I've got a new one off a bootleg I just got...2002-07-28 Somerville Theatre. During Daredevil the crowd gets a chant going on the OFF-BEAT during Daredevil. You almost never hear in-song chants, but here they're yelling "HIP!" between beats!
The effect of Johnny's drumming mixed with this is almost a minute of pulse-pounding bangHIP!bangHIP!bangHIP!bangHIP! filling up the background...gotta love those Boston fans!

yes, groovless, i love that recording from somerville, that hip chant during daredevil hit me the first time i heard it. killer!!
orpheum theater 98 is also cool during the break in courage, the boston crowd keeps it going with clapping. there are two recordings of that one (matt and mikes) Mikes was taped from front of balcony and picks up the whole theater clapping nicely. matts was taped from in front of the pa stack up front. diff sound on each.

btw, i like when gord sings "hurry" in lake fever.
and from the new disc, i like the first break in copenhagen after "anywhere, anywhere" where the high notes on the guitar follow the riff... sweetness.

Love all the lyrics to Inch an Hour, but the third verse is amazing.

The third chord in "Tiger The Lion" gives me the goosebumps. I couldn't tell you why.

I love the way the Dark Canuck changes mid song just like you are at a drive-in movie. The first part is Jaws and the second is the Dark Canuck. "It's jaws and the dark canuck " "Who's for the dark canuck" " Everyone hands up ! " " Did I relinklish enough " " It's still dark enoughhhh" . This might have been my favorite live song when they played in Chicago and I was the only one who new the words. Awesome Baby !!! Awesome !!

You're right about that one...it's the musical equivalent of onomatopaeia...I don't know if there's a term for it...but a song about a double feature that is in two different halves talking about the experience of each...genius of songcrafting.

So many Hip songs have memorable openings that grab you on the first listen like Silver Jet, Vapour Trails, Vaccination Scar, and 700ft.

It's not from a Hip song, it's from a GD solo song, but I am always taken my the line "If not here, where do we belong?" Whether you interpret it as an individual or a member of an entire society, it's a great bit of existentialist/humanist food for thought.

The Hip can indeed be an emotionally charged band.
The best is on Nautical Disaster, just after "as those fingernails scratching on my hull", great line and harmony there, then Johnny's flam, the crash on beat one and into the fantastic guitar outro. Gets me everytime.

Frig, how could I have forgotten the most gripping of the Hip's moments? On Locked when Gordie is just screaming "LET ME OUT!!!!" and then Robbie launches into the grinding guitar solo. That's just amazing.

I got a couple that no one has mentioned yet although there were many that also get me ('that night in Toronto', the ones from 'leave') but personally these are my pics.
1. M@W - Opening chords to 'M@W' - I think cause I saw them so many times that tour and since we had to hear it over and over at the video shoot
2. Grace - 'He said i'm Tragically Hip' - nothing starts a show or a boot off like that line...kills me every time although now i'm getting picky cause if I don't hear it in a show i'm disappointed which sucks cause all the Hip shows I've seen are awesome regardless!
3. Sherpa - 'and we were Sherpa high...'
