Lizard King commented that The Hip should put out CD Singles - Oasis have done it with great success, why can't our beloved Hip do it? Well they used to, but they were hard to find, and in the later years they rarely contained anything of interest aside from just the single track.
I'd buy the singles.
And lastly, I'm sure that TicketMaster are willing to take more money to create a Hip Club ala Ten Club. Let's get'er done. I'll take member number 1 to prevent any arguments.
I think most of us have been pining for a "ten-club-type" Hip Club for quite some years. I hope it materializes at some point.

my grand delusion is through that type of "club" ...winning some sort of fan perk and playing golf with Paul and Gord S.

What the f*ck I mean is that everyone wants more money. If someone offered you more money to do your job, would you not take it? If you felt you were underpaid, would you not ask for more? It costs more to run a show these days..... THAT's what i'm talking about. People like you and me that work at the theatres, that drive the trucks, that set up the shows ALL MAKE MORE. Therefore, the money must come from somewhere. So, it comes from us.
As for leaving Universal, do you think there are tons of other labels with Universal's world wide exposure ready to snap up the Hip? I doubt it. They are all looking out for the "next big thing."
Would you stay with a boss that paid you while "screwing" your customers, or quit outright and possibly not find another place of employment?
I'm not saying people don't have the right to get angry at the ticket costs and all that. I'm not fond of paying it either, but I choose to because they are my favourite band. You have chosen not to, and voted with your wallet. You have every right to.
I'm just saying all this talk of the band "screwing" us has probably many more levels to the idea (and people involved) then we think or know.
Yes, I'd take more money at my job if offered, but my co-workers would have every right to b*tch about it if they didn't get a raise and I did. I don't see how the cost of running a show has anything to do with me, though. I don't think I really have an effect on inflation and the economic state we're in. I'm not sure the people who work at the theatres make more, either. Anyway, that's neither here nor there, I suppose.
I'd probably stay with my boss even if customers were being shortchanged, yeah. Having said that, I would have to accept it if some of the customers had bad feeling toward me.
I agree with your last sentence. It isn't just a simple issue of Gord, Rob, Gord, Paul, and Johnny deciding to get one over on the fans.
Like I've said before, The Hip can do whatever they want. We live in a capitalistic society where you have a choice to try to get as much money as possible, which is fine. I just don't want to hear about how fan friendly the band is all the time, that's all. It's just a little annoying.

Gangrel makes some good points. I agree the HipClub was a total failure. But since MAv took over the webmaster duties, I think things have been much better. Personally I've had nothing but good experiences with past presales, and the "Live From the Vault" series is easily the coolest thing they've ever done. I'm just as pissed off as anybody regarding the crazy ticket prices for the Canadian shows, but unfortunately ticket prices for any big band or entertainer are faily high these days. Even the fan-friendly Pearl Jam were charging up to $85 for tickets to their last arena tour in '06/07, and a buddy of mine just paid $75/ticket to see the comedian Russell Peters. The Hip don't sell as many records as they used to, but they're still arguably the top concert draw in this country as far as rock bands go. I'm sure that the more intimate venues combined with the extra-long "evening with..." sets have something to do with the ticket prices as well. If they were playing a regular 16-song set with one or two encores, the ticket price would probably be much cheaper, as they were the last time they played soft-seaters back in '02. Anyways, despite being ticked off about tickets and all this crap with the bonus tracks, I'll live with it. I still love this band as much as I ever have. I'll most likely be buying tickets to one of their California shows this summer. Tix for those shows are roughly $30 U.S. and I'll get a road trip out of it. Right now I just wanna get my hands on the new album. I'll download the damn bonus tracks eventually.
I realize that many, MANY bands charge outrageous ticket prices. That's a common thing. I still don't like it. Thing is, The Hip have played Canada so many times, it's kind of like, how many concerts is enough? Pearl Jam coming to Canada is more or a rarity than The Hip playing here. I'd probably pay $85 to see PJ, but only once. I might pay to see Neil for $90-$100 again, but probably no more after that. I've seen The Hip a fair amount of times, although not nearly as many times as most people here have. I know for a fact that they put on a great live show. Consumer surplus, they (whoever it is that hiked the prices) are looking to capture it. Fair enough...I understand that its out of character, but that does not mean that its not justified. They are still our band and still very good to us. This record has been the longest wait between new releases...a whole 2.5 years! Morning moon streaming form their website. MAv and the backstage sneak peaks they've showed us. We've been spoiled. Complaining about 99cents to buy a bonus track that you'll be able to download free by April 8? please.
I mean, really, its not THAT bad. You can still see the hip for 50-60 bucks...just not front row at Massey hall.
I bet prices will go down at the next leg of the tour.
Sorry guys I know this ain't a popular view...and believe me I have the utmost respect for you all, but I really don't think its THAT bad.

