oh no, not swearing, ooooooooooooooooooo, like OMG he can't say that! you want to know the truth? there is no such thing as "swearing", they're all just words, why do we censor ourselves? what does doing so prove? it doesn't make us any better, it makes us ignorant to ban the use of certain words to express ourselves! wake up people! THIS IS THE INTERNET! this is the last great hope for freedom of speech/expression. i can express myself without having to use "foul" or what some may deem to be "offensive" language, but why should i have to? if what i feel is best expressed with the word F U C K or any other word why should i not (or not be allowed to) use it? Gord says it all the time...haven't you guys ever heard the Ottawa boot with the X-Files theme and George Carlin's "Use Of The Word Fuck" at the end? i hate people who pretend to be all offended when they hear a "swear word", because with all the crazy fucking shit that's going on in the world i think we have a lot more to worry about than people "swearing", we've got genocide, wars, terrorists, pedophiles, murderers, dealers, pushers, pimps, wife/child beaters, necrophiliacs, and all kinds of crazy shit/fuckers out there, and people worry about swearing? I'll try and explain it in simple terms, this is not your site, maybe you haven't noticed , threads get get locked when people like you try to show how tough they are by jammimg as many f-words into a sentence as they can. There is something called class, you wanna explain yourself and express your freedom of speech, do it. But don't justify garbage like "GET THE HELL OUT OF MY COUNTRY AND GO LIVE IN PAKISTAN YOU BASTARD! and " i can f**k your shit up if i ever run into you at a bar." Did anyone watch Bettman on the CBC tonight? I read on TSN.ca that he did quite a good job explaining the league's position.

As he should...the league's position is the more rational and reasonable. The players are greedy; half the clubs in the NHL right now just want to turn a dime in profit. I didn't see it myself, but I've been following it rather closely...I'm glad I wasn't here for DC's lunacy, I'd have only inflamed the situation! "Athletes aren't entertainers"...and Elvis isn't dead!

I've generally tried to ignore him lately, but his posts are sometimes so incredibly ignorant that I can't help myself, and the cycle starts again.

I'm admittedly short on all the details, since hockey isn't my strong suit, so please correct me if I'm wrong....

....but aren't the players willing to continue playing under the current agreement (well, the agreement that just expired?), and would be playing exhibition games as we speak if the owners did not want an altered agreement that includes a salary cap? If this is true, it's doesn't seem fair to call them greedy....stubborn and shortsighted, maybe....

Yes, the players want to keep the current agreement in place and in fact, make some minor concessions (such as cut all salaries by 5% immediately). However, the problem is that the current agreement has escalated salaries to the point that they now take up 75% of all revenues, and half of the teams lose money.

The owners want to run a profitable business, which is a reasonable expectation when it is your money invested. The players feel that the CBA that just expired is fair, and teams losing money are doing so because of mismanagement, not because player salaries are too high.

A salary cap will keep salaries from rising at the rates they have over the past decade, and it will protect small market owners from idiot owners and idiot GMs (Tom Hicks is the best example of an idiot owner, Glen Sather is an example of an idiot GM).

Here's an off-the-wall solution to the NHL's labor / money issues:

Have the players buy-out any owner who wants to sell his team for "fair market value." FMV could be determined by an average of three 3rd party organization's valuations (there are quite a few sports marketing / consulting firms that do this sort of thing, one of which has their values listed in the Chi Trib from time to time (I forget the name of this firm)).

Of course, the players wouldn't go for it since they would have to put up their own capital (plus a decent amount of debt) and assume the business risk.

Here's my idea for a solution: get Daniel Alfredsson to guarantee that players won't accept a cap. Since none of his guarantees come true, the NHLPA would realize they are fighting a lost battle and they'd give in! :thumb:
