I believe he also wants to contribute more to the overall sound of the band, but like someone else mentioned he is so deep in the mix I'm not sure its worth it. Don't know why this is the case since he is a talented guitar player, anyone that has seen him play solo can attest to that
I LOVED the solo Gord show that I saw. LOVED IT. However, you are the only person I've ever heard call Gord a talented guitar player. He's pretty bad, man. Let's call a spade a spade. Gord is a legend. He's one of Canada's finest, but his guitar playing is what it is.
Well as always to each their own, and I agree with you from a technical ability perspective (tapping, pull offs, hammer-ons, bending, etc. you know all the EVH\Satriani stuff). However, I'm pretty sure his solo material is is composed mostly on his own, and likely almost entirely on guitar. So from a melodic, rhythmic, natural harmonics and strumming perspective I would characterize him as a talented guitar player.

I agree with Direwolf74, Gord may just be bored with the songs. I can relate...and for heavens sake put some different songs on the setlist!!

it's go pearl jam setlist styles or be boring forever unfortunately, they just played a song tonight that has only been played twice in forever!!! get it together and give us a realistic setlists and amazing back to back shows

I checked out on albums around WATS, wasn't feeling it but still went to live shows. "An Evening With" shows on that tour still insured a few gems per show. Plan A to me, one if their weaker efforts just didn't hit any note with me. I've seen the band 25+ times, in every setting possible. Greatest Hits sets are no fun for me anymore. This is the first tour I haven't seen them at all and I don't feel like I missed anything. I always compare any band at this stage in their career to Wilco, a band that I feel is still making relative music on records and putting on fantastic live shows. The Hip are barely treading water as of late and are obviously in need of a massive change in direction. Not sure where they go from here though. I'd like to see them do some Full Album shows. That would be pretty cool, and might help them rediscover whatever it is that is lacking lately. I'd hate to see them become a novelty act... But their set lists are doing nothing to help. I'm rooting for them, always will. But their best years are probably behind them and we as fans find it tough to deal with that.

I was thinking about the lack of setlist variation after the news re: Paul's hearing came out recently. Could that have been a reason for the change, since there could be restrictions on what he can/can't do in terms of hearing different songs. But he said the incident happened in late 2011 (I think), which was after the rot set in....I know I saw them in the summer of 2011 during their run of festivals and it was already a pretty standard set.
Short answer, I doubt it, but who knows anymore?

here's an example from Metallica
While gearing up to play their coldest show ever when they head to Antarctica next month, Metallica is already looking ahead to warmer days. Next summer, the band will embark on their Metallica by Request tour, in which ticket purchasers will get to vote on the set list. Fans will get to choose 17 of the nearly 140 songs from the band’s 30-plus-year existence, but the metal legends will pick one of their own: a brand, spanking new one. The band is indeed working on a new album and will use this tour to test its legs.
The tour currently includes only three shows in Germany, including Rock Am Ring and Rock Im Park, with more dates forthcoming. ”We are once again psyched to break free of the four walls in the studio to get energized by our devoted European friends for a couple of weeks next May and June,” Lars Ulrich said in a press statement. “On top of that, the fact that all our nutty fans will pick the songs we play should be some next level fun and take a big load off my shoulders as the guy who usually writes the set list!”
Tickets for all shows (festivals included) can be purchased here, and you can watch the results of the voting process unfold at Metallica’s website. To see which tracks our own Jon Hadusek would indubitably vote for, check out his recent list of Metallica’s top 10 songs. See his number “One” choice beneath the tour dates.
Metallica by Request 2014 Tour Dates:
06/04 – Hamburg, DE @ Imtech Arena, Sonisphere
06/05-08 - Nürburgring , DE @ Rock Am Ring
06/06-09 - Nürburg, DE @ Rock Im Park

The Darkest Canuck - 11-27-2013
that is pretty sweet.
i like the idea of doing the full album sets. maybe start with the the ep as the opening set on a 30th anniversary tour, followed by a mix set, and short encore set. i think after 20+ years of not playing the ep at all, it is long overdue, and then they could go back to not playing it ever again, or be more confident in playing songs from it going forward, after not doing them for so long.
realistically, i don't expect them to unearth those songs, but they could do the same thing for the rest of the albums up to i'd say phantom power, that would keep them busy, and keep fans happy presumably, for the next 15 years, and that's without even factoring in any new material or side projects. they could just as easily start in 2014 for the 25th anniversary of UTH. Idon't really expect that either though, i think they will be due for an "off-year" again after NFPA.

Here's the thing: if the Hip did this, we'd still get Greatest Hits setlists because that's what 90% of the audience is there to see.

they should just let me write their setlists. i am officially offering my services for free. i'll keep them to the length and specifications that they give me, and try to work with that and keep them as fresh as possible.

He's right. Remember, I think we're the exception, not the rule. WE want to hear Emperor Penguin, Another Midnight and the Completeists (well I do anyways). I don't think the majority of fans would care for the rarities.

Yup, and that's why there's a strong likelihood that the Hip will continue to play greatest hits setlists for the remainder of their career...at least in this country. From everything I heard and read about the 2012 U.S. tour, they were mixing it up nicely down there and actually dusted off some of the deep album cuts. If I ever spend money to see these guys live again, it definitely won't be in Canada.

Some of it seems kind of counter-intuitive...
Wouldn't the deep cuts go over better in a Canadian environment where people actually know songs like Thugs, Summer's Killing Us, The Last Recluse etc.?

It is totally counter-intuitive. It's one thing at a festival, but quite another when you have the absurd ticket prices of the last tour. You have to be a *fan* to pay those prices, and I'd bet the majority of the crowd would be just as happy to hear 'the wherewithal' as 'in view'. To name but one example.
I'd almost expect the inverse, where in the US/europe, I'd reckon a not-small percentage of the crowd is Canadian ex-pats, many of whom might only know/remember the hits.
