Gomez was a brutal signing, he's been overrated his whole career, and to me that signing just sums up perfectly Gainey's mismanagement of this team. Not only is Gomez the most overpaid player in the entire league, Gainey gave up the team's number one prospect in Ryan McDonough to get him.

As for the Laraque thing, I think it just shows the general lack of class Gainey has. He called him to tell him instead of meeting face to face, he did it right after Haiti disaster and Gainey said they lacked confidence in him. Laraque is the exact same player today as he was when the Habs first picked him up. I never really saw a need for him, or thought he brought anything to the team, but Gainey could have handled this in a much better way. Nothing new for him though, he fired the whole Hamilton Bulldogs staff over the phone last year. This better be Gainey's last season as GM.

Gomez wasnt signed, (not by Gainey, by Sather).. not too nitpick, he was traded for Higgins, McDonaugh and a pick for Gomez and Pyatt and maybe a pick..i forget.

Not sure I agree about McDonaugh, apparently he wasnt progressing as well as anticipated. Time will tell.

Gainey needed a centre badly and since he couldnt wrap up the Lecavalier deal, he "settled" on Gomez, cause he could be had relatively cheap without messing up the current roster and to entice Gionta and probably Cammalleri.

Not his best move but he had to do something. I would sooner they had kept Koivu and tried to fill some roster holes with FA's until Kovalchuk hit UFA status and threw the cash at him, not a guaranteed plan, but it would at least given us some cap room, the worst part about the Gomez move is the cap hit, brutal. Sather is an idiot (see also Redden).

I agree though, I hope Gainey is gone sooner than later, we need a more pro-active GM with some balls. Gainey's way too passive.

I dont really care about Laraque, the biggest mistake we made with him was signing him to that contract in the first place.

Yeah, I meant to say trade for Gomez, my mistake. I remember when he was the number one ranked unrestricted free agent a few years ago by TSN (I couldn't tell why). McKenzie and Dreger were salivating over him, and I said at the time he was overrated. Then Sather threw a ton of cash at him like you said. He's only had one season with more than 30 goals and 80 points, and other than that season he has never once scored 20 or more goals. And during the lockout season of 04/05 he played for an Alaskan team in the ECHL and wasn't even in the top 5 on his team for goals, he did lead the team in points but just barely over a guy who has been a career minor leaguer. Never saw the appeal in this guy. He's always been fairly good defensively, but a decent defensive centre who doesn't put up points isn't worth 8+ million in the NHL.

not sure how happy you would be with sykora. i had the pleasure of watching him the last 2 years in pittsburgh. he is molasses slow, gets knocked off the puck with a heavy breath, and spends 1/2 his time on the ice worrying about helping the refs make their calls. he is done, trust me on this

idk, i just thought he might be a decent fit in the locker room with the other Czech's, and he couldn't be worse than BGL...

I keep hearing rumors of Halak being traded, I don't think I want that to happen, but I guess it depends on what the return would be.

He's far superior to Price, so losing him and keeping Price would be bad no matter who you got back. It will happen though, and if he doesn't get traded this year there's no way he'll come back and play for Bob Gainey next year, he'll go to the KHL before he comes back for the Habs, and I don't blame him at all.

I was thrilled when i heard that the Rangers had dealt Gomez to the Habs. I like Scott Gomez, he's a good player who can be entertaining to watch. In his time with the Rangers, he was always one of our top 2 or 3 forwards, but he's simply making way too much money for what he provides. Chris Higgins hasn't been able to get things going offensively at all this season & i can't see him being back next year seeing that he's a UFA, and Ryan McDonaugh is just an average prospect. Without trading Gomez though, the Rangers wouldn't of been able to sign Marian Gaborik on July 1st.

Speaking of bad contracts, that 6 year $39 million pact Sather gave Wade Redden is looking worse & worse each passing game. Something has to be done after this season, but i'm not sure what options they have. I'd imagine trading him would be next to impossible. They could let him play out the remaining 4 years in the minors, but that's an awful lot of money to pay an american leaguer. Going the buy-out route though, i read somewhere that they'd still be on the hook for something like a $2 million cap hit for the next 8 seasons.
Redden's been a healthy scratch numerous times this season, he plays the least out of the Rangers top 6 defensemen, and he was benched yet again tonight, he spent the last 38 minutes of the game sitting on the bench.

Another horrible deal of Sathers was the one he gave Ales Kotalik last summer. Under Tortorella, Kotalik has basically been used as a powerplay specialist. When he's in the line-up, he's usually paired with Del Zotto on the points of the 1st PP unit, but then at even strength more often than not he's on the 3rd or 4th lines. Sather signed Kotalik last July, it was a 2 year for i think $8 million. I like Sather, but he's made some brutal moves since coming over to the Rangers. He'll give Kotalik a 2 year deal, yet a year ealier wouldn't give Jaromir Jagr his 2 year/10mil.

This should free up some cap space for the Flames to go after Kovalchuk...

I don't mind this move from a Leafs perspective. I don't care what anyways says about Phaneuf, and i realize he hasn't been very good for the last year+, but he's still only 23 years old & there's definitely potential there. I saw Sjostrom play last year as a Ranger, and he'll basically cancel out Jamal Myers. As for the prospect included, i don't know anything about him.
I honestly don't think the Leafs gave up much in either Hagman or Stajan, they are just average 2nd/3rd line types who benfitted from playing on a weak Leafs team. Ian White is the only guy in the deal i'd be disappointed to see go, but still if i was a Leafs fan i'd be happy with the trade.
As for the Flames, i don't mind the move either. They still have the Bouwmeester/Regehr tandem, and the emergence of Giordano this year made Phaneuf & his $6.5 cap hit expendanble. Add to those 3 the likes of Sarich, Johnson, Pardy, and now White...defense is still a strong suit.

I think the Leafs won both deals really, they got the best players by far, although they did take back a lot of $$. Having said that Giguere's numbers are horrid for his salary, he needs to bounce back big time, if he does the Leafs are definitely a better team now having shed such dead weight players. On the flip side having $25 million tied up in defenceman is going to make it hard to land top forwards, this team has no real centreman or forward depth, thats going to hurt them if they cant make another deal or sign someone decent next year. I think Burke should sacrifice Kaberle or Schenn to get a top forward..even though he said he never will.

I'll give Burke credit though, he's definitely not afraid to make changes, I wish our GM had some balls.
