PVRed most of their Austin City Limits episode from last year-holy shit it's great. I think they are probably the greatest live band going right now.

I loved the show so much I converted it to MP3 and it lives on my ipod. The mix isn't the usual type of PJ, but Mike's guitar is so raw and his solos are so awesome. Great show!!!

Probably? Nothing "Probable" about it. Their live show has firmly cemented their legacy as one of the greats. Their energy onstage comes from an intangible place that somehow, every night, turns into something palpable. Bottle that shit up and sell it on the mass market and you'd have a society that could do an immense world of good, day in and day out.
I was 14 the first time I saw them live. Molson Park in Barrie; the ol' dustbowl. On a beautiful August night, me and my 125 pound frame, with glasses too big for my zit-speckled face and a naive sense of how tame rock and roll should be worked my way to the front of the crowd. I was clutching the show's poster, determined not to crumple it at all. My buddy, smaller than I was, stood beside me, anxious as a freshman at our first college party. We kept our footing through Cheap Trick and thought it'd be smooth sailing.
Then, as serendipitious as only PJ can do, the band came onstage as the sun set. From the opening notes of Corduroy, I began getting tossed around like a rag doll. My poster stayed close to me, though I sacrificed my body in the process. For the first five raging numbers, I barely saw the stage, instead spending most of my time with mouth full of dirt and my limbs being treated like drumsticks. My eyes began to well up during "Animal." Surely, this wasn't how my first rock and roll gig was supposed to roll? I wanted nothing more than to be back at home, listening to No Code on my headphones.
And then, a thick hand grabbed my backpack and pulled me into the air. I turned around, and there was a face, covered in just as much dirt. "Are you alright?" he yelled? I coughed up some dirt. "We gotta get you out of here."
He pulled me a good thirty rows back and set me up dead center, with a perfect view of the band. My rock and roll guardian angel. He seemed possessed, but still worked like this was something he did everyday.
"Now," he said, "Enjoy the show."
With that, dude disappeared. I couldn't thank him. I still had my poster. I looked down and my left kneecap was bleeding profusely. I watched the band work an eerie calm over the crowd, pulling them through a series of highs and lows that rivaled any symphony created by Bach, Beethoven or any of those old, dead bastards. As Gord has said, "For a show to be great, something has to happen." Not only did I not get to thank that dude, but I didn't say another word for the rest of the show. It was life-changing and life-affirming all the same. The poster hangs above my wall and I still have a nasty scar on my knee.
Flash forward nearly ten years to MSG. It was summertime, again. I'd travelled from Istanbul to NYC just for the gig. After too many pints beforehand, I had to leave and go for a piss. (Grounds for treason, I know, but just trying arguing with a man when nature calls)
I stood in the urinal while Rearviewmirror raged in the background. And it happened, as I'd heard it might. I felt the ground beneath me shake a little. It scared the shit out of me, again. And as the song's fierce crescendo kicked in, the ground beneath me shook so much that I couldn't control my piss and I dribbled onto my scarred knee, bare in my torn jean shorts. I laughed to myself and knew that something special had happened, again. It always does with the Jam.

I don't really see the Springsteen comparison with this album. Pearl Jam > Springsteen anyway. This album is pretty darn fine.

I've seen them twice here in Calgary, and was blown away both times, although the outdoor experience at Virginfest trumped the Dome easily, despite the fact it was the shittiest most disorganised lineup fest I've been to. Was an amazing night, and a guy I went with grabbed one of Matt's drumsticks tossed into the crowd.

I was at Virgin Fest as well. I remember the long, painful walk up the hill after the show to get back to my car. Man, that was brutal. By the time I got to the top I was coughing & wheezing and sweating like a whore in church, and I couldn't feel my legs. If anything, it showed me just how out of shape I was. But yea, what a dumb spot to hold a concert. I thought the Fort Calgary location the year before was much better. Complaints aside though, Pearl Jam's show that night was one of the greatest performances I've ever seen from any band. 2 rock-solid hours of pure energy and positive vibes. Sadly I've only seen them 3 times live, and I'd step over my own mother to see them again in the near future. What a great band.
