People in Whistler and Pemberton have a couple new options for attending the Pemberton Festival to see Coldplay, Tom Petty, Jay-Z and others this July: They can sign up to volunteer and receive entry for free, or they could soon purchase single-day tickets to the event.

Shane Bourbonnais, president of touring and business development for festival producers Live Nation, confirmed on Monday (May 19) that plans are underway to offer single-day tickets to the three-day music festival. He said an announcement is expected in the next couple of weeks that single-day tickets will be sold, including each day’s roster of acts so people can choose which bands they want to see. Ticket prices for a single day haven’t been determined.

“Right now it looks positive for single-day tickets (to be offered),” Bourbonnais said.

The decision follows the sell-out of camping sites for the festival, which runs July 25 to 27. The goal was to have as many weekend passholders as possible staying on site to space out traffic to the festival grounds, and to keep from having all ticket holders moving on and off the site each day, he said.

Camping is available for up to 20,000 people and so far 17,500 spaces have been purchased, Bourbonnais said. The remaining 2,500 spots are being held for volunteers, staff and vendors who will be working on site and need a place to stay.

As of last Thursday (May 15), more than 30,000 weekend passes had been sold and sales are still going strong, he said. While the site could potentially hold more, Live Nation officials have decided to cap the inaugural festival attendance at 40,000.

“It’s shaping into a sellout,” Bourbonnais said.

People from all over the world have purchased festival passes, with sales coming from Europe, Asia, Australia and the U.S., he said. According to stats from about a month ago, about 2,000 tickets had been sold in each Whistler and Pemberton. About 4,000 locals so far is a “really good representation,” Bourbonnais said.

The festival has also garnered high-profile media attention with articles in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Rolling Stone magazine, among others.

“We’re very pleased about the reception this festival has got,” he said. “It’s absolutely unbelievable.”

Volunteer applications are now being accepted, with application forms available on the festival’s website (<a class="postlink" href="http://www.pembertonfestival.com">www.pembertonfestival.com</a>) under the event info tab. Applications are due by June 30.

Bourbonnais said more than 500 volunteers will be needed for everything from setup and tear down to directing traffic and helping people put their tents up in the campground. Many volunteer duties will be focused on welcoming people to the festival and setting a “good vibe” for the weekend, he said.

“(Volunteering is) a great way to enjoy the festival and be a part of it,” he said.

For festival-goers who choose to stay in Whistler, a shuttle service was announced last week to take people to and from Pemberton each day of the festival. The idea is to reduce traffic congestion, minimize pollution and offer people worry-free transportation, Bourbonnais said.

A three-day shuttle pass is $90, or the equivalent of $15 per trip, which is affordable in consideration of the cost of a taxi between Whistler and Pemberton, he said. Tickets are available at <a class="postlink" href="http://www.pemfestshuttle.com">www.pemfestshuttle.com</a>.

Complimentary buses will be available to transport people from the festival site to the Village of Pemberton and from some of the parking lots to the campgrounds so people don’t have to walk in with all their gear, Bourbonnais said.

The Pemberton Festival is a multi-day, European-style music festival that includes two outdoor stages, a dance tent and a full festival village with vendors, wash facilities, a kids’ zone, farmers’ market and more. More than 50 acts make up the three-day festival roster including Nine Inch Nails, the Tragically Hip, Death Cab for Cutie, Interpol, Flaming Lips and Wolfmother.

Even though the Hip only play for an hour at 6:00 - I would love to be in front of this stage today.

While at a Canadian festival, Das Hip should be on after the Lips, you did not just ask who are the Flaming Lips.

Their a fairly influential band, hailing from the OK (Oklahoma), who have toured endless over the past two decades, backed up Beck, and produced album after album of indie rock gorgeousness.

I could continue, but I shant.
