I've seen this before Esthete, but I gotta say, the reason why gas prices are so high in the States is coz they havent friggin built a new oil refinery in 30 years!!! $#%#%&^% enviromental impact statements and NIMBYism!! :nooooo :nooooo :rambo:

The Oil companies have not built new refineries in order to control the supply. The Oil companies themselves and Oil speculators are the cause of high gas prices not "regulation" or tree huggers.
"Congress is demanding explanations from oil company executives who are making millions as their companies make billions. This week in an attempt to bring down prices, President Bush signed a new law that would halt oil from being added to the nation`s strategic oil reserves. But the president of the North Dakota Petroleum Marketers Association says 55-60% of the oil price crisis is the result of speculators like a New York man who just made a bundle of cash at your expense.
NDPMA President Mike Rud explains, "He took possession of the oil on paper four years ago and sold it here a couple of weeks ago, and it was a $307 million profit."
Rud says Congress needs to take action soon to stop the rampant oil speculation.
"We need to force these traders to take possession of at least 25-50% of this commodity,"

OK, assuming that we are talking the US gallon, which is 3.785 litres, I am currently paying $9.50 Canadian for one...
It's £1.28 a litre here, highest in Europe I think...
We're screwed.

It is fucking stupid that Canadians are paying so much for gas. We have the oil in the country!!!
It's because we're selling it off. For those who don't know Jasper National Park now has a pipeline running through it so we can get oil to the coast more efficiently, and sell it overseas. A pipeline in a NATIONAL PARK!!!
We need to go back to what Trudeau wanted to do back in the '80's. Tell the other countries, "Nothing personal, but we need our oil". That way we keep it, have it at a fair price, and it's about looking out for one another... not about the $$$.
Frustrating thing is, the pig-headed tories are saying they're not stepping in to stop this ridiculous increase. Unbelievable.

With regards to TTH_Fan's ideas, I find it highly ironic that a western canadian would advocate the economic shafting of his own province.

I'm also guessing that he's too young to know that the implications in Alberta of Trudeau's National Energy Program resulted were thousands of people walking away from their homes (as real estate prices dropped 40%), and bankruptcies increased 150%.
I'm from Ontario, so the NEP certainly didn't impact my family like it impacted people who grew up here, but in talking to people who did grow up here, you'd think it happened yesterday (and it certainly explains the long standing contempt that many Albertans feel towards the Liberal party).

Chris, that would make too much sense. Why would we do that when we can just keep using oil until the economy to crashes?
