I give up. What?
If I knew I wouldn't be asking.

Why do you think it has anything to do with it?

Re: "Now For Plan A" Leak Discussion Thread - SoylentGreg - 09-27-2012

Honestly, maybe this is just from the fact that my other favorite band (The Mountain Goats) is streaming their new album that comes out the same day and it just happens to be one of the best albums of their career, but i'm not feeling the patience I normally have with a new Hip release. I maybe like half of this album, tops. At Transformation, The Lookahead(tbqh I like this one because it sounds like something from Grand Bounce), We Want to Be It and the title track are the only ones I could see going on a Hip mixCD in a year. "About This Map" might be the worst song they've ever recorded - the metaphor isn't clever at all and is just grating (the map is of our relationship! and we're all 'about' it, the way lawn darts are strewn 'about' a lawn!) And I dunno, but hearing some middle-aged guy in a rapidly aging rock band shrieking about he's gonna go find 'The Modern Spirit' just leaves me cold. Maybe it'll grow on me in a week (I really hope it does), or maybe it'll sound better when I hear a good chunk of it live in November, but right now this ranks right at the bottom of the Hip catalogue IMO.

Read the liner notes in the booklet. "For Alan Arkin and Madeline Kahn."

It's so strange how we all have different views. For me, Modern Spirit and About this map are in my top 4 songs off this album and so far Man Machine Poem is at the bottom. I still like the song but it doesn't jump out at me as much.

Re: "Now For Plan A" Leak Discussion Thread - sean.bonner - 09-27-2012

Highlights so far for me:
Man Machine Poem
We Want To Be It
Now For Plan A
Goodnight Attawapiskat

Instant classics.

Plan A sounds nothing like anything theyve done on the past 3 albums, but gives me an IVL / Throwing Off Glass feel.

Re: "Now For Plan A" Leak Discussion Thread - Shredd - 09-27-2012

Favorites on two listens:
At Transformation
We Want to Be It
Now for Plan A

I wish the record breathed a little bit more. A lot of unecesaary clutter in some songs. Nothing else has really stuck with me but either way better than the last two records.

Re: "Now For Plan A" Leak Discussion Thread - Shredd - 09-27-2012

Now for Plan A is the best track on the album. Love the IVL feel.

Re: "Now For Plan A" Leak Discussion Thread - Dark Canuck17 - 09-27-2012

That is the great thing about music it is so different for everyone for me I also like it better than the last two top to bottom I liked the last two but I could easily skip tracks on Now for Plan A I will not touch it once play is hit...I too feel some Grand Bounce in this album but I can see how that would be plus I liked Grand Bounce if I had to choose more than WATS...

Re: "Now For Plan A" Leak Discussion Thread - Mr. Lahey - 09-27-2012

I absolutely love this album. I've been listening to the stream non-stop lately. Yes it may be slightly softer than others with less of the rockier stuff, however the music is fantastic and really resonates with me.

Transformation
Classic old-school Hip rock sound. Gord will be Gord on the mic stand. Probably the most appealling for the casual fan.

Man Machine Poem
The only song I don't particularily care for. Reminds me of the Exact Feeling a bit. For some reason the long pauses between the lyrics bother me and the song lacks a bit of flow in the early going. It definatley picks up in the 2nd half. Maybe it will grow on me like many do with time. "ITS............JUST A BIT............................................Averaaaaaage."

The Lookahead
Very catchy upbeat tune. Love the background vocals. A song you want to sing along with.

We Want To Be It
Instantly recognizable Hip sound. I love the guitars. I wasn't a fan of it on the summer tours but I'm into it now.

Streets Ahead
Similar to In View in tempo. Good rock tune. The drums stand out here more than any other track. Thank God Gord's singing is much better here than the bootlegs. Seems to be the most popular based on soundcloud stats. Love to sing along to this one.

Now For Plan A
What a beautiful song. Love the long intro. The lyrics are simple but fantastic. Really hits a chord. One of the top 3.

The Modern Spirit
Another fun and catchy rock song! Great guitars again. Gord really belts it out!

About This Map
My instant favourite. Again, LOVE the guitar sound. Very much reminds me of Are We Family which was my fav on IBE. Simple but effective lyrics. Love the outro music.

Take Forever
See Lookahead and Modern Spirit. Nothing to complain about here. The order of the songs seems nicely balanced.

Done and Done
I can see why some would this is the weakest on the record and in some ways its hard to argue. Personally I love it. "Through, through, through and through" is sang so beautifully. Anyone who's ever had a rough patch in a relationship can relate to this song.

Goodnight Attawapaskat
Great sound here again. A song that's still growing on me but something special may be going on here.

Alot of the songs seem to remind us of other albums like IVL, Grand Bounce. I love the direction they took with this record. It's pleasant and soulful but has plenty of fun injected throughout. I can see the casual fan playing this album on the deck at the cottage moreso than I would WATS. WATS was great but maybe not to the casual fan. Too much production and too many songs trying to be Epic. NFPA is really the band in their comfort zone doing what they do best.

Wow Lahey, you and I have the exact same take on this album. The only difference being that I was an instant fan of Goodnight Attawpiskat. I agree with everything else you said though. Loving this album!!

Re: "Now For Plan A" Leak Discussion Thread - saganfan - 09-27-2012

I like this album. I don´t love it, but it´s possibly the only Hip album where I wouldn´t be prone to skipping anything. No 10s, no zeroes. I can´t complain about that.

I think the best GD project in the last decade is The Grand Bounce, but I like Plan A much better than WATS.

Interesting to read the poster who hated About This Map. Easily my favourite on the disc. The really straightahead rockers don´t speak to me - Modern Spirit, Take Forever - but I´ll give them time. They´re not objectionable, I just can´t find my way in.

Time for another spin!

Holy crap The Modern Spirit is fan-fucking-tastic. I hope they play that song in Syracuse. This song would be amazing live.

I've been spinning this sucker constantly for the last few days. I honestly think this is the best record they've made since the Music@Work/In Violet Light era. Yea, that's right. I said it. Is it up there with the likes of Day for Night or Phantom Power? Not quite. But it's an excellent late-career gem, and while I like some tracks better than others on this disc, there isn't a single song that I skip. Front to back, this is quality material.

I concur. But as the album isn't out yet I can't really comment. Ya never know who's watching, ya can never be too cautious.
