Quote:Canada didn't play Russia in last years tourney

Who did they play in the final last year? Was it the US or did they play in the bronze medal game?

- Douglas - 01-05-2005

Those damn Yanks beat us with 3 in the 3rd last year. 4-3 final I think.

- Douglas - 01-05-2005

I would sure like to know why Canada winning gold pisses Tiger off so much. Is his last name Larionov? And saying we should question Barker for not playing? He had Mono for Christ sake! Here's a quarter Tiger, go ahead and buy a clue.

The U.S. defeated Canada in last year's final.

P.S. When you quoted me above, what happened to my apostrophe in "year's"? :what

What I'm getting from his posts is that he has an intense dislike for any form of nationalism, he thinks we shouldn't care what hockey players do because they don't care what we do, he thinks people put Gretzky on some Jesus-like pedestal (which bugs him), and he thinks that any form of celebrating a goal is showboating. So being Canadian and proud of it is bad, and being Canadian and being a proud hockey player is especially evil.

My copy and paste function wasn't working for some reason so I just re-typed your sentence and forgot the apostrophe.

Are you an analyst by the way?

Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin All the hate! I love it! All the personal attacks are great!

CanuckCourage Wrote:Don't really have time before work to properly respond to your post, but a few quick points. Yes Crosby was targeted by other teams, if you watched the games you would have seen that. Gretzky was crosschecked, you remember when Gary Suter crosschecked him from behind and took him out of the 91 Canada Cup. Of course Corson was a quitter, but in his defense he had some mental health issues. Who's saying Gretzky's the Messiah? Keep this perspective, this is hockey, and last I looked it was being discussed in that context. The team represented our country in a manner that makes me proud, with their class and skill.

How do you know I didn't watch the games you pompous moron? I know Crosby was targeted but not the the degree that Ovechkin was targeted in the final game. The Canadians hit him at almost literally every turn and I applaud them because physical play is a very important part of Canada's game. Yes, Gretzky was cross checked in the 91 Canada Cup, which I think is the only actual hit he took his whole career. It's not his fault, because he is one of the greatest players ever and he was a superstar, but it is true. I'll give the team this, they were DOMINANT and had lots of skill. I don't see what they did that showed their great class though. I'm not saying they don't have any class but what did they specifically do to prove their classiness?

tigerthelion Wrote:How do you know Ovechkin wasn't legitimately injured? He must be a great player because he's the only guy team Canada concentrated on during the game. You didn't see Crosby being the target of such physical play. That's all fine and I like the physical aspect of the game, and Phaneuf is a truck, but Canada knew if they all took shots at Ovechkin their chances of winning went up. Therefore, Ovechkin was taken off his game and didn't seem to have his A-game anyway. Great strategy by Canada but Ovechkin could have been injured. Maybe Cam Barker should be questioned for not playing. Who knows?

IMO, I think the Canadians have as much arrogance as the Russians. Seeing them hug and showboat after a goal makes me turn the channel. I guess I don't have the love and admiration of these players as most Canadian fans. Do you think Crosby or Carter or Phaneuf or Bergeron give a crap about how my life is going or anyone else's life for that matter? Why should I feel bad for them if they lose or ecstatic if they win? It's a hockey game and it's good that they won but I'm not happy for any individual player. I could care less if they accomplish something because they are just a bunch of teenage kids. The only difference between them and some kids down my street is that they can play hockey a little better. It doesn't make me care for their lives any differently than I care for people in general. So Ovechkin is a crybaby egomaniac but Crosby is a good kid? The same Crosby that showed up the other team by putting the puck on the blade of his stick and scoring a showboat goal a while back while his team was already winning by a large margin? How is Crosby not a showboat? I smell double standard.

Was Gretzky ever checked into the boards when he played? I imagine if Ovechkin had the room that Gretzky had to roam around he may have scored a few goals. It amazes me that people are so critical of this kid without knowing the facts. Maybe he really was injured. He can't score 5 a night you know. Maybe one of the borderline charges the Canadian players took at him injured his shoulder.

So was Shane Corson right for leaving his team DURING the playoffs a few years ago? FOR QUITTING ON HIS TEAM!!!! Everyone likes attacking the Russian players but every country has its whiners and babies.

PS, just remember guys that Gretzky is a human being. He's not the Messiah and he won't bring happiness to the world. He was a great hockey player who it seems can do no wrong. The guy is a normal guy who shouldn't be treated like he cured cancer or something. The Gretzky nuthugging is a little pathetic IMO.

Ummm, did a hockey player steal your girlfriend back in the day or something?

(1) As CanuckCourage pointed out, Crosby was targeted ALL tourney.

(2) Why should Crosby or Carter or Phaneuf or Bergeron give a crap about how your life is going? Easily the strangest statement in your ramble of strange statements.

(3) The same Crosby that showed up the other team by putting the puck on the blade of his stick and scoring a showboat goal a while back while his team was already winning by a large margin? - I think there's a weeeeeeeee bit of a difference between a 16 year old doing something like this, and a 19 year old openly taunting fans and the opposition. Some see what Crosby did as being creative. Others saw it as him being a showboat. The point is, it depends on your vantage point. But what Ovechkin (and Malkin) did was pure taunting.

(4) Seeing them hug and showboat after a goal makes me turn the channel. Huh? Watching players celebrate a goal in the biggest tournament of their lives to date makes you change the channel? Why do you even bother watching then. In case you haven't figured this out yet, this tourney is a VERY big deal to these kids.
(5) Are you seriously comparing Ovechkin to Gretzky? That's rich.
(6) So was Shane Corson right for leaving his team DURING the playoffs a few years ago? FOR QUITTING ON HIS TEAM!!!! Umm, no. And who defended him? No one did.
(7) PS, just remember guys that Gretzky is a human being. He's not the Messiah and he won't bring happiness to the world. Can you show me where I called Gretzky "The Messiah"?

