Nashville, Tenn. – Nashville Predators Executive Vice President/General Manager David Poile announced today that Predators goaltender Tomas Vokoun has been diagnosed with a blood condition called pelvic thrombophlebitis and is undergoing treatment at Baptist Hospital under the supervision of Predators head team physician Dr. Michael Pagnani, M.D. and team internist Dr. Richard Garman, M.D. While a full recovery is expected, Vokoun will miss the remainder of the 2005-06 regular season and post-season.

“Since being diagnosed with this condition, Tomas has been hospitalized and is receiving medication and undergoing additional tests,” said Poile. “His treatment, which includes blood-thinning medication, will prohibit him from playing hockey through the remainder of this season. He will continue to be monitored by Dr. Pagnani and Dr. Garman and we are hopeful that he will be discharged from Baptist Hospital in the next few days.”

“Tomas had pain in his lower back after our game against St. Louis on April 1,” explained Pagnani. “After initial MRI tests of his back showed nothing to explain his back pain, further studies were performed that revealed blood clots located in veins in his lower abdomen. Tomas did not sustain an injury to this area, and the tests have not revealed any definite cause for the blood clots.”

“The treatment for this uncommon medical condition is blood-thinning medication, and he will require this treatment for a number of weeks,” added Dr. Garman. “In time, we expect a full recovery.”

Vokoun, 29 (7/2/76), has posted a record of 36-18-7 with a 2.67 goals-against average and .919 save percentage in 61 games for the Predators this season. The franchise’s all-time winningest goaltender ranks among NHL leaders in wins and save percentage. He has been named the NHL’s Defensive Player of the Week twice this season, and the Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic native helped lead his country to a bronze medal at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Turin, Italy.

“Tomas is an extremely important and valuable part of our team, and his presence will be missed,” said Poile. “Our thoughts and support are with him as he begins the recovery process, and we are confident that he will have a complete recovery. We know what kind of a person and what kind of a competitor he is; that being said, he will do everything in his power to get back on the ice, and we look forward to seeing him in training camp this fall.”

Poor Preds. I think I'll be avoiding them in the office playoff pool. I can't wait for the impending Al Strachan article that blames the salary cap for this.

I imagine Flames fans aren't too upset over this news though.

You would be correct. But man, that is a HUGE blow to a team that was expected to do some damage in the post season. I actually feel bad for them. Ya can't win in the playoffs without an elite goaltender. So who do they use now? Chris Mason?? I checked the stats on their other backup, Pekka Rinne, and the guy has yet to play a game in the NHL. Unless one of these guys suddenly goes on a hot streak, me thinks the Preds are screwed.

GO HABS! Way to take down Ottawa again, suddenly Im not so worried about playing them in the first round. Yeah the playoffs are a different game, but psychologically we have it in our heads that we can beat them and it takes some of the fear out of your game. Conifidence is high and that is always a good thing, hopefully we can keep it up. Ottawa is still great team, but without Hasek and Chara, they are vulnerable. Nice to see Abs have another solid game as well.

Oh brother, couldnt leave it alone eh. Thats ok cfern, I love your candor. But I think you kind of missed my point, I was just pointing it out that since we most likely will be playing them in the playoffs, that its a nice confindence boost for the team to beat them twice in the last week, just before the playoffs. They still have a good team despite the injuries, plus
a wins a win and its a positive for the team heading for the playoffs thast all. And hey we did beat them 5-3 last week, so there! :wink:

I totally agree, but as long as were in the playoffs, there's always a glimmer of hope, and that's all I got right now. Plus I think if Montreal plays at its full potential, we could give them a good run for their money, but it won't be easy. But hey, anything can happen in the playoffs and I cant wait for it to start. I'll go bananas if they pull off an upset in the first round.

A question for you Sabres fans: to be a Sabres fan is it mandated that you must become obsessed with the Leafs? I mean, as a Leaf fan the Sabres have been nothing more than a gnat. I'm more concerned with disliking teams from the old Norris division, the Habs, and the Flyers (I'd include the Sens but, first of all, there's no such thing as a real Sens fan, and, second of all, it's tough to feel dislike towards a team that your favourite team knocked out of the playoffs four (4) straight times.

Anyway, I just find this obsession that all Sabres fans have with the Leafs to be bizarre, in a "Let's name our kids Apple and Moses" kind of way.....
