GORD'S TOUR CANCELLED - TLB - 08-20-2003

Aug 17-26, Denver to Portland
cancelled, as per Ticketbastard.com
Still waiting on word for Spokane, 3 BC shows, & Seattle

Lack of ticket sales, I guess??

I admit, when Gord's tour was first announced, I really wondered if Gord could sell enough tickets to play the same swing The Hip usually do on their tours - Colorado, Arizona, California, Oregon.

On their own, The Hip have a tough time filling 2000 seat venues on this western swing. I certainly thought Gord would have a tougher time getting just a quarter of the sales The Hip do, therefore making each stop on his West Coast tour unfeasible, and inevitably cancelled.

Why the heck Jake Gold would book Gord into this western swing is beyond me.

Cry aw, poor Gord...
I wouldn't be here if I hadn't seen him in Detroit. We only went because we were missing the schnitzle at Jacoby's next door and I checked to see who'd be playing that night since we'd be down there anyway, and went 'cos I knew him from the Hip. But had I not known him from the Hip, we wouldn't have gone. Guess no one knows the Hip out there...

Such a shame the rest of the world is being deprived of such a good (albeit short) show and artist! But that how the game goes I guess Cry

Yeah, spooky eh? I wouldn't have known about it unless it was for Mark. I feel very bad for him, considering the lengths he goes to. He found out about all of this AT THE VENUE for god's sake! You think Gord's camp would've let us know somehow, before Mark wasted his well-earned money on useless airplane tickets.

Yeah, I had tickets to tonight's show in Salt Lake City, and I'm beginning to wonder if I had the only three tickets sold for the entire concert. A bummer indeed. at first I thought it was just the SLC show, and I strongly suspected it would be lack of ticket sales. But the enitre tour?? wow. I agree - whoever booked these shows vastly overestimated Gord's appeal as a solo artist in this neck of the woods. Granted, the venue they were to have played only holds 346 people max, but from what I understand, the Hip themselves didn't exactly pack the place when they played the same room seven years ago. Oh well.

p.s. It continues to baffle me how the same man can play to 30,000 people in buffalo and the following month fail to sell enough tickets for a tiny bar-room gig in the same country.

I don't know much about the music biz but I would think the promoter of the show handles what venue Gord would be booked in. Jake would probably just sign the OK. But then again I have no idea.

I loved going to these Gord shows just to see the crowds reaction, etc. to the stuff he's performing. I do however truly believe these shows would of sold significantly better if it was billed as "Gord Downie - solo/acoustic" and he would perform both his solo stuff and some Hip stuff. That being said I still loved the 20 Gord shows I got to go to this summer.

Yep pretty spooky. And true Gord's camp should have let the fans know. I'm assuming everything happened pretty quickly and it was a sudden decision. Although if lack of sales is the reason behind the cancellations, they could have seen this coming a while back. Even if they wanted to let things develop and were hoping for some last minute sales, they could have sent out a statement at least by last weekend at the latest. This is just shitty Sad

All the US dates are gone - yet they still appear when you do a search on Cash Brothers.

Maybe it was Rounder (Gord's record label) that cancelled the tour.

The gig in Buffalo is almost always a sure thing though. The concert is free and it is just a big party. People go, even if they don't know who is playing...just to drink & hang out. It is the "thing" to do on Thursdays.

If the tour was indeed cancelled because lack of ticket sales, I really hope this doesn't discourage Gord from making any future solo records....I have a feeling it won't though... :thumb:

You know what's wierd though, Detroit's a border town too and the turnout there was dismal. I have noticed, however, that radio stations here don't play the Hip at all (and certainly no Gord)...maybe that's why. Even though 89X is a Canadian-owned station and thus have to fill the Canadian-content quota, they don't play them! :? It's all about marketing.

Please don't tell me the Canadian Dates are cancelled too. I'm flying to Halifax for the Gord show on the 12th. How can we find out if this is for sure?!? You'd think Wiener Art would send out an email about it.

I can not agree more about commercial radio, that it is all about marketing. I grew up on the border as well and my hometown radio station never played the hip eventhough it across the lake for Kingston. Now I live in Atl and the radio is purely awful.

I also think the Gord's music is not radio friendly (ie he does not look like jailbait dressed like a stripper) But there is hope because I think this rap-rock stuff/ tenny bopper stuff has live its life and musical tastes are getting back to "roots"
