Re: NHL - tigerthelion - 03-02-2009

So, just went to the Canucks website just for the hell of it. There is a thread about Don Cherry's recent comments on some radio show; he's talking about Ovechkin among other things, and there is a guy who says:

"Cause the game would be better off without ovechkin in it and that would be hockey justice. Like cherry says, someone needs to clean his clock one day for his antics."

"Cherry is 100% right about ovechkin! God I cannot stand ovechkin and his arrogant antics and I hope someone bertuzzi's him one day."

"He's showing up opponents and taunting them and showing them no respect. All he cares about is scoring goals and going crazy. A me first selfish guy. You can't hang on the rim or taunt in the nba or have extravagant celebrations in the nfl after touchdowns. His personality leaves a lot to be desired as well. Ovechkin is bad for the game."

Re: NHL - Lizard King - 03-02-2009

Name me one team that wouldnt want Ovechkin? So the guy gets excited and likes to celebrate his goals, if the guy scores 60 goals for my team he can do backflips for all I care. He's a dynamic player who makes defenceman look bad Im sure he's probably pissing alot of other players off but thats how he plays the game. Some of his stuff probably is a little over the top but I think Cherry forgot to take his pills on saturday when he tore him down, he was off his head that night. Look in the mirror Cherry, you irrelevant windbag.

If I was his coach I might tell him to tone it down a bit, but Im sure Boudreau loves it, that kind of enthusiasm can be infectous and fire the team up and the fans, its seems to be working wonders for them this season. And he lets not become like the NoFunLeague (NFL) here. I dont think thats the way to go, breaking his neck definitely isnt the answer.

Personally, I wouldn't tell him to change anything. His teammates all love him, the entire city he plays in loves him, he is actually the opposite of a selfish player, he is top 10 in hits, he crashes, he bangs. By all rights, Don Cherry should LOVE THIS GUY. But, like usual, Grapes has a stick up his ass. I don't see him doing ANYTHING wrong. He doesn't have a reputation of being a whining b*tch like Crosby, for instance. I guess being the best player in the world and playing with passion are a bad combo these days to some folks. :? It's funny because Russians had always been called "robots who showed no passion and no desire to win" and now you get a player like Ovechkin who is the complete opposite of that (and wants to win as much as ANY CANADIAN PLAYER ALIVE) and Cherry still bashes him. Yep, keep showing manlove for Steve Sullivan every week, Grapes, and tear down the best thing the NHL has going for it (Ovie). Real bright. Confusedcratch:

Re: NHL - Lizard King - 03-03-2009

Cherry's lost his marbles, the guy isnt happy unless he's having a go at someone just to stroke his ego and boost tv ratings. Just so he can hold the CBC over the coals when he negotiates his salary. Its all an act and a waste of air time, Id rather hear some real hockey talk between periods, they need to change the format and make it more engaging Im sick of Cherry. And please No more of these elliott freidman gasping for air interviews in the hallway, you know these ones they usually go like this..

(put cbc towel over players shoulder)

Elliott: so whats it going to take to come back and win this game in the third period?

Player: Gee i dont know, how bout we score some goals and not give any up...gasp, gasp...stick to our game keep it simple, back to basics, get the puck out of our end..gasp, gasp.. get more shots on goal, stay in the game, you know like hockey. (wipe sweat off face) gasp...gasp...

Elliott: Thanks best of luck in the third period.

Player: Thanks whoever you are..gasp..gasp

Elliott: Back to you Ron.

As for Crosby who is he to call a guy out for antics, he's been nothing but a whiny bitch since he broke into the league. Get a pair of balls Crosby, with your skill set you should be dominating games. Try playing more like Iginla the guy is a warrior and leader, a perfect example of what a hockey player should be. Stop whining play hockey. Living in Mario's house hasnt done a thing for this kid.

Sutter isn't fuckin' around. Matthew Lombardi is gone. Olli Jokinen and defenceman Jordan Leopold are now Flames. I like these upgrades.

I caught some of the analysis (and I use that term loosely) of the Jokinen trade on TSN, and Matthew Barnaby had this insightful gem to offer:

"he'll either help the Flames, or he won't."

In other news, I hear it's going to snow today. Or it isn't.

