This being my first time seeing Gord on his solo tour I was just throwing around some ideas in my head about meeting him. He'll be playing at a small venue here in Halifax at the Marquee (300 people max I think) and it would be the best/only chance Id have to meet him, shake his hand and tell him how much I love his music, because It wont happen when he's on tour with the Hip.
I dont want to invade his privacy or space but I thought it would be cool to shake his hand, say a few words, get him to sign my CMG poetry book/cd and have a picture taken with him. That's just myself, not the other hoards of people that would want to do the same. I just don't want to feel like Im bugging him.
Anyone care to share their thoughts or experiences on meeting Gord? Maybe make some suggestions?

In Detroit Gord signed Kevin's (fan from Strathroy) CMG Poetry book and he was impressed that he had it (think he said "Oh wow"). My only regret is that when I met Gord I didn't kiss or hug him. Next time! :mrgreen:

Wait, wait, and wait even more. Wait at the venue's artist entrance/exit. Wait at the tour bus. If you're able to, see what they drive up in before the show, then you know what vehicle to look for after the show (worked for me in Victoria).
For Gord solo in Calgary, 2001, we waited almost 3 hours, but he did come out and was very gracious with all of the approximately 20 fans left. With the Hip, I've followed the same plan and have met them all twice.
For Gord solo this time around, just watch Gord's bodyguard Ricky Wellington (tall afro-canadian guy). If Gord is leaving the venue for the night, Ricky is going with him.
The following sounds a bit secretive, but don't tell alot of people what you are doing. When I've done that, word spreads within five minutes what I'm doing, then people latch on and wait. My best luck has come when I've hung out "in the back" of the crowd, patiently waiting. To all the fans leaving the venue, you don't look like you're waiting for Gord.
Have your CMG book and a brand new 'Sharpie' ready to go, this will make the whole thing easier for Gord. I've seen people freeze because they didn't bring a Sharpie, then incessantly search for one, or even borrow yours. I've also seen people ask him for a picture and not have a camera, then they search for someone to take a pic while at the same time wasting Gord's time and cutting other fans' "Gord-time".
You should be able to do it easy this time around. Gord will do everything you mentioned; autograph, picture, & some small talk, just be patient.
Know what you're going to say to him, but don't ramble. He really does try and converse with the fans, instead of just nodding his head saying "yup yup yup, ok next one...."

Don't forget to ask him if the Bruins should pick up CuJo. Last year in Victoria, we got him talking when we mentioned how Guerin left Boston for Dallas.

Just be patient, because Gord's infamous for taking a while to come out. He usually takes a shower, then the order in or have something ready to eat. He's been known to play cards or watch some sports on the tube before he even ventures out. Sometimes we've waited a good 2 or 3 hours for him. But it's worth the wait. Be patient! It was strange, however, because in Buffalo (for his solo performance on July 3rd), he was just hanging around backstage before he went up on stage...people could easily walk up to him...because 'backstage' in Buffalo (an outdoor event) meant open to the public, you were just barracaded by a little fence.

I met him when he was here in Atlanta after the show and he was very gracious and thankful that we waited for him. But it was only 5 people waiting. I was taking to Dr Pee for about 10 mins before he came out. He signed my CMG book "Mike's orange book" and even posed for a picture evethough he looked like he wanted to get on the road.
Since this was Altanta, Gord was just waking around the bar before the show with family and band mates. so my reccomedation is try to go early.
Anyway best of luck on meeting him

I forgot to add previously (hopefully not taken as gloating). I have met Gord + band 2X previouly. Once in St Louis on the Phantom Power tour and Once in Chapel Hill NC on TATH tour. Both times I had various members sign things but neither time the whole band. Each time I waited only about an hour.
In Chapel Hill, Gord signed my TATH album. "Watertown- Viva lost Vinyl" Since we were talking about where we were from. Also Gord signed a friend of mine's shirt "your shoulder leans into heavy loads" I have no idea on what was meant by that
Again they were very gracious for us waiting.

Hey High, if Gord wears that tattered yellow baseball hat can you make a mental note if that thread is still hanging from it. Actually you can't miss it.
Over at the his website there are some new pictures but no dates so I don't know when they're from. I'm really curious to know how long it lasts before someone reaches over and pulls it off.
Does anyone know if he's ever played with his shirt off? In one picture his shirt is completely drenched...yum. He's hot (pun intended) yeah I know I'm lame :roll:

On the solo tour (atleast the US shows) Gord is very approachable. His "crew" is only Shelley (tour manager), Phil (sound guy) and Chris (tech). No personal security, bodyguard, etc. Probably the best place to meet him is by the tour bus.
I talked to Gord about the Neil Young Greendale show when I met him at the Philadelphia meet + greet. Both of us agreed that it was one of the best rock shows of all-time.

Thanks for the info guys. Some Hip "veterans" such as Jamie (thehip11) and Rory will be at the show too. They may be able to offer some advice when the time comes.

Okay, I've seen The Hip live 23 times...Gord solo twice...and have seen about 15 other bootleg videos...none of which I have seen nor heard of Gord taking off his shirt. I think he's self-conscious about his bony figure!
Anyone else know about him taking his shirt off??

I do enjoy the drenched white shirts however! :thumb:
If you ever see Incubus Brandon ALWAYS takes his shirt off!
It is a treat, but to me... he can't even come close to the appeal that Gord has!

You use the Img button Dyersbay.
Click Img, then post the address of where the picture is at and then click Img again. The pic should then appear.
