Well, what can I say about the setlist for the Club Bijou show in Toledo? The answer is ‘nothing good’. Of the 21 songs comprising the setlist, 13 were played at the Cleveland show in September. That leaves 8 ‘different’ songs....out of a pool of 80-odd songs which could be played as an alterntive. Four of these 8 were songs I've seen performed over fifteen times. So basically, I shelled out $40 plus the time and expense of a 400-mile round-trip only to see Makeshift, Josephine, Everywhere, and the suddenly ‘rare’ Greasy Jungle. Weak.

Look at all the cookie-cutter selections played with broken-record redundancy: Poets, ABAC, Giftshop, Courage, Bobcaygeon, Meridian, M@W, NOIS, Fireworks, Springtime. The show would've been 100% better if they exchanged just five of these ten songs with something off the beaten path, like something from...I dunno...maybe..ROAD APPLES??? For the record, that's 2 Ohio shows, 0 RA cuts. Why this band ignores its best work is beyond me.....
So thanks for mixing it up, boys! I guess TTH feel absolutely no obligation to reward devout patronage with just a little variety. Given that reality, I think I'll discontinue said patronage, so I can save up for that kick-ass Greatest Hits CD coming out soon! *Yay*!!!

I post this in response to the Cinci guy. When the next tour happens you will never see songs like "Summer" and "Makeshift" and many others from IBE. You should be happy that you caught them. I will probably never see "Bastard", "Sharks", or "Tiger the lion" again but I saw them 7 or 8 times on that tour. That is why you go to muliple shows on a tour, you get that tours songs and you may never see them again. Cherish them while you can. I would love to see "Penquin" again and stuff from Road Apples but you have to take what you get a roll with it. There is no better place to be for two hours than a Hip show.

Phil - I totally get what you're saying. And I agree, to an extent. I am 100% fine with them playing a high percentage of the 'new' album every show. In fact, I would even be cool with them playing every song off the new album every show of the tour. Hell, I'd welcome it, and would expect any enthusiast of any band to say the same.
But it's the other ten songs I'm really concerned with here. Let's take your mention of Sharks, for example. I love that cut - alot- and aside from any personal reasons why, I think I can objectively say that the song itself encapsulates many of the characteristics which make The Hip 'great'. Performed 'live' , its strengths are almost doubled.
So why the hell not throw it into the set, along with a sampling of so many other fine and representative selections from the catalogue? The 'staples' I mentioned in earlier posts have become so much of a fixture that I must admit: when they roll out something like Courage for the umpteenth time, I can't help wishing that they would just have played So Hard Done By or Emporer Penquin or Thugs or Membership or Cordelia or Stay or any number of things instead of.........Courage............*uuuuhgain*

I understand now what you were saying. I just expend a lot of energy at each show so sometimes I catch my breath during Courage. I just know how much Gord likes that song and he is so great during it I do not mind hearing it at each show. Since I am from Buffalo a show is not a show unless we hear Meridian. I know that we could get along when you mentioned all the smae songs that i like too. (penquin,stay,sharks)
I hope to see the band again on new years and if I do I will mention your concerns.

After each tour they add one, two, or even three staples to their live show. I've seen the Hip 7 times (baby numbers compared to most of you), each time I've heard NOIS, ABAC, and Grace, Too... each time I've been impressed. I often go to these shows with a few relatively un-knowledgeable fans, at Bluesfest I mustered up 9 people to go with me, most of which couldn't differentiate Three Pistols from Something On. As the catalogue increases so will the number one hits... this opinion has been posted before, probably a dozen times in this thread, but its nieve to think they'll pull out their 'best of the unplayed' setlist when:
A) Half the stadium is there to hear their hits
B) They're almost obligated to play 80% of their new album
C) Radio hits bring the cash
D) ... and this is theoretical, but I'm sure Universal Canada has something to say about what they play...
E) How can the band members possibly be expected to remember 119. or say even half, 60 songs in their entirity? Jonny could do it, Gord Downie could do it, but Bobby and Paul? It's tough...
If after each album their live show would increase in duration we would see these elusive tracks, but they don't... I think they're far from that bluesy-rock band from the mid '90s, with the extended jams and the open setlist... they really have become a show tour.... I'm not going to complain, but of course everyone else is welcome...

Don't know if I agree with point E. Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Rush, the Stones, etc etc etc don't have trouble remembering a couple HUNDRED songs from their catalogue. If they can dredge up MONTREAL, the band can damn sure give me Bring It All Back or Opiated.

As probably the biggest Rush fan here, I can chime in to say they cannot remember a good chunk of their catalog. Heck, on the 30th anni. tour, they brought back Between The Wheels, which hasn't been played in 20 years (since the GUP tour)! Ged mentioned how they 'forgot' what a great song it is.
