It's that time of year again, folks. I'll get it started.
1. Wintersleep- Welcome to the Night Sky
42 minutes of melodic guitar-drenched genius. Multiple eargasms abound. To borrow a quote from a recent review: “complex and noisy as all hell, but tuneful enough to get “Weighty Ghost” on the radio.” By far my favorite record of 2007.
2. The National- Boxer
I only just got into these guys recently, but I was instantly blown away right from the first listen. An absolutely stunning album from start to finish, and one of my favorite new discoveries. “Fake Empire” might be my favorite song of the year. It’s also one of the best lead-off tracks I’ve ever heard.
3. Cuff the Duke- Sidelines of the City
Solidifies their current status as one of my favorite young rock bands on the planet. This is their best album yet, and I hope they have a lot more in them. Wayne Petti has developed into one hell of a songwriter and the band can rock like nobody’s business.
4. Ron Hawkins- Chemical Sounds
Canada’s most underrated songwriter returns with his most accomplished album to date. This is the sound of his years in Lowest of the Low and the Rusty Nails all rolled into one glorious album, filled as usual with his literate & witty lyrics and addictive melodies. Possibly the best record nobody will ever hear. He really needs to get some kind of distribution deal in place. If there’s any album that deserves to be heard by a larger audience, it’s this one.
5. Arcade Fire- Neon Bible
It’s gotta be tough to follow up one of the most universally acclaimed debut albums in rock history, but I think they pulled it off nicely. These guys are one of the coolest bands this country has ever produced, and I think they’ll be around for years to come. I can’t wait to hear what they do next.
6. The Weakerthans- Reunion Tour
Winnipeg’s finest return after 4 long years with another brilliant marriage of poetry and rock. John K. Samson continues to display his unique songwriting talents and proves once again that as a lyricist he’s right up there with the best of the best. Long may they run! But please guys, don’t make us wait another 4 years before we hear from you again.
7. Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band- Magic
Their best album since Darkness on the Edge of Town. Not only do the E Streeters rock out like mad on this disc, it’s also one of Bruce’s finest moments as a writer. Livin’ in the Future, Gypsy Biker, Long Walk Home and Devil’s Arcade are some of the best songs he’s ever penned in my opinion. Not to mention the insanely catchy garage-rock of Radio Nowhere. The Boss is back!
8. Feist- The Reminder
With the exception of maybe Neko Case, I‘d say Ms. Feist has arguably the best pipes in indie rock. Her songs are just so damn beautiful.
9. The White Stripes- Icky Thump
Good old fashioned ass-kickin’ rock n’ roll from the always dependable Jack & Meg. I’ve always liked them, but I wasn’t a huge fan until I saw them up close and personal at their secret Calgary gig at the Cantos Music Museum. They blew my mind.
10. Wilco- Sky Blue Sky
On first listen one could say that this is the sound of Wilco going back to their alt-country roots, but Nels Cline’s jazzy guitar freak-outs add such a different element to the music and helps to create a record completely unique from anything they’ve done before. Jeff Tweedy is still at the top of his game as a songwriter. Great album!

**agreed...though I do believe their finest moments are yet to come, this is a stunning record by a band that is shifting the gears to a whole new level. Should be one of the biggest bands in the country shortly.

**Quite possibly my favourite record of all time, while "Peace and Quiet" is nothing short of a brilliant, brilliant song. This is Hawkins on top of his game. By the way, there's a re-release planned for the new year, with a press blitz, wider distribution and more shows. So hopefully, people will hear this.

Okay here goes my list...
01: Foo Fighters - Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace. The Foo's best album? Probably not, but it's a fantastic example of their ever growing maturity as a band.
02: Manic Street Preachers - Send Away The Tigers The Manics finally remembered this year that music should be fun!
03: Rufus Wainwirght - Release The Stars Once more Rufus delivers some of the most bbeautiful music available today.
04: Bat For Lashes - Fur And Gold Hanting, ethereal music that just grows and grows.
05: Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Raising Sand I reallly wasn;t convinced that this would work, boy was I wrong! Feels almost like Plant has been building up to this record for years
06: Jesse Malin - Glitter In The Gutter Yes, it's pop, but it's also well written and, crucially, fun!
07: David Ford - Songs For The Road A great songwriter and performer, this second album comes off like a bunch of Damien Rice's nightmares.
08: Luke Toms - The Forever House Wacky, fun and apparantly still unreleased, but this is a true throwback album, a mishmash of everything musically that has gone before, yet sounding very fresh - want to know more, give me a shout...
09: Teddy Thompson - Upfront and Down Low Yes, it's an Englishman singing country, but there aren't many other young men around who encapsulate the sadness of the genre this well.

I'll work on my list... but it constantly puzzles me that although the same albums end up on multiple lists as being some of the best music released in 2007, they almost all remain virtually unknown in the music world at large.

I think that to find half decent new material you need to work to find it (since radio sucks - and sucks hard). I don't even bother listening to radio anymore - I learn about good new stuff from sites like this, Last.fm, and Paste Magazine.
