grimes Wrote:^ whether he won the fight or not doesn't matter, the point is he's willing to stand up for his teammates when necessary, which isn't something you can say about every superstar. This article sums it up nicely.
I read that article already, and the guy who wrote it is obviously a Crosby lover, which is fine. But the whole point of this being somehow newsworthy or momentus is way overblown.
from the article:
"But Crosby thought it was a borderline hit, and it wasn't exactly against Tyler Kennedy. So it was a captain doing what captains are supposed to do."
Well duh!!!
Players stick up for teammates every game, thats hockey. So what? Good for him for standing up for a mate but it still doesnt make him more special.
from the article:
"Either Crosby's the latest in a series of unfortunate scraps after clean hits that has marred the season, or his dropping the gloves at that moment in a tie game was a laudable act of leadership from a young captain"
I'd say its more the former than the latter, the hit was clean (albeit dangerous), it didnt even warrant a fight imo, Crosby would have been better served in this situation keeping himself in the game at that late stage with his team on a PP. Either way I'd hardly call it a "laudable act of leadership" thats stretching it, he did what a captain should do or a teammate should do, its part of hockey. He has a way to go before he can be named with the Iginla's, Yzerman's and Messier's of leadership fame.

Overblown? Are you kidding? I saw it during the highlights of the game on Sunday, and then in this one article - that's all. It's not like they're giving him a medal for it or anything. It's no different from the coverage Iggy or Lecavalier or any other top line player gets when he occasionally drops the gloves.

I'll ignore Messier there because he's the most overrated "leader" of all time. As for Yzerman or Iggy, of course Crosby isn't in that class yet - it's only his fourth season. But if you compare him to where those guys were at this point in their career, then absolutely he's right up there.

Im not saying the coverage was overblown, Im saying the reaction is being overblown like I said: "the whole point of this being somehow newsworthy". From what IVE seen on the sports channels and read on the internet about it, the reaction is definitely being overblown, if you dont think so thats fine.
It didnt stop you from using it to champion Crosby's prowess of being a leader and a hero to his team, to persuade the "Crosby haters" out there that he's not a whiny bitch who cant play tough..correct me if Im wrong, and Im not sure how many of those people there are but again..keep trying.

Isnt that basically what I just said? As for where he is career wise if you talking about points he's probably better than both of them, thats a guess but the kid is putting up big numbers. Great, good for him. Im talking leadership and respect, he hasnt hit the pedigree..yet. And by using this little act of leadership as a rally cry to all the doubters and haters, and to try and elevate his status as a leader and a tough guy is weak, if that was the intent.

Ovechkin wouldn't do it, because he's a candy ass, Crosby is not, end of discussion. He wasn't trying to be a "tough guy", he knows that's not his job, but he did it anyway, because it was the right thing to do, andhe understands what hockey is all about, and more importantly, what being a captain is all about.
Also, Iggy ain't won shit yet, so please stop sucking his dick...he made it exactly as far as Crosby did, and close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

Oh good the voice of reason is here, thanks for setting me straight. Not sure how mentioning someone's name in a conversation means your "sucking his dick" but I guess you would know more about that than I would.
You obviously missed the whole point I was trying to make in the first place, I never said Ovechkin would do it and never said Crosby was a candy ass, I actually applauded him for doing it more than once. And basically made the same points you did, maybe try reading the actual posts next time instead of just pulling shit out of the air and using it to go off like you usually do.

I'm talking about the total package, not just points. We all now regard Yzerman as being one of the greatest leaders, but don't forget there were years and years of playoff failures in Detriot and major doubts about his leadership until they finally won the cup in '97.
As for the fight, it is one example of his leadership, that's all. If, rather than fighting he had started chirping at Ballard but wouldn't drop the gloves, or had harrassed the refs about what he thought was a poor call, then I would agree with the "whiny bitch" argument. But instead, without hesitation he challenged Ballard to stick up for his teammate. Sure, players do that all the time - but most of them are 3rd of 4th liners. It's not something that is expected from an elite offensive player.

The point is, you're always raggin' on the kid, and putting him down, and it's annoying.

The Darkest Canuck Wrote:The point is, you're always raggin' on the kid, and putting him down, and it's annoying.
Yeah cause thats why I said this in my first post...
"Just for the record I like Crosby the kid has tons of hockey sense and talent, Id take him on my team in a heartbeat."
And yes I have dumped on him in the past but..
If I called him out for any of his antics in the past Im sure they were warranted cause he has made some mistakes. Otherwise he's an awesome player and I like his game, sometimes he does or says things I dont like and if he does Im not afraid to call him out, like I would any player.
And yes isnt it so awful when people put others down and 'rag' on them. Cause you would never do that or have done that here have you? Yes your such a shining example of courtesy and decorum to us all.
And yes I know I can be a jerk sometimes, but check the context of my rants compared to yours and its not even close. And for the most part my jerkyness (is that even a word?) is meant in jest and to get laughs, and alot of the people here know where Im coming from. Your just despicable and always will be and you know it.
And Im absolutely sick of arguing with you on here about anything, its pointless and a complete waste of time and space (kind of like you)..so Im just going to stick with hockey.
starting............now.

