I try to play it, and it just keeps skipping ahead to the next song, without actually playing it!
Is my Hard drive dead? Can I buy a replacement from Ebay and make it work again like I did the battery? I can't live without it!

Have you tried reseting it?
Hold down Menu and Select for a couple seconds until the Logo appears.
You may have to do this "Reset" a couple of times because I believe every time you do it, it resets different things.
My brother-in-laws was funky and I had to do it 5 times before it worked - and now it is fine. Although his problem was different.

I did a factory reformat, loaded some more songs, and it sort of worked for one session, and now is back to skipping songs

Mine used to do that every once in a while, and it seemed to happen when I would unplug it from the computer without "ejecting" it. I think the files just get corrupt. I would just delete my library and load it up again. Always worked fine after that.

Well, I have an IPod ? too.
When i plug my IPod into the computer - ITunes does not auto start anymore - even though I have it set that way.
But if I start ITunes manually - it auto sees my IPod and auto syncs.
Why wouldn't my IPod start Itunes?

I had a similar problem. As someone said above, I reformatted my iPod, reloaded it and haven't had a problem since.

I know a new version of the software is available, perhaps make sure you have the newest version and give it another try??

I'll try the new version of Itunes..when I first plugged it in and reformatted, Itunes said that the disk was corrupt, and after reformat, it did work for a few minutes, but was still a little glitchy. I'll try again

Is your iPod connecting through a hub, or direct? Through a hub will often cause the problem that you are experiencing.

Using the most up-to-date iTunes is important, but you also need to ensure that the software on your iPod is the most current.

I connect directly and everything is up to date.
I searched on this issue a couple of times - but it must just be my IPod.
It used to connect fine - but no more.

Same problem here, although more extreme. iTunes doesn't even recognize the unit anymore and it won't charge through USB either, tried everything on their website, reset it dozens of times, different cables, 5 different computers (both PC and mac), and nothing. I even took it into an Apple store and had a "Genius" look at it and they couldn't figure it out, said there is probably something wrong with the connector. I went out and bought one of those wall chargers and go figure, the bastard charges it up. It sucks because I can't change any of the songs on the unit, but at least I can listen to what is on there.

I had that happen to my 4th gen 40Gig awhile back when I was in Australia. I was so pissed cause I was flying back in 2 days and the thought of 20 hours on a plane with no ipod made me very cranky. In a desperate attempt to get it working again with no access to a comp to sync it to I hit it against a brick wall (it was in a hard shell case). Worked like a charm. That was a year and a half ago and it's still going.

Bit the bullet and bought a 30g video. I like the bigger color screen, but now have to reset up all of the playlists and stuff...

You should have to do anything other than plug it in. The playlists are stored on your computer. Unless you did things your own way...

I have too much music on my PC to let it auto sync, so I did it my way...which is usually like the wrong way, but more work

I have more music on my computer than my iPod can store so all I do is tell iTunes to only sync the playlists I select.