Speaking of high ticket prices, I've never seen anything like this until I was trying to show my girlfriend how to purchase tickets on ticketmaster for the general on sale. The only person I could think of that had general on sale on right now was miss Britney Spears (ya i know). $37.50's not that terrible for a "major pop star." The right-up-front super-platinum seats are pretty outrageous, i'll grant ya.

I remember speaking to Johnny Fay about commecialism, and the fact that the band had agreed never to sell one of their songs for a TV comercial based on principal. Maybe the ringtone thing is different,but, I don't see it. Most people I speak with have nothing but bad things to say about phone companies. Why would the Hip use this as a marketing tool at this point in their career? Sorry guys, but, it seems desperate, and not in tune with the Hip I remember back in 89.

I didn't preorder through iTunes (because I like having the physical CD) and I didn't preorder with my ticket purchases (because I want that CD on April 7th). I'm convinced that those songs will eventually become available to the generic public one way or another. I know I'm going to hear them but owning three copies of a CD just isn't going to be how I'll do it.

I pre- oredered a copy solely for the bonus disc, figuring 14.99 is what I'd drop just for LFTV4, nevermind WATS.
And because I know it won't get here on the 7th I'm going to Best Buy to pick up a copy. So I'll have one for the car and one for my house I geuss is a way of justifying it. Kind of sucks but w/e, I'd rather rebuy the whole Hip catalogue than one Kanye album or some shit.

The Hip are putting on three show's in three nights just a short drive down the Colonel By Drive and only kilometres from where I live, but I'm not attending a single show. Economic disparity isn't the reason, nor is frugal expenditure readjustment. I do find the prices to be disgustingly inflated (I spent $70 for a GA admission to Neil Young two months ago, and $120 for four nights of music at the Bluesfest, which included The Hip, The Weakerthans, Primus, Wintersleep, Snoop Dogg (what a disaster), and dozens of others), but I simply am not willing to sit in the NAC, which is a great venue for ballet, to watch the Hip. Nearly every die-hard and casual fan I have found in the last four days is dumb-founded as to why the Hip are playing the NAC. I get the 'intimate', and 'acoustic-friendly' environment these venues provide. But, for me at the least, the intimate nature of a Hip concert comes with spending the night with 30,000 people cramped on a downtown Ottawa lawn, and the desire for 'acoustic-friendly' confines is lost when the band pulls-out anything with an electric guitar.
And more to the economics of such a decision. If the Hip could sell out any national arena, for instance Scotiabank Place, to full or near capacity in one night, why bother playing a venue that holds 2,500 over three nights? I'd prefer one night at Scotiabank Place, and one night at the NAC, and I'm sure others would prefer one night at the ACC, and three nights at Massey Hall.
Maybe I'm a relatively young 'Hip' fan, and I appreciate that some others will sincerely enjoy the environment that the NAC or a similar venue can provide, but I'm not there yet. I want beer stains, bass-drum-induced vertigo, ruckus, apologies, make-ups, apologies, nonsense and deafening distortion when I see the Hip.
I'd spend the $100+ for an 'Evening With' tour date at the Scotiabank Place (just as I did in 2001) because I think that the experience isn't strictly held in the music, but more so in the environment in which it is held. I am not ready to attend a rock concert (and The Tragically Hip are very much a rock band; THE Rock Band in my crooked books) in a ballet hall while I sit on my hands with the comfort of padded seating designed for the elderly as they enjoy matinee ballet, or the NAC Orchestra...
...Still hoping that I find a Bluesfest addition on their tour schedule...