Seriously man, with how much these hockey playing teenagers bother you, I really don't understand why you even watch. Canada won with arguably the most dominating performance in the history of this tournament, and they did with class and sportsmanship. If that doesn't make you feel proud of the kids representing your country, than I think you've got some larger issues.

Have a nice day. I know I will.

(1)Targeted, yes. To the degree Canada obliterated Ovechkin, NO.
(2)They shouldn't, as I don't care about their personal lives. I was trying to say that most fans feel bad if these kids happen to lose or ecstatic if they win. Why would you feel bad for a complete stranger? I hear people saying how bad they feel for hockey players all the time and it boggles my mind.
(3)Yes, I may agree with you on this point. Ovechkin was a showboat but he didn't kill anyone. The hatred for him is unbelievable. I'm just wondering if Crosby would face the same criticism by the Canadian public if he acted like Ovechkin. Something tells me he would get a free pass from Canadian fans.
(4)Why do they celebrate a goal when they are already up by five goals like it was a game winning goal? Players shouldn't go apeshit when the game is already decided and they get a meaningless goal.
(5)Nowhere did I directly compare Ovechkin to Gretzky. I will however compare the way both players are treated by the opposition. I know it's early in Ovechkin's career and he hasn't done anything yet but he is good enough that the entire team Canada's goal was to shut him down and not even worry about the rest of the Russians. I'd say Team Canada had plenty of respect for the possible future star. Ovechkin had a bad game, big deal. He doesn't "suck" because of one bad game.
(6)Corson was the first Canadian whiner that popped into my head. I was just pointing out that every country has whiners, not just Russia.
(7)You didn't call Gretzky the messiah but I've only heard Gord Miller and Pierre kiss his ass for the last few years. It started to get to me I guess.

I am having a great day so far.

Not only that, he seems to have trouble grasping the magnitude of being a teenager and representing your country in an international tourney that millions of fellow countrymen and women are watching. Apparently when you are a teenager and you are in the midst of the biggest moment of your life, you shouldn't celebrate when you do something great.

Shame on you boys! How dare you do us proud and get excited about it!

Yes, they can celebrate. I don't, however, see how them winning a gold medal makes Canada a greater country. Shouldn't we, as Canadians, be proud even if they finished last place? When they lost to the US last year, was it that big of a deal?

- grooveless touque - 01-05-2005

tiger...is there ANYTHING in life that brings you joy? And if you ever have occasion to celebrate an occurrence of said event, do you quietly and introspectively applaud while maintaining a perfectly calm demeanour for fear of showing enthusiasm and excitement, which are indicative of actually CARING about something??

AFter the pressure these kids were under ["Canada hasn't won in 7 years", "Last year's team gave away the Gold in the third period", "This is the best team ever to play at the World Juniors"] I can't imagine the maturity and dedication they must have had to maintain their composure. Every goal WAS a reason to truly celebrate, since it was vindication of every ounce of the nation's hopes that was loaded upon their shoulders.

I'd be more irritated, but I kind of feel sorry for you. Heaven forfend we might derive pleasure from something and show it.

Our juniors just won their first gold medal since 1997, and here we are trying to have our moment in the sun here, as great passionate hockey fans we are and you have to come along with your whining and crying and trying to start some debate about nationalisim which isnt even remotely what this thread is about, give it a f-ing rest! As far as Ovechkin goes, he has tons of talent and I think he's gonna be a great player.. BUT you DONT hot dog and shoot your mouth off like that and not expect some retribution, my point earlier was that if he brings that attitude to the NHL he will get straightened out in hurry, you dont think if he taunted the NJ Devils that way, that Scott Stevens wouldnt take him out next time he crossed the blue line? I sure hope someone does, maybe it will shut him up, Id cheer for the kid if he lost his attitude and just stuck to playing the game. And if you actually think I literally wanted someone to break his neck your even stupider than I thought, but after reading several of your posts in this thread, thats quite clear to me anyway. As far as the team hugging and celebrating after scoring goals and you turning the channel, are you for real? Thats the dumbest thing Ive ever heard in this forum, have you ever even watched a sports event in your life? Hockey players have been doing this for years you must miss half of the game with all your channel flipping, OH MY they scored! TURN IT TURN IT!!! I CANT BEAR TO WATCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH you fucking baby. Come on come on say something..........................Im waiting, bring it bring it bring it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I cant wait to hear what witty insightful thoughts you come out with now, something vulgar maybe? Ooo maybe some insults about my mom? Or maybe you can tell us more about your fear of hockey players hugging and how it strangely turns you on :rambo: :rambo:

Thanks for the personal insults. I don't know you and don't give a rat's ass if you agree with me or not. So I need to go to a rink to see what Canada is about? What the hell kind of lunacy is that? So hockey defines Canada and anyone who wouldn't give their firstborn to watch a hockey game is out of the loop? That's funny, when I think of why I love Canada, petty little things like healthcare come to my mind. Of course the health of Canadians isn't as important as going to the local hockey rink. Dude, just click the 'quote' box in the upper right corner of the post you want to reply to.

Not an analyst, just don't like to be misquoted and made to look like an uneducated jackass.

Well, a Hip concert will always cheer me up! I might show a little too much enthusiasm during a concert. There are other things but that's not important.

Listen, it's great that team Canada won. They deserved it and they dominated. Yeah, they were under pressure but people's lives weren't at stake. If Canada failed to win Gold, they would still be loved by Canadians. It's not like they are soldiers over in Iraq risking their lives. I guess I just don't get as much pleasure from watching Team Canada play as some others. I think they played great and represented the country very well but all in all it doesn't get me too excited.