Re: NHL - ryan93 - 03-04-2009

So the Rangers made a pair of moves...Derek Morris, Nik Antropov, Sean Avery in...Dmitri Kalinen, Petr Prucha, Nigel Dawes out. I used to like Morris, but he hasn't been very good the last couple of years. I've never really been a Antropov fan, but i dunno, the Rangers are small up front, and hopefully he'll be able to chip in with a few goals, i can't see him having a very big impact though.
They didn't have to give up much to get Antropov, but Morris...i really liked Prucha. He was the hardest working player on the team most nights, for a guy his size, Prucha is fearless on the ice. Tom Renney was never a fan of his, even in his rookie season when seemingly everything he put on net would go in, Renney still would only give him 3rd/4th line minutes, rarely any PP time, etc. The past couple years he was pretty much the 13th forward, but it looked like Tortorella was going to give him a shot. Nigel Dawes brings lots of speed, and he's a creative player with some offensive upside, but he's another small body and has been inconsistent thus far. As for Dmitri Kalinen, good riddance, he's a bum.

I was hoping to maybe see a couple more bigger names move...Jay Bouwmeester, Chris Pronger, Martin St.Louis, etc...but at least there were quite a few late deals later in the day.

Re: NHL - Lizard King - 03-04-2009

I cant believe Bob hasnt made a move yet today, he must have bigger ideas for the draft and the summer.

I guess Vinny was just a pipe dream, I figured as much. I wouldnt give half the team away for anyone, except maybe Ovechkin.

Re: NHL - ryan93 - 03-04-2009

They did some tweaking in recent days...Schneider, Metropolit, Janik...but i thought there was a good chance they'd add a center today. There wasn't a whole lot of quality in play, Olli Jokinen obviously, but after that. Keith Tkachuk was rumored to be available, Michael Nylander (though i'm not sure that'd be a good fit...plus according to TSN he wouldn't waive his no trade), etc.
At the very least i was expecting them to deal Mathieu Dandenault...same goes for Nick Boynton in Florida.

Bob must think that Mathieu Schneider and the recent play of Jaroslav Halak are all that is required for playoff success.... Confusedcratch:

--- perhaps Vinny over the summer?

That's what I've heard.. they're saving cap space for him. I don't think Komisarek and/or Higgins will be back, so that will free up more room. It is dissapointing though, although there was really no one out there that could have helped a whole lot besides Vinny, maybe a guy like Samuel Paullson or something.

The play of Price last night conmfirmed Halak will be the guy for the rest of the season, that should put any notion of a goaltending controversy to rest. Price has zero confidence, and appears to be really nervous and timid in the net. All 5 goals last night were weak goals. He never moves from side to side to make a save, and if a pass goes across the crease and he's not in position he just gives up on the play and watches it go right by him. He appears to be nonchalant all the time during a game. I'd like to see a second effort or at least some effort to make a difficult save. I think thats been his problem sinse he got into the league, he's purely a positional goalie.

Re: NHL - Lizard King - 03-05-2009

Vinny's NTC and new contract kicks in July 1st...so it will have to be summer but I still dont see it happening. TBay will want Markov Im sure and that is too steep, I think Montreal will try and sign Komisarek if not they better throw big bucks at Bouwmeester but I heard he wants to go out west Van, Edm or Cal.

I think Bob is just being realistic about the season, throwing a bunch of prospects and picks at a team just for a rental wasnt worth it, and for this team it made no sense and Bob knows that. I hate the idea of high priced rentals unless your team is absolutely stacked and primed to go for the Cup I dont see the point. Not getting Sundin and the teams downward spiral helped him decide this team wasn't destined for much this season so he did what had to do to fill some holes in the lineup and threw caution to wind. Like I said the summer is when Bob can really do something with this team, if it was up to me I know that next season Kovalchuk will be in the last year of his contract, rather than go through all this deadline day nonsense he should be knocking on Atlanta's door to see what it will take to get him. Its Vinny, J-Bo or Kovalchuk, he needs to land one of these three or this team isnt winning a thing.

I like Halak and we'll see how long he can keep his strong play up. But I feel for Price I cant believe he's fallen this far, he was playing with so much confidence earlier in the season he was named to be an allstar it seemed like it was all going his way, I thought he would persevere and than the floor just fell out on him. The last thing we need is another Theodore.

Re: NHL - The Darkest Canuck - 03-06-2009

Cherry is right, he is always right, and even when he's wrong, he's still right.

Ovechkin is a hotdog, like Jagr. His excessive celebrations are lame, this isn't the NFL, this is hockey, a warrior's sport...at least it used to be.

Sure, take out fighting, make the nets bigger, and let the players dance around like over-exctied little girls every time they score...whoohoo :censored
