New larger and improved Ottawa bluesfest Hip pictures site! - grooveless touque - 07-31-2002

Selfish plug time...

My Bluesfest pictures website is now much bigger and much better. I've added a couple of dozen shots...more of the bluesmen I know we all love (chuckles), more popular headlining bands, and of course....more Gordon Downie and the Tragically Hip. Trying to figure out why my scanner knackered out just as I was getting near the end...I have a couple more Sarah Harmer pics to upload...maybe I burned it out! lol.

PS: I know how much we all love GeoCities (rolls eyes) and apparently there's a new problem...too many people are copying my pictures (I guess I should be complimented, but I'll be damned if I know all the HTML involved in preventing it) and from time to time the site won't work and an info screen says the site has "exceeded its allotted data transfer" for the hour...try again in less than half an hour, it never takes too long to get back up.

Maybe you could put your name at the bottom right of each of your pictures or put the URL of your website. That might alleviate some problems. Just a suggestion.

First off...

1. If you don't want people to copy your pics and you don't want to learn the HTML tags, just insert your name or 'copyright' logo with your name or initials on the bottom of each picture you scan in (meaning, you could add this information in using a good photo program on your computer). It's really easy to do. But, that doesn't mean people still won't take the images. It's just if they want to make actual PRINT copies of it (which can easily be done with the massive online reprinting websites - like shutterfly, etc), they might think twice about getting a copy of it made when your initial is on it, not to mention the reprinting website (if they are reputable) won't allow a copyright picture to get printed.

2. The reason geocities is saying to check back with the site later because you've exceeded your limit is because too many people are viewing your webpage for the pictures within a day, or even a few hours. I have the same thing on my geocities webpage, but I now pay $5 a month to have extra 'viewing capabilities' by others, so I never get that message anymore.

This might stop a few people from copying your pictures.
Just disable right clicking on your webpage

There are ways around it, but it might turn a few people from stealing.

Thanks for the info...a friend elsewhere already let me know about that, but my pages are constructed using PageBuilder, not HTML. I have TRIED to use HTML - I really have - but everything always ends up screwed up. Once I actually took a Pagebuilt page and converted it to HTML for editing, changed one little thing and suddenly all the pictures were on top of each other on the left hand side of the page.

Suffice it to say I'm terrible at it...but thanks for a direct link to the info should I ever need it and be able to use it!

No problem
You should give Macromedia Dreamweaver or Adobe GoLive a try. They are simular to page builder.

We all started out on geocities.com way back in the day. Smile

Thanks for the recommendations! I have been with Geocities for about five years but until now I never really had an actual need for a website so I never bothered looking elsewhere. Are both of those free web-based programs?[/i]
