opiated Wrote::wink: :thumb: .but it's true..my dad and i were talking about it yesterday...give it up!! unless they are betting on their own teams, who gives a shit what they do...the media wanna topple the great one...did you see the press conference today with wayne?? even though he kept saying, i'm only goin to talk hockey..they wouldn't let it go...to me, that's the crime...
I saw that too, the media are a bunch of dicks. Its not a big deal and I dont know why after Gretzky repeatedly said he would not answer anymore questions about the gambling scandal, and he was proven not to be involved in it, the media just wouldnt let it go  think of something else to ask. It gets tired and boring to watch and hear about over and over and over and over again

I can't wait 2 weeks for real hockey!

Although i love "real" hockey, i can't wait for the Olympic hockey to start! REALLY looking forward to it. I love watching all events, but men's hockey is definitely the best.

After a few days and more of this betting operation news, it seems clear to me that Janet Gretzky placed bets (which is not illegal) and Wayne is guilty of nothing more than lying in an effort to shield his wife from bad publicity (again, not illegal).
And for this, he is getting crucified by the media.
Pathetic.
Some of these ink-stained wretches are saying Gretzky shoudn't go to Italy because he will be a distraction. Someone oughta tell these guys that THEY are the only reason any sort of distraction exists! Get off his back for cripes' sake. If evidence arises later that he did something illegal, then fine, go after him, but until then give it a frickin' rest!
Anyway, I'm looking forward to the men's Olympic hockey as well... it is going to be great!

Actually J-Monster, In the United States betting on Sports, unless it is online, which links to a Caribbean bank, or is in the State of Nevada, is 100% Illegal.
You can't walk down the street to your local bookie and place bets on football in the US...and that goes for Canada too btw. Fortunately for us we have ProLine as a betting outlet if that happens to be your vice.
Regardless, I couldn't agree more with you more...doesn't it seem like the media almost seems disappointed that Wayne had nothing to do with it??? I don't think it'll be a big deal at the Olympics whatsoever. This whole scandal didn't even make a real blip on the news radars in Europe...or the US for that matter.

Not true Mr. Goulet. There is
nothing illegal in Canada or the US with placing wagers. What
is illegal is taking a percentage of the wager.

I stand corrected...

So let me get this straight:
If I place a bet with Johnny Four Fingers down at Pauley's Meat Shop every Sunday of the football season and win every time....
...Are you telling that the $$$$ i win is free and clear, and the only guilty party is the one profiting from bankrolling the ring?
If not, then
who cares if the act of making the wager is legal?

I believe that is correct, yes. Placing the bet (and collecting your winnings) is not illegal. Bookmaking is. Even Gretzky's wife is not guilty of any crime. Only Tocchet, that cop from NJ, and the third financier are.

I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to say here.
No one
should care because
placing a wager is
not illegal. So again, what the story here is:
(a) Tocchet is a moron
(b) Janet Gretzky did nothing wrong
© Wayne Gretzky tried to keep Janet's name out of the media knowing it would become what it became
End of story.
Someone on the Fan in Calgary made a great point yesterday - pretty convenient of them to label the investigation "Operation Slap Shot" rather than "Operation Crooked Cop". Seems to me whoever is behind this whole thing is trying way too hard to get their name in the news.

"In the present global climate we live in, these changes are necessary measures that support providing fans with a great environment," Kamath said.

Cfer - i didn't want "the story". i just wanted you to answer the
first question i posed to the best of your knowledge and experience...the second question (the one you answered) was rhetorical. I'm just curious about this issue for my own knowledge outside of this story....
So i make a bunch of bets (legal), win a bunch of money (also legal, according to fingernailsonhull - thanks for your help btw FOH), through a bookie (who is operating an illegal business). How am i to legally account for those winnings?
If fail to report those profits, i am committing tax fraud. If i report the profit as income other than gambling winnings, i am committing tax fraud. If I report them as gambling winnings but lie about where i gambled and won, i am committing tax fraud. If i report them exactly as they are - winnings from an illegitimate gambling ring - am i legally exempt from prosecution? I better be, because i just threw Johnny Four Fingers under the bus, and i'll soon be dead, which is worse than tax fraud.
Please clarify this for me, someone.

Well, like most Canadians I'm not terribly familiar with US tax law. But my good friend Google led me to this:
Your tax liability depends upon the jurisdiction in which you reside.

That was my guess too, cfern. I got to thinking about that after I posted it and wondered how collecting your winnings could be legal without claiming it as income. I guess it varies from state to state in the US.
