Yeah, one of the sweetest of the fan pieces! Good job!
I really liked it. All of you articulated my thoughts on the Hip and why I'm a fan in a much better way than i ever could. I liked how i "knew" most of the fans in it! Lol! I even happened to meet the older guy in the video with the "Randy Bachman" guitar and the Hip tattoo this past weekend at the NY shows!
Loved the behind the scenes stuff and can't wait to watch it again, as the sound was really bad in the theatre.
Had a nice conversation with Andy afterwards about the whole thing too. This one is truly for the fans.

Bought the bluray at HMV tonight. Cool film. The backstage stuff is great, and some of the fans they interview are absolutely hardcore. Interesting that after all these years these guys still get super nervous before a show. I suppose you could never get used to playing in front of that many people.

Now that I've had a few hours to think about it, my thoughts are the doc was good, but not great. It had flashes of greatness, but tried to do too much and jumped all over the place. If the director kept a tighter focus on the band/show, or tied everything in a little better, I think I would be more satisfied. For example, the town hall meeting discussion could have been revisited by mentioning what a cluster fuck transportation (and everything else) was for those at Bobcaygeon.
I was left with the impression that the doc went for quantity over quality with all of the fans stories. Granted, some of them were uninteresting to me so I might be biased. It left me wanting more backstage or concert related footage, so it's a shame to read that isn't included on the BluRay.

This is pretty much how I feel. I would have skipped most of the concert footage, interviewed more regular folks (not the fans just locals) and definitely included the exit chaos. And a follow up with the town council, the bar owner, the fans, locals, etc.
It started off as a doc about the gig, turned into a concert film, but never executed either.
As well many of the fans that did make the final cut seemed to be the extreme not the norm. I understand that extremes are more interesting but at points it felt contrived.
PS: I was interviewed but didn't make the final cut...

Did you see the two of us talking about one another throughout the doc? We made the trailer.
Your interviews were a highlight for sure. I think my wife even teared up!

My date for the evening eventually started rolling her eyes after I kept saying "I know that person from the Hipbase, I know that person from the Hipbase."
I too was concerned about the sound; it'll be interesting to see what it's like at home. But man, I love High-Def. The picture quality, especially of the concert footage, is just unreal.

I completely agree. I enjoyed the film and I'm happy to own it, but it felt incomplete and left me wanting more. Also, and I hate to harp on this, but Gord's singing was just plain awful on a few of those songs. Kind of a shame that those particular performances are now captured forever for posterity. I was watching the doc with a friend of mine who I've been trying to convert. She's never seen them live before, and while she enjoyed the fan interviews and the backstage scenes, her first comment during the live footage was "yikes, does he always sound that rough?" Needless to say, she will remain on the fence when it comes to the Hip.

I think that the audio mix for the concert portions was TERRIBLE. Especially Gord's voice.

I am in same camp- including the PS. It was good, but not great. It seems as if it tried to straddle the line between a documentary on everything behind the show (including fans, locals, crew and the band) and a concert film- resulting in lots of missed opportunities on both sides. The end result might end up being that it doesn't fully satisfy anyone- those who would have preferred more of documentary on everything behind the show- before and after- (my personal preference) and those who were expecting more concert footage and interviews with the band. Perhaps one way of dealing with that would have been to focus on the behind the show material, and then include some of the songs from the concert as extras on the dvd/blueray.
I also agree with the comment regarding the focus on extremes (whether it be fans, locals, or the hype of the show/annointing of the show as a seminal moment before the show had actually occurred) led to it feeling contrived in a few spots. That approach definitely added some interest and a few laughs, but was it representative of the locals or the fans (both casual and serious) that attended the show and were part of the experience? Probably not.
However, still an interesting and enjoyable piece for any Hip fan, especially for those that attended the show in person (and whose lasting memory is not one of bus and traffic nightmares).

Not disappointed in the content....just the lack of it. For $25 would providing the whole concert have been difficult.....considering it he same content is on both discs?

One of these days somebody needs to make a full-on thoroughly researched rockumentary about the Hip and their career. I'd love to see something done in the style of recent rock docs like Pearl Jam Twenty or Foo Fighters Back & Forth. I recently watched the Mark Sandman/Morphine documentary "Cure for Pain", and it was hands down one of the best films I've seen all year, period. It would be wonderful to see the Hip get the same kind of treatment in the near future.
Also, will someone please write a freakin' book about these guys already? It's long overdue.

I think it was good. They sure did leave a lot of stuff on the cutting floor, they were here talking with us for just under 2 hours and only chose about 1 minute of stuff for the movie which in my opinion was not what I would have chosen. But hey, there was a lot of cool stuff to, the guy with the vision issue who sees music in colour, it was nice how they played the next song with all the colours swirling around, as if to give us a view on how that gentleman sees the music. The lady with the Tragically Chip Cookies was kinda funny, I kept thinking she must be puttin hash in them or something. My wife was dissapointed that he put the part of her explaining about bobcageyon song in there as she felt I blindsided her with the need for her to answer, she was content just letting me do the talking but I kinda forced her hand in saying something. My kids did a lot of talkin but none of that made the cut. Overall, I did enjoy the movie a lot. Sure there are a lot of points of view on how it could have or should have been done but it is what it is. I like the concert footage and behind the scenes stuff best. The interviews just seem all over the place, not as much focus as I felt there should have been. I read a review today on the movie and the guy gave it a 4/5. I agree with his rating as he seemed to get what Andy was trying to do more than the normal reviewer who just wants to be amazed by everything and in awe or some stuff.

As a fan I'll buy it - a completists view perhaps. It's good, but like so many things Hip, it could've been better. Hip Club, Live From The Vault, it goes on and on...
