This is relevant to this discussion (specifically Chris' comments about golf on TV):

I don't play golf, and really don't care to watch golf (much like I don't care to watch hockey), but stopped on US Open while channel surfing yesterday afternoon (much like I stopped on that Stanley Cup game, as I mentioned earlier in this thread), but instead of gradually losing interest (as i did with that Wings/Pens game), I became riveted (thanks to Rocco/Tiger). I simply could not turn away from it.

It had less to do with the sport itself than it did the drama. Wow.

But while watching the Open, I did come to the realization that golf is great on TV, because they can cut from shot to shot to shot...there's very little "downtime".

I wouldn't watch if it weren't a major....but as long as Tiger is who he is and does what he does, I'll probably be watching the back nine on "major Sundays" in the future.....

i was rooting for rocco today. tiger is really annoying to me lately, especially this weekend with his little hissy fits(throwing clubs, kicking his bag and his poor, poor knee...he is coming off knee surgery if you didn`t catch the 165 times the announcers told us about it) the guy is 30 some years old and acts like a teenager at times. Every time he hit a bad shot you would see the wincing because of his knee, but sinking a 15 foot bird he was pumping his fist, jumping around and the wincing was non existent. all that said, i still can`t argue that the guy is talented as all hell

I couldn't agree more. Tiger is undoubtedly the best golfer in the world today but his antics are a bit much at times. Rocco on the other hand has to be one of the most likable athletes on earth. You really have to feel for him, but he had puts to win on 18 both Sunday and Monday and just couldn't get it done.

I agree with you to some extent. If a basketball player can make a free throw when everyone behind the basket is going crazy, and a quarterback can manage to call plays when 80,000 fans are screaming their asses off, etc., it doesn't say a lot about golfers (and tennis players) that need dead silence in order to compete.

I do agree that golf can be played by anyone just swinging a club and walking around - but that is the same as someone trying to play hockey who can't skate, or basketball and you cant dribble or whatever.

To play at the highest level it takes extreme skill, to be able to finely adjust your body for each type of swing for every situation is an amazing feat.

But this argument could go on forever, I hate Nascar and think its ridiculously simple and dumb, but nascar fans would argue it takes a lot of skill and strategy.

I do agree that the absolute silence needed to compete is sometimes ridiculous, but on the other side of that - Tiger being able to stop his 130mph swing, at mid downswing when a camera flashes is one of the most amazing things i've seen in "sports" in a while.

yes, but one thing i admire about golf (and yes, I play, and agree it's more hobby then sport, but I digress)

If you don't play well, you don't get paid.

If you are in the NHL and have a million dollar contract, you get paid whether you get 100 points, or 0.

This discussion has exploded recently on national and even local sportstalk shows because of the question being asked (I think by ESPN): "Is Tiger Woods is the greatest athlete of all time"?

Of course, the argument is entirely subjective and speculative. Many of those weighing in have been qualifying their own opinions by distiguishing "athleticism" from "skill", which makes sense to me. There's no doubt that Tiger has a level of skill, as far as golf is concerned, that is arguably greater than anyone else to have played golf professionally. Furthermore, his skills allow him to dominate his respective game in a way that few if any have been able to do throughout the history of any "sport" (I personally consider golf to be more of a "game" than a "sport", but no one ever wins that argument).

While that might all be true, I still find it hard to agree that he is the greatest "athlete" of all time. I've never seen the guy run...or throw...or do anything outside of the parameters of swinging a club that might be "athletic". Who knows how great some of the fantastic "ball sport" athletes might have been at the game of golf had they been indoctrinated at the age Tiger was? What if Bo Jackson had been herded onto the links at age 6 and never played football or baseball? What if Lance Armstrong had been receiving continuous tutelage from a golf pro since he was old enough to hold a club instead of getting into cycling? Perhaps, if Jackie Robinson had focused on nothing but chipping and putting instead of being an All-American in 4 different high-school sports, he would have been even better than Tiger.

The main argument I would make is this: I do not know of a single person who first excelled at the professional level in golf and then moved on to excel at another sport (particularly a "ball sport"). However, there are gobs of athletes who excelled at a wide variety of sports who, later in their careers, had or have become excellent golfers. Many have said that John Smoltz, for example, could easily have made the pro golf tour had he focused to doing it.

To me, to be classified as a sport you need an offense and a defense.........

Golf to me is not a sport. I love playing it, and I love getting out in the nice weather, but to me I do not classify it as a sport in the true sense of the word.....
