so there.....

It is not just the minor annoyance from readers, it is the fact that it takes up bandwidth for topics that have been covered many many times. No matter what, people who have already taken part in the past (same) lists still take part in the new lists. If someone were to just post on the old thread then people who have already responded wont feel the need to respond again...hence, less bandwidth.

If bandwidth is such a concern, why not do a purge of posts over, let's say, three months old? I'm involved in another forum which is considerably larger than this one, and they do a purge a couple 2-3 times a year. The moderator gives a warning about a week beforehand so anyone who wants to save posts has time to do so.

I agree with the last guy in that I think it's silly to dredge up old, stale posts and attempt to resurect them...it just doesn't work effectivly.

If bandwidth is such a concern, the only real solution is to clean this place up. Then, if there isn't a space issue, those of you who are so annoyed at repeat topics can simply ignore them and let others respond as they like.

I never realized this before, but there are posts that go back to June 2002...that is nuts. No wonder there is a bandwidth issue!

Here goes:
1. Day for Night
2. Fully Completely
3. Up to Here
4. Phantom Power
5. In Between Evolution

My choices are defined by the top songs on each album. IMO, Inch an Hour and Nautical are the 2 best songs by the Hip, bar none. I'm a sucker for the Rock. In addition, the low-key arena feel I get from IOD and Yawning really only hint at the overall strenght of the tunes. And in just 2.5 weeks of owning IBE, I'm falling in love with it. Gord's lyrical evolution is taking some getting used to but Rob and Paul are a guitar tandem that is becoming hard to beat.

As for live...the Martyr's boot from 1998 showcases the greatest version of Grace I've ever heard.

This list can be fluid except the top two (so far.)
Bootlegs may have influenced my opinions on some albums particularly PP (of particular note is the Camp Trillium show because they were so tight and the recording was good)

1) (TIE) Day For Night --- No album anywhere can beat this one
1) (TIE) Phantom Power --- But nothing can beat this one either
3) In Between Evolution --- I love this album. Not sure yet where it'll end up
4) Fully Completely --- Full of 'classics' Coulda been produced better
5) In Violet Light --- Maturity of the band is evident here

Road Apples should be in there too.

Also Battle of The Nudes and Coke Machine Glow. Nice work.

Been tracking this. Hard to find lists amongst the people bitching about this thread, the people bitching about people bitching about this thread, and so on. But enough to get a consensus on how the albums are ranking overall. Here's where it stands, when you take everyone's votes into account:

1. Phantom Power
2. Day For Night
3. In Between Evolution
4. Fully Completely
5. Road Apples
6. Up to Here
7. In Violet Light
8. Trouble at the Henhouse
9. Music at Work
10. EP (no votes, no big surprise)

(not counting LBU and Gord's solo work, since not everyone considered them for their lists)

Other than M@W being below IVL, I'd say that's a very good representation of my opinion...

- jonprice34 - 10-08-2004

I think I would go with
1) Day for Night-- Nautical best somg ever
2) Fully completely
3) Road Apples
4) Phantom Power
5) In Between Evoluion

- jonprice34 - 10-08-2004

oops I meant song beside Nautical

1. Day For Night-Something about the sound of this recording keeps bringing me back...dark, melodic...not only my favorite Hip album, but in my top 5 all-time.

2. Road Apples-Cordelia...Fiddlers Green..."spittin' from a bridge/just to see how far down it really is"

3. Phantom Power-Ripping rock songs, and a beautiful close to the album with Escape is At Hand and Emperor Penguin. I've noticed Membership gets hit hard on this board as a song many have problems with, but I've always loved it from a pure listening stance. No technical reason, just enjoy the song.

4. Fully Completely-Lots of solid songs...solid rock album...

5. Up To Here-A classic debut album...can always pull it out and remember why I really love this band.

Honorable Mention. In Between Evolution-This album is like wine...the more I listen, the better it gets. Each listen finds me picking a new favorite song. Today, it's Heaven Is A Better Place...tomorrow will probably be somthing else. Eventually I think this album will be in my Top 5, just not yet...
