hold my tongue on the first goal. I haven't seen it yet, as I PVR'd the game, but I heard from a co-worker that an Italian player was down by the goal, but hadn't left the field yet, so that makes Nistelrooy's goal onside. I'll watch it later on and make my own opinion.

Les Bleus better watch out on Friday - the Oranje will be out to clinch.

I hadnt heard about the downed Italian player Ill have to go back and look..otherwise he was offside by a mile, I dont know how they could have missed it if thats not the case.

I think based on yesterday the Dutch will clinch against France, unless Les Bleus can wake up and start playing.
