Future Hip Tour Idea. - Hard Canadian - 04-08-2007

So i had a thought the other day and i decided to post it here to get some feed back. When The Hip are done tourning for world container, why not make one more tour, not another world container tour, just a tour. my idea is to break the show into two sets, instead of having an encore. the first set play an album from start to finish, have an intermission (20 min. or so) then come back on and play another album from start to finish. make each night different from selecting albums randomly. Imagine this....

The Hip come out and play Phantom Power in its entirerty, take a 20 minute break and then play all of Fully Completely. Then the next night they start off with Up To Here and finish with Day For Night.

I personally really like the idea, what do all of you think of the idea?

Play whole albums start to finish...naaaah I dont like that idea. Im not saying I wouldnt go to a Hip show if they did that, I would just rather hear a mix of songs new and old. Playing albums start to finish would take the excitement out of the shows for me, one of the best things about a rock show is the unknown factor..what will they play next? How many encores, a cover song?? All that gets taken away, I wouldnt want to go to a show already knowing exactely whats going to be played and in what order, thats no fun.

But since were tossing ideas out, I personally would rather they do long "evening with" sets again, those shows were awesome. Even moreso I'd rather the band do acoustic only shows in small venues, its something that they've never done before, I'd be all over it.

It's worked for other bands (well, kinda... they normally do a whole album then a set of hits).

I don't see it ever happening, just for the sake of appeal. There are those who either particularily love/hate certain albums, and it would be one bummer if you went to the show and they played your least favorite album. Its not like: "Meh, its not my favorite song, but it'll be over in five minutes" it's more like: "Damn, I think I'll go grab a meal while they play this album." That's a little extreme, but it could become torture, especially with the lack of setlist-surprise. We own the albums, if we want to hear that, it's available.

But, while we're in fantasy mode and since I wouldn't care one way or another as I enjoy the entire catologue, it would be interesting to see how an album paces out in the live scenario, and to hear a few of those little nuggets that strayed along the way.

I seen Cheap Trick in the mid to late 90's do it. They played small clubs performing one of there first 3 or 5 albums all the way through. With all four original guys, they sounded great and you could tell both the band and audience were diggin it. Here in Detroit they played 3 shows in a row at St Andrews Hall which seats about 1200. The night I went they did the entire "In Color" cd then did about 6 songs then a 3 song encore.

Could you imagine hearing Road Apples all the way through, then 6-10 other tunes? How cool would that be?

sunday night of the clun tour in Calgary they did the entire WC cd... Probably the only time I will hear some of those songs live... I like the idea... Phantom - Day for Night would be efffing awesome!!

Interesting idea.
Just not something that they would consider though.
11 albums and songs that they haven't played in years !
Imagine the rehearsals needed to accomplish this !

I liked on the Stones "Licks Tour" where they chose a "album theme" and did 3 songs in a row from a specific album. Usually the songs were ones not normally done in concert.

When I went to see them at the ACC the picked the album "Let it Bleed" and did the title track, "Monkey Man" and "Love In Vain".............(okay, well not rarely done on concert, bot not warhorses either)

Hip could do something similar, maybe take 5 songs off of a specific album

This works especially well for concept albums - with a unifying theme or story depicted throughout the whole album. Rush's 2112 or just about anything by Pink Floyd (especially Dark Side and The Wall), and many other albums fall into this category. Hip albums are a different breed. I would love to hear Phantom Power or Fully Completely played all the way through, but I'm just as happy to get a good mix.

I learned a long time ago not to put in a Pink Floyd CD when you have your CD player on "shuffle" or to buy any Pink Floyd "Greatest Hits" album. Pink Floyd albums have to be listened to straight through, when songs are out of order, or at random, they lose so much ...............

Roger Waters doesn't conceive of the album as a collection of songs but as a single piece of music with an arc, building to a climax. So yeah, this works for a Pink Floyd album. (The post-Water's Floyd album, however, can be put on shuffle. I like to shuffle mine out to the curb and leave them for the garbageman. Where was I?)

Oh, yeah, not so good an idea for a Hip show. Phantom Power and DFN you could get away with. TATH and IVL back to back? I'd be pretty pissed if I paid money to hear that.

Even with DFN, which is probably best suited to this, I don't think would work. Unlike The Wall or something of that ilk, nothing is lost by mixing up the songs, nothing is gained by playing the album as an album. But what you lose by playing the album as an album is the sense of spontaneity. You know what's coming next.
