Hip- Their own lights? - Ballgame - 04-29-2007

Was at the Philly show and meet some nice people. Mostly people from Canada that now live in Philly.

Anyway Ive seen 13 some odd Hip shows now and this one was good but they used the house lights. All but one show Ive seen they have had their own lights. The ones that shoot beam of colored lights and when Rob would do a solo it would blaze on him.
These tickets were around $40 with all the stupid service charges. So the show was good but I was expecting to see their light show. After all this is a "show".

So my long winded question is have they used their own lights so far on the tour? Did they have them in Atlantic City? My buddy thought maybe the venue stage wasnt big enough for them

The Tragically Hip Think 'Out Of The Box' With DL.2s

Picture the band in a box, interior-decorated with 12 High End Systems DL.2 projections all around. That's the set design for The Tragically Hip, touring North America to promote their new CD World Container.

Says LD Brent Clark, "The DL.2 looks pretty cool and I was really surprised by the brightness and the edge blending. They are way brighter than I thought and creating the Collage( (using Collage Generator software feature) on 12 of them a day is actually pretty easy. Also to be able to move the image around from the band to the house to the rear screens is so cool. DL.2 is an amazing light!"

Concerning the overall set design, Clark says, "The idea was to make a box (relating to the CD title World Container) and then project images from around the world. We contracted a company from Vancouver called The Collective to film all the content, which is totally reality-based."

Mainlight Industries supplied the DL.2s to the tour's main lighting contractor, Christie Lites. Christie techs include Jason Lewis, Denis Lee and Scott McLaughlin. "Both Christie and Mainlight were fantastic in their support of this project," says Clark. "Both companies helped me out in so many ways and went the extra mile for me. It was an absolute pleasure to deal with them." The tour started in late January in Canada and runs through the U.S. until April 29.

they didnt have that. It was as if a bar band was playing. Not a national touring band that chanrges $40 a ticket

The restrictions of the small venue size may have been the prevailing reason the tours set was not used. They did not use it at the Seattle show and that was a medium size venue. Perhaps they make the decision based on the aesthetics of the room. Sometimes less is more when creating a performance space.

of course. Im not trying to bitch. Im just trying to find out why their lights weren't there.

Ive played there with my band back in the day. We used the same lights.

it was a great show. very raw and maybe that was the point. I wonder if anyone taped the show? That would be great. lots of slow song

One thing I did notice for the Detroit shows that was different than past tours was the use of the "house" light system. Not a big deal but it was noticable. I was always impressed with the Hips rotating spots positioned all over the stage.

Truthfully though, they didn't need them IMO. The band was tighter, set lists were terrific and Gord was 100 times more animated than in tours past.
