The Constantines- Kensington Heights - direwolf74 - 04-15-2008

Just picked this up at lunch today. Great record! I wasn't sure if they could top the awesomeness of "Tournament of Hearts", but this album might be the best thing they've done so far. 2008 is turning out to be an amazing year for new music!

I spun this record nearly in it's entirety the other night when I was DJ'ing (In Turkey no less) and had half a dozen folks approach me about them...It's just that good.

"Million Star Hotel" and "Time Can Be Overcome" are my favorites so far. I can't stop listening to this album.

I was supremely unimpressed by the Constantines when they opened up the Oshawa show last tour. They just didn't interest me. Is that what they're all about or are they a better studio band then they are a live band?

I can't comment on their live gig as i've not seen them live, yet, but I remember there was some discussion on the base and some were saying they blew The Hip out of the water, take that for what its worth. Forgot to say, i've heard pretty much all their studio stuff and I think it all sounds great, Kensington Heights their best for sure.

I'm with you on this one... I just didn't enjoy their set at all. But I've heard many good things about this record that it might be worth a second listen.

I said that about the Cons when they opened for Das Hips in NYC, '07. And I stand by it. They owned that night. Night two was a different story, but nevertheless...The Cons have a live set that's a true roller...It won't hook you right away like many other bands, but much like their albums, they're layered and by the end, yer always left wanting more. Great band. I see big things in their future...

For anyone interested in the bonus track, check here. It's a cover of Islands In The Stream, a Bee Gees song made famous by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. Featuring guest vocals from some Feist lady.

I'm with you on this one... I just didn't enjoy their set at all.

I couldn't disagree more. I saw them on a double-bill with the Weakerthans a couple of years ago and I thought they were amazing. I'm looking forward to seeing them at the Virgin Festival in June. I'm betting the new songs will sound magnificent live. That entire show is gonna be incredible: the Hip, Constantines, New Pornographers, and Matthew Good all at the same show. Ya can't go wrong!

I've been listening to this record non-stop since I bought it, and I seem to have a new favorite song every day. "I Will Not Sing a Hateful Song" is my current fave. What a fantastic tune.
