I'm new...and I need your wisdom about the Hip! -
Zaxx - 01-19-2008
I'm a new-ish Hip fan. I know mainly the singles etc. I'm also a radio broadcasting student in Calgary, AB...and I work a local classic rock station on the side.
At school, one of my assignments is a 30 minute music special. And yup, you guessed it...I picked the Hip! I picked the Hip simply because lateley I've wanted to know more a band that will go down as one of the best Canadian rock acts of all time.
I would like the theme of my music special on the Hip to be on the patriotic (Canadian themed) songs the Hip have written/recorded. I need about 4-5 songs. So far I'm looking at tunes like “The Lonely End of the Rink”, “Wheat Kings” and “Fifty-Mission Cap” based on the fact that the lyrics or the stories i've found behind the songs, relate to Canada.
So I'm asking if all you Hip fans can direct me towards other "Canadi-ana" songs the Hip have done. And if possible, the stories, the meanings etc. behind the songs.
Any links to other resources on Tragically Hip info would be great too! (I don't just want to use Wikipedia)
Your help with this project is greatly appreciated!

He's a fan of the hip, just like us.

I'm not sure if this will be a help, but have you thought about playing one or two songs that would be seen as fairly uncommon to radio play?
In my biased opinion, you should listen to Emperor Penguin and consider playing that. The first time I heard it, I wasn't blown away, but since then , it has grown to become my all time favourite Hip song.
It'd be cool to hear that on the radio once in a while

As clearlyentranced said, check out the Hipmuseum. It's an excellent resource.
As for other songs, what about
Three Pistols,
Montreal,
Courage,
Daredevil or
Fireworks... To name but a few (great) songs. :thumb:

The songs on the music special have to be "radio ready"...but not necessarily just their singles. So if emperor penguin is "safe" then I will definitely consider playing it.
Thanks again!

Hey man -
I wrote a few things for a class of mine about Hip songs and how they reflect Different things in Canada?
What's your email? I'll send you my document.

Nautical Disaster is a good one. It doesn't really have a Canadian theme, but if you're looking for the perfect marriage of Gord Downie's poetics and the band's music, look no further.

Was there no possible connection between this song and the Dieppe raid?

The rule at LU Radio was "if you don't swear, you're on the air." It's probably a good idea to keep the asses in the seats, not in high fidelity.
Day For Night to me is the album that has the most "Canada" going for it. Most of the lyrics were refined on the train ride between Toronto and Kingston. The beauty of the trip seeped into the beauty of the record. It's their most powerful work, and the surroundings had a lot to do with that, I believe.
Cheers,
Pat
