You can't love em all and there ain't no problem with that.
Now if Neil could bring out a good album again that would be great. He's had some good songs since Sleeps With Angels but nothing stellar in any way. Kind of like the 80s string of album but instead of trying out new things he has aimed for bland uninteresting tunes.

Define "stellar".

I think the following are good albums:

Mirror Ball
Silver and Gold
Prairie Wind
Living With War (I think I'm in the minority with this one but I actually do like it)

I do agree that he has never matched the greatness of his 70's music. His newest album is pretty bad (sorry Neil).
I love Neil/live music. I saw him on the living with War tour, it was great. Also saw the Greendale tour...the album alone is only OK, but as a concept and seeing it live was great. I agree with you that Silver and Gold, Mirror Ball, and Prarie wind are great. Chrome Dreams II was only OK.

I know this isn't from WATS but the keyboard riff of In View always reminds me of the chorus from Whenever I Call You Friend by Kenny Loggins - listen at 1:06

Weeks later...

As far as being a Hip fan goes, I consider myself damn lucky. I've loved their last two albums. Even if WATS did take some time to digest. Regardless of all the well-made arguments... and some of the poorly made ones, bottom line is for me, the album is successful. And WC is top 3 for me. And there are people, fans, who don't like either one of those albums. Damn, lucky me!

Re: We Are The Same Discussion - the big kx - 05-21-2009

Anyone else have a deja vu when listening to Queen of the Furrows? Not sure if it's my favourite song on WATS, but it's not bad IMO.

COFFEE GIRL - ashtrayrock - 05-30-2009

your favorite mix tape
you popped it into the deck
don't care it's out of date
old cat power and classic beck

k everyone had stories about meeting band members by chance here's mine...

massey hall
jeff beck about 9yrs ago
lower bar, before the show
i get in line for drinks and gord and rob are right in front of me!
i'm speechless
so i give em the nod and they order
double black russian and a light beer and i say and a "canadian"(beer)
so there i am, what do i say...
like a complete idiot...
i start to razze gord about getting the light beer!
while howlin at rob, the man with the RIGHT kinda double! lol
anyways it worked out somehow that gord bought my beer
no autographs were asked of
i thanked him for the beer
and we went our separate ways

so, pretty much every time i listen to that line in coffee girl i can't help but to think that if i had my shit together i maybe shoulda told em both "hey thanks for the music!!" rather than just havin fun at gord's expense!! oh well....lol

LOVE COFFEE GIRL

Re: We Are The Same Discussion - KingLear - 05-31-2009

Well after many, I don't know how much playing the record I can say i love the album.
But it won't be a one to put in mine top 5.
I am sure that I will love the live versions and hardly can't wait to see them live.
I hope they visit the Netherlands in the end of this year.
I already know that Tilburg is one of the venues.

Upped to 4 stars.

Quote:The strings are not needed anywhere...

I really want to hear all these live.

Was lucky enough to do just that and really enjoyed them, especially Honey, Coffee acoustic, Depression Ste, Queen, and Frozen.

I'd rather have keyboards (per live setting) v. strings.

The whoa's in Recluse and Frozen work live. I change my original opinion.

Coffee - still dislike the trumpet solo. This song would've been better served acoustic.

Re: We Are The Same Discussion - ashtrayrock - 06-02-2009

twice, quite randomly, out of the blue, people asked me the same question/made the same comment, about the beauty in gord's singing. it completely wowed them!

the answer:
track # 5

now the struggle has a name

epic

I totally agree. There is a depth to this album that is unlike any other Hip album. I think Gord may have said it best, "World Container set the table, but WATS is the meal".

Re: We Are The Same Discussion - JT_Stone - 06-13-2009

Can anyone tell me where I can download a copy of the We Are The Same video?

I've been looking for awhile without luck any help would be great!

Re: We Are The Same Discussion - BulletRiddled - 06-14-2009

I really couldn't get in to this album the first few listens. Then it grew on me. Then it lost me again, and I can't get in to it any more. With all the great albums that have come out this year, WATS is pretty underwhelming. I think Bob Rock is on a cruisade to make every band on Earth sound exactly the same.

What is it with comments regarding Bob Rock?

I've said it before and I will say it again.

If The Hip or other bands do not like the direction he's suggesting THEY CAN FIRE HIM!!! It's not like the band is begging producers to work with them in fact I can comfortably say it would be the other way around. By bashing Bob Rock you are in turn bashing The Tragically Hip as it was their choice to work with him & their choice to release the album the way it is!!

emperpenguin Wrote:Couple of points:

Has anyone that claims to hate WATS actually seen it preformed live yet? I think (as all HIP) the songs are better once you hear them live. I didn't like Frozen until I went to the Philly show....turns out it is a great live tune.

WC was also a great Album(IMO). Too bad "Music Lovers" don't feel the same.

I have come to love WATS(didn't at first), and am looking forward to Artpark. :music

I am responding to this query even though it wasn't directed at me(since I don't hate WATS). I do have some dislike for WATS, though.

I disagree that all Hip songs are better after hearing them live. Also, I've found that hearing songs live hasn't really changed my opinion of how much I like a particular Hip album, even if they are better live. Recently, seeing the band tour in support of "WC" didn't change my opinion of the album at all. The Drop Off, Ocean, WC, Rink all sounded GREAT live, but I didn't like the album any better or worse than before. I've come to lose interest in "WC" as time has passed. I'd say that I probably like about six or seven songs but the rest I can do without.
