Perhaps if you want to listen to golden oldies, that's a sign of where you think the Hip are as a band? If you'd rather hear a Road Apples outtake than a new song?
That Egos and Icons has a great moment in it for those who want to hear decade-old outtakes ... unfortunately, they cut out the best part of the interview.
Downie is saying how they run into fans who want them to do the rarities, saying, "you used to play this song, Crack my Spine Like a Whip, you only played it about four times" -- and then they cut him off, going to a performance of the song in question.
I still remember the original interview, because it was one of the sharpest comments I ever saw Downie make. The part they cut off was the best part.
He said, "and I'm thinking, Fuck! Get a life!"
So maybe that's yer answer.

I think you are wrong about where I am with the hip personally...my favorite albums are IBE, IVL and FC...I saw the show at the whisky and loved seeing all of the new material live. Of course we all want to see the 10 or so new songs they are going to play on this tour, I am speaking to the other 10 songs they will play in a setlist.
I really think speaking as to where another person is at with the band is kind of a reckless and disrespectful thing to do because you couldn't be more wrong when it comes to where I am at.

I decided to look back and read the posts you have put up on this topic and I was wondering, while you accuse people of asking and expecting too much, where you get the ego to speak for the band and pontificate on what we should expect and what we deserve.
Who are you to say any of this? I am not naive enough to think I speak for everyone, I am simply offering my opinion, but I definitely would not tell another person in here what they are and aren't entitled to when it comes to this band.
This is a forum for us to present our opinions, and while I feel strongly about my opinion I don't have the ego to tell other people their opinions are wrong and that I know what they do and do not deserve.
I would never dabble in the art of ego driven berating of other members of this group.

Excuse me, but where, precisely, was I berating anyone? Where, precisely, was I claiming to speak for the band? Where did I tell you where you were at with the band?
What I did was ask if the boredom people express with the setlists might reflect where they are with the band. That's up to you to answer for yourself.
And I suggested that you pays your money and you take your chances. That buying tickets doesn't give people any entitlement other than to get through the doors to see the band play. That ain't trying to speak for the band, it's simply pointing out a fact. The only other comment I made that might be "speaking for the band" was, um, the lead singer speaking for himself.
I'm not here to tell you you're "wrong" where there is no right or wrong. I don't actually give a shit if people don't like the setlists. That's up to them. If my opinion on the matter cuts a little too close to the bone, that's your problem. Instead of climbing up on your high horse and squeaking about how presumptuous I am to disagree with you, try dealing with it.

Oops, I put this in another thread - hmm, concert reviews - weird.
I went to a MOE. show last night - my first one.
Great setlist - was it the one from the night before - I do not know - I do not care.
I was just thrilled to be seeing one of my favorite bands - and hearing some damn good songs.
This topic popped in my head as I was watching the show - I thought about all the first,second timers at a Hip show - they must be having as great as a time as I did last night. They do not care what was played yesterday or tomorrow.

BTW, I've heard Pearl Jam mentioned as being fans of the Hip. Do they even know who the Hip are? Where have Pearl Jam mentioned the Hip?

I read your post and for the first three paragraphs I thought, maybe he is right. Maybe I am taking his comments to personally, that his comments may read with an edge but are in fact simply the flip side of the coin. I respected the presentation of your opinion and started to agree that maybe you were simply presenting a point. I didn't agree with everything, but the post lacked the sarcastic and condescending tone that the others had and I found myself feeling like I had you all wrong.
Of course I then read the 4th paragraph and saw that I was in fact right in the first place, that you do feel the need to post edgy comments with cutting attacks at people presenting their opinions.

I would never berate you like that, I don't know you but I do respect you enough to not do that. You have however failed to see that your posts have been from the position of someone who thinks they know what people deserve and tells them precisely what they can expect. That's wrong... in my opinion. I don't think a ticket gains only the right to enter a building. I don't think a legion of fans who follow a band should expect the bare minimum from a band. I don't think holding one band up to the example of other bands is an unfair measurement. Of course these are only my thoughts and I welcome you to make clear your thoughts on this matter...but try a little humility and acceptance this time

Last tour - either in Seattle or California - a member of Pearl Jam was there - not sure which one.

I'll jump in the discussion...
I've been lucky enough to hit Portland, Seattle and Minneapolis this tour, all within one week. Each show was with a different group of people who only saw one show (some longtime fans, some seeing the band live for the first time). To a man (and a few women), each stated it was one of the best live shows they have ever seen. By the third show, I found the setlists to be a bit redundant, but loved seeing the new material played live in intimate atmospheres, even for the 3rd time in seven days.
But being with the people I was with and the band I was seeing, all shows were thoroughly enjoyable and well worth the investment in tickets and travel. It was really fun to see some people become new fans of both the Hip and Sam Roberts. In the end, I think that's what it's all about. I think the Hip are still striving to capture new audiences, and if that means playing NOIS, Grace, 100th, Nautical, etc. every night, so be it. Those are the songs that got me into the band, and even after 14 shows, they still get me going.
This perspective is unique, and I realize many people can't relate to my experience of this tour and the setlists. I can fully appreciate what the band is doing w/ their setlists. Would I have liked to see some of my old favorites? Certainly. Did it take away from my enjoyment of the shows? Not one bit.

It is clear that neither my point nor my purpose are getting through here so I will make my last post in this topic.
If you read the last three pages of this topic, as well as some other posts currently being discussed in here, there are a number of us who believe the setlists should have some more variety. If we believe that then there must be a reason why we would feel this way.
At the same time, there are people who think it is just fine the way it is. There are reasons they feel this way as well, and I am beginning to see their point of view as I read the posts. I thought Buck made a wonderful point, and I found a lot of them same when I went on my hip roadie for IVL. I saw 5 shows in 8 nights and the setlists had a staple 12 - 15 songs and there were a few changes every night. I also saw each show with different people and they all enjoyed every show as well. I can't remember ever being at a show with someone who didn't enjoy it. So I truthfully see your point.
My last post obviously offended and I do apologize for that. I guess I felt somewhat attacked by previous comments and should not have taken such an abrasive tone. I apologize to anyone I offended, especially Skippy: while our argument was heated I never meant to offend, my apologies. Consider this post as me offically out of the saddle of my high horse.
This topic is something I felt strongly about and posted accordingly, I see both sides of the argument and understand why people feel the way they do. I hope that one day I'll get to here some of those songs I am yet to hear....but until then, I'll continue attending every show I can drive to and affors to and leave every show very energized by the experience.
