The production is definitely bad, and the instrumentation is sometimes frustratingly minimalistic it seems. I think this could have been one of the hip's best if it had just been tweaked a little. I would call this the hip's adult contemporary album.

Bought the vinyl when released, played it 4-5 times. Don't dislike it, just gets passed over for others.
WATS took several listens before I got over the wall-of-sound, so maybe by the end of the decade 8)

At the time of it's release I called it a late-career gem. I still feel that way. Some of the songs are clear throwbacks to their earlier mid-90s sound (At Transformation, Goodnight Attawapiskat, Modern Spirit, Streets Ahead), while at the same time they continued to push their sound forward with songs like We Want to Be It, NFPA, and About this Map. I still find the production really muddy sounding on certain songs. I'm no recording engineer, but Streets Ahead in particular almost sounds like it's clipping throughout the entire track.

So I've been coming around on this album quite a bit recently, lot of good stuff on here for sure.
But how about the live version of Grace Too on the deluxe release!? God damn!

I love that version. Gord's epic 4-minute rant at the beginning is one for the ages.

I like NFPA more now than I ever have. Definitely some questionable sound quality in parts - Streets Ahead is borderline unlistenable for me, but overall I think it's a great album. Current go-to tracks: The Modern Spirit and Take Forever.

I've always enjoyed NFPA, and think there is a lot of great stuff on it. Still wish they would go more in the direction of songs like At Transformation and Goodnight Attawapiskat, but I do really appreciate the softer stuff too. The title track is great, and We Want To Be It may be Gord's finest vocal performance; I love the energy and emotion of that song.

Best version of Grace I've ever heard. Ever. Would be shocked if there is a longer version ever played...
About Streets Ahead, I love it. The bass line must be a hoot to play for Gord as it's so catchy.

"Save us, Calgary!!!" I'm curious, when was this version of Grace was recorded? Seems like Gord was in a Calgary state of mind then. Of course, in Take Forever he sings,
"Whenever a man
Tries to be more like a machine
He breaks down
When I broke down
I always thought I'd go to Calgary"
(Can't ignore the "man as machine" metaphor here either)
Anyway, my favourite versions of Grace Too are the ones that start slow, quiet and subdued...that slow build up of Johnny's drums leading into Gord S's groovy (and iconic) bass line. For me, that slow burn in the first minute of the song makes Gord D's insane screams of "HIM??? HERE??? NOW???? NO!!!" that much more potent at the end.

I was at the show here in Calgary. It was for the Stampede Roundup on July 12, 2012.
I too was at this show - I also had a gig setting up all the stampede decorations on the concert grounds during the day. It was great - during sound check I stood in the middle of the field and listened to Ahead by a Century, just me and the band.
I also had the fore site to hide a bottle of rum under one of the hay bales during the day. worked like a charm, when I showed up for the concert later that night - there was my bottle! Nothing better than some sweet Fluer de Cana and hip on a sweet July night!
fond memories of this concert.