HUGE night of hockey about to get underway! Rangers & Habs square off. Florida plays, Nashville & St.Louis both play, Calgary faces Vancouver, etc etc.
The Rangers need the two points tonight, and it's time for guys like Chris Drury & Markus Naslund to step up. I can't believe it's come down to the final week considering the comfortable position the Rangers had played themselves into at mid-season.
It's a huge night for me in hockey pool too. I'm in 1st place in one of my pools, but only by 1 point. We just had to pick any 12 players in the entire league, and 10 of our 12 guys are the same. The only 2 different...I have Heatley & Backstrom, he has Alfredsson & St.Louis. All 4 play tonight. 1st place is $500, 2nd place $0
My other pool, i'm tied for 3rd (1st,2nd,3rd get $$) & we both have 13 guys playing tonight.
David Backes has 31 goals?? I had no idea he had anywhere near that many. I'm rooting for the Blues to get the 8th spot in the West.
Re: NHL -
Lizard King - 04-07-2009
well the Rangers deserved that one, when you play like that in your own end you deserve to lose, horrible turnovers killed us.
the only bright spot in that game was when Komisarek nailed Avery. This team kills me, cripes two d-men go down and no-one can even elevate their game in a playoff push, pathetic, this team has no heart or will to win its sickening. I hope they dismantle this sad sack in the summer, i hate players who dont care and dont give their all for the team, makes me want to burn my jersey.
Komisarek had a rough year, im sure the injuries held him back, he wasnt the same guy after that shoulder problem, but ill give him a free pass cause i like the way he plays and he'd be hard to replace, and i think tanguay deserves another shot (albeit at a lesser salary), the rest can walk the plank.
Re: NHL -
ryan93 - 04-07-2009
Very strong effort by the Rangers tonight, they were by far the more desperate team...the magic number is down to 2 points. I said before the game that Chris Drury had to step up tonight, and he came through in a big way with 2 goals. Markus Naslund played pretty good as well, he had a really nice assist on Drury's 2nd goal. I thought Ryan Callahan had another excellent game, he's been the most consistent forward all season long. He's really stepped up offensively & has taken his game to another level since John Tortorella took over. He's probably been the best forward since the coaching change. And Henrik Lundqvist had another good game, he's the only reason the Rangers are in a position to clinch a playoff spot.
And finally, the Nik Antropov trade has turned out better than i ever could of expected. He's been a perfect fit in New York so far. I was never a fan of his, but i've really liked what's he's brought to the table so far.
You gotta love this time of year, when else would you ever have 18,200 people @ MSG erupting into cheers because of a Flyers win!
Off to watch some more hockey, switch back & forth between the Flames/Canucks, Blues, and Preds games
Re: NHL -
Lizard King - 04-07-2009
And if Gainey has any brains he'll do everything he can to shore up our defence corps, Markov and Komisarek are keepers, I wouldnt mind Hamrlik so much if he wasnt so overpaid, at half the price he'd be a decent 4th or 5th guy, but Id rather his spot go to someone better. Schneider will probably retire Im guessing, although I wouldnt put it past Gainey to sign him for one more year if he's willing to play, just look at the Brisebois fiasco..I could puke. I hope I never have to see him play hockey again I cant take it anymore. As for the rest Boullion can go, he's got some grit but his spot could be given to somone better also, Gorges has turned out to be a decent player, not great not terrible somewhere inbetween. Surely O'Byrne wont be getting a place on the team he was horrid this year, he's not ready for the big time at all, shame too the guy is huge.
We have PK Subban, Ryan McDonaugh, Yannick Weber and that Russian kid who cant come over..Alexi Yemelin, who's supposed to be pretty decent if you believe some of the scouting reports. Have to figure at least one of these guys will get a shot next year, I hope someone can step it up and play a role.
I doubt Bouwmeester would play in Montreal, I heard he wants to play out West (Edm or Cal) but who knows when the money starts flowing he could end up anywhere, Id love to have him. What we really need is someone stable who has a presence and is good in his own end, we give up waaaaaaay too many shots as a team that has to change, and too many bad plays in our own end have killed us a number of times this season. Kaberle is good but Burke wants a ransom for him and I hate making trades with rivals especially those losers. Not sure who else is in the FA pool this summer so a trade is probably in order, I can see some big moves at the draft this year. Lecavalier anyone? I still think Kovalchuk is the big fish to be had, that guy can score and is a gamebreaker, he's just what we need up front, cause no-one else seems to want to score goals.
Markov - stays
Komisarek - re-signs/stays
Gorges - stays
Hamrlik - unfortunately stays, unless he gets bought out (cross fingers)
Schneider - i have a bad feeling Gainey wants to bring him back, please no, only if he's dirt cheap and has a limited role
dont settle Bob I hate when you settle!!
that leaves one spot open, i hope this isnt the case or this team is f****d for next season too.
