The Horrible Esthete Wrote:That they never play this has always bothered me a great, great deal. I can't understand it. It's almost like they want to forget they ever wrote it or put it on a record. But why? It's among the best things they've done.
Whatever the answer is, it must somehow relate to the subject of my other Great Bother in regard to TTH: the gradual and incremental de-emphasis of the Bobby Baker "lead" in the context of a dual-guitar, five-piece rock outfit. Something changed somewhere along the line, and it happened earlier in the band's tenure rather than later.
Anyway...."Fight" is the only song I'm chasing. Having seen somewhere in the ballpark of 60 shows, I've seen almost every studio cut performed; if I haven't seen something, I obviously don't care enough about it to know that I haven't. There's a possibility that I even DID see them do "Fight" somewhere here in Ohio in the very early '90s, yet somehow do not recall? I doubt it, but it's possible.
My memory is also fuzzy going back that far. But I do have one specific memory of them playing "Bring it All Back" and "Born in the Water" at the Max Bell Centre in Calgary in '92, and my mind was blown. To this day that's the only time I've ever seen them play either of those songs. But I've still never seen "Fight". Pretty sure they stopped playing it after '95. I used to have a great version of that tune on a bootleg somewhere with John Popper of Blues Traveler playing harmonica. Un-fuckin-real. Wish I could still find it.
Totally agree with your opinion on the lack of Rob Baker guitar leads on recent albums. Although World Container and We Are the Same did have a couple of nice moments (Last Night I Dreamed, Frozen in My Tracks), and I love the between-verse noodling he does on At Transformation. But you're right. They need to set him loose more often.

That version of Fight with John Popper is from ARA '95 in Markham, ON. My first bootleg and probably still my favourite. That tour was great (I saw them in High River, AB) because they had the audacity to open with NOIS. You would think them opening with that song would be the pinnacle of the show, but of course, it wasn't.

Opening with NOIS was pretty ballsy at that time, considering it was their most popular hit, and people absolutely lost their shit whenever they played it. Back then it was usually saved for the encore because of the hysteria it caused with the crowd. Nowadays people use it as a pee break song. It's kind of sad what's become of it. It used to be a beast of a song where anything could happen and new songs and lyrics would emerge from glorious bursts of improvisation. When I go to Hip shows now, it's the one song I hope they don't play, just because of how utterly boring it's become. And I really hate saying that, because that was the song that first got me hooked back in 1989.

I have been luck enough to have been a fan for a long time now and have caught many songs that today are probably and Impossibilium... Of course there are many that I would love to hear again and the reality is that although I did witness 'Get Back Again', I really have no conscious memory of those few minutes of my life... That being said, 'Bring It All Back' has always been one of my favs... Maybe we start a Bring Back Bring It All Back campaign?
Enjoy the upcoming tour! Hopefully we'll get some surprises...

Somebody's been to Detroit ... (?)
Nah, they just seem to bust it out often here in the Northwest.

goddamn greasy jungle, seriously guys WTF!?!?!?!?!
not like, it was a hit single...
also, they should have to play "Jungle Love" by Morris Day and The Time, right in the middle of it, to make it up to me for having to wait so long! MY GREASY JUNGLE LOVE, O-EE-O, O-EE-O-EE-O-EE-O!

For this tour (2012/2013) I'm chasing Lake Fever, which they played once on the US tour I think? Interestingly, Lionized in Vegas was the very first time I had every heard that song live in 50'ish shows. They do still manage to surprise you.
Overall, I'm chasing Membership, Apartment Song, and of course, Another Midnight. (I got Opiated and Emperor Penguin at the Massey Hall shows in 2009).

Was lucky enough to catch them playing "Fight" at the Kingston Blues Festival in 99. Similarly they had Charlie Musselwhite playing harmonica, was a killer version.

That would have been the last time they played it live.

Wow. WOW. Not
once in 100+? That's some tough luck... it's been played a documented 72 times (
see listing here). Though only four times since 2000, so I'm guessing you've logged the majority of your shows since the PP tours.
Guess I'll consider myself lucky to have gotten it SIX times in 40+ fewer shows!
04/14/2007: House of Blues, Cleveland
12/02/2000: Cobo Hall, Detroit
10/08/2000: Warner Theatre, Erie
05/12/1999: The Bijou, Toledo
09/26/1998: Agora Theatre, Cleveland (One of the best shows I've ever seen - they were white hot that night)
08/22/1998: Zoo Amphitheatre, Toledo
