I'm guessing its more to do with minimal rehearsals, and not being willing to deliver halfassed performances. It's the idea of doing less, but doing it well as opposed to doing more but not doing it all that well.
Perhaps you are right. Thing is the only time they do the greatest hits same set list thing is at the big shows up north. Lights are not an issue down south because they are playing clubs and theaters so they don't have the massive lighting rigs or the repeat set lists.

Let's not forget too that the repetitive greatest hits thing only started happening very recently (summer 2011). And all of the shows have been big outdoor summer festivals. The way we're all talking about this stuff, you'd think they'd been screwing the die hard fans over for years. I still say let's give them the benefit of the doubt and wait to see what kind of sets we get for the upcoming tour. The first 2 or 3 shows will tell us exactly what we're in for.

wow thank you everyone, i was hoping to get some wonderful responses when i posted this and there have been lots of really good banter. I am going to the toronto show on feb 14, may even be number 30 for me or close, i was thinking of not checking the sets for the entire tour just to be somewhat surprised. Even if it means not checking the setlists for the US tour at all. You have to figure that any tunes they play on the 'Evening With' US tour they could fit one or two into a 20 song setlist on the Canadian Tour. Is it justified that I even do that cause I always love checking sets.
I still say that if anyone or MAV could ever speak to them and make them realize that certain older songs and b sides they have done are absolutely unbelievable and for them to think it's garbage and never worth playing is absolutely ridiculous and hopefully thousands and thousands of fans would agree.
And just to give my two cents, here could be a realistic setlist on the upcoming Canadian tour that the hip could play with a new gem added in that would make anyone mad about recent setlists probably very happy and put any critic to rest
Music at work
Streets Ahead
Poets
New Orleans
We want to be it
Ahead by a Century or Lake Fever
The Lookahead
Modern Spirit
In View
100th Meridian
Man Machine Poem
Vapour Trails or Thompson Girl
Bobcaygeon
The Darkest One or Dire Wolf
Courage
Take Forever
Blow at High Dough
At Transformation
Grace Too or Boots or Hearts
Goodnight Attawapiskat
(just trying to be realistic obvious i have tough choices to make)
All dreams aside what will the next song to be dusted off just like fiddlers and 38 years old were back in 2006?

emperor penguin Wrote:Even though Rush plays the same setlist for the duration of an entire tour (because every song corresponds to a video on the screen behind them that is synchronized with their phenomenal light show) they vary their setlists pretty well tour to tour. The even played all of Moving Pictures last tour. You think the Hip would ever play the entirety of Day for Night or Fully Completely during a tour? I doubt it, even though it would be a smash hit amongst casual old school fans and die hards. You go to a Rush show and know exactly what they're playing. You go to a Hip show, and until recently, expect some variation. They don't have elaborate video's with Jerry Stiller and Joe Flaherty, so synching their setlist with their background video's can't be used as an excuse. Rush also plays for 2.5 - 3 hours.
The 2007 setlists were ok. Pretty repetitious with maybe 1 or 2 semi rare ones thrown into the encore and a cover (which they would have been better served replacing with one of their own rare gems). The 2009 setlists were much, much better, but I doubt we'll see anything close to that with an opening band and therefore a shorter setlist to work with, as well as being an arena tour.
I get why people see this complaining as whining. I'm not losing sleep over any of this, I just probably won't be going to any shows this tour. I can't afford it, and I don't place the same value on the product as what is being charged for it. It's as simple as that. Same reason, as a diehard Rush fan, I chose not to pay 150 bucks to see them at the ACC and haven't seen them since 2007.
I'd also like to point out that My Morning Jacket has one of the best light shows I've ever seen, they charge an incredibly reasonable price for their shows, and their setlists are virually indistinguishable night to night. Aside from certain songs from their newest album, absolutely every other song is different and this goes in runs of 4 shows. Their last tour even had a thing where you could tweet them prior to the show and they'd select a couple to add to the setlist that day. They were pulling out songs that would be akin to the Hip playing stuff from the EP. The amount of energy exhibited by Jim James on stage is equal to, if not more than, Gordie.
Good points about Rush. I certainly am not losing any sleep over the setlist thang, it's just interesting to analyze. This subject is always a hot one, not only on The Hip forums but on most other bands forums as well. It's fun to see what other fans want to hear them play. No way making every fan happy all the time. This is why we are fans of certain bands. Most of the bands and artists I am really into (more than causally).... I like their deeper catalog stuff. The singles usually are picked for radio by record people and don't reflect their best material. BTW...just recently started to get into My Morning Jacket....terrific band! :thumb:

I asked him about the Hips seeming reluctance to change up set lists. He says it is pretty much the industry standard to keep the same sets because of the lighting and audio cues. As a matter of fact he left the Cee Lo Green tour partially because of the ever changing sets.
This is entirely true...I knew a very experienced crew-guy who toured with the Hip for years, has done BNL and even Coldplay.
He says the Hip and BNL are 'off the charts' and had the highest respect for their ability to pull out whichever song from their catalogue on any given night, as opposed to everyone else who does the same stuff night after night. Though it was a pain in the ass for himself he also spoke highly of the kinds of guys they bring on tour with them to pull that sort of stuff off.
Now that I've talked to him at length about it, I see that pre-planned production at just about every show. They're hard to watch. I write music myself, I can't imagine planning performances to every drum beat, meticulously planning every moment of the show. That's not what draws people to music. It really makes you appreciate guys like the Hip even more. Even if they have scaled down their repetoire recently.

Just a thought... Perhaps they don't have their a team crew on board for sporadic summer festival shows and don't feel as comfortable mixing it up.... Not to mention the other reasons we listed preiously

I respectfully disagree. Despite the repetitive setlists of late, I don't get that impression at all. To me these guys seem just as focused on the band as anything else they happen to be doing as side projects or solo efforts. A lot of the material on the new album can easily stand alongside their best work in my opinion (We Want to Be It, Now for Plan A, Man Machine Poem, Modern Spirit, The Lookahead). This is not the work of a band just mailing it in. I've been bitching about the setlists just as much as anyone here, but I have a feeling we're all gonna be pleasantly surprised when the official tour starts in November. The summer festival season is officially over. Now it's time to get down to business.
I too disagree, the guys love playing together. They are more than just a band. They also like doing their solo stuff, why can't they do both without being criticized. They are not doing this just for the money, if they were they would not do free shows. If it was for the money they would not stick around after shows to sign autographs and shoot the shit with whomever was waiting for them. They have fun when they are on stage. Lately they have been playing alot from the new album, duh...they are promoting it and there is nothung wrong with that. On top of that they have mixed in some old. What do you expect thou? They can't play everything, as much as I would enjoy that.....they are just people. Very talented people with families and somewhat normal lives like the rest of us. Let's cut them some slack and enjoy them while we still have them....

The only lighting production I have ever noticed with the Hip is during Blow at High Dough when they do the big intro rif and the lights all go on. with Last of the unplucked gems when gord sings "im kinda dumb and so are you" they have the lights shine out onto the audience. Other than that I dont really see the lights matching up to anything. A hamster could work the Hips light show.

I've seen every tour since the mid 90s and the Hip have always had either first class lighting or a capable lightman who knew all the songs and cues (when using the house light system). A few of tours, the lightshow was unreal (phantom power arena tour and the 09 club tour)... However, the lights would have nothing to do with inserting some album cuts in the setlist....not that complicated.

Exactly. I can't believe that lighting would be used as an excuse for static setlists. I know it's an extreme example, but Phish have arguably some of the most varied setlists in rock, as well very engaging and complex light shows. Mind you, their lighting director (Chris Kuroda) is a legend, but it still strikes me as a very poor reason to not vary a setlist.
My hope is that this "setlist" was meant for festival-type gigs only and will not be indicative of the upcoming tour.

There's 0% chance this is a greatest hits tour.
Also, its time to play Coconut Cream.
