Question about DVD authoring - d_alex_d - 04-25-2007

All illegalness aside, I'm hoping someone can answer my question. Maybe some of the DVD creators out there.

I have downloaded a bunch of TV shows and I want to be able to burn onto a DVD. The video files are just avi's that I have been watching in quicktime but when I try to burn them, I use Toast 7, they are way to big to fit onto a dvd and to burn a season's worth, say 13 or so episodes, I would have to use 5 or so DVD's. I have also tried iDVD (i'm on a mac if you couldnt tell), and obvisouly again, its the same thing.

Is there any software out there that could compress these AVI's, or is there any other options out there?

By the way, I'm sure this is illegal, but I'm sure a lot of ppl out there would do it or could do it, let's help eahc other out :mrgreen:

If you want to have them in a video format that your standard DVD player will play, you're limited to 2 or 4 hours of play time.

You can put them on the disc in a compressed format and depending on your DVD player, you'll be able to play them. In this case, you are limited based on size, not time.

It's only illegal if you didn't watch the shows on TV the first time - complete with commercials - and plan on distributing them. You can tape shows for personal use.

I think that there may be a way to use Handbrake to make this work mor efficiently, but I'm not sure. I just burn my AVI files to disc as data and watch them on my computer.

i use nero to burn dvd's. You can use the "recode" feature in nero to compress while still in video_ts (.vob) form and then burns to your dvd.

Nero is for Windows only. Alex is a Mac user.

Thanks guys,

I'll look into Handbrake. I've never used it before, as I don't have an iPod video, just the old iPod mini, I've never had to compress much video before.

I'll let ya know how she goes.
