Quote:--Paul's background vocals, which definitely have hindered songs in recent times
Could you provide some examples? It seems to me that Paul's background vocals are hardly being used at all recently.

You looking for a dust up :rambo:

Paul's backup vocals are never a bad thing. They need to utilize him more in my opinion. It would be cool to hear him sing lead on something in the future.

I completely agree with Tiger the Lion with respect to the acoustic guitar playing. Gord is not a guitarist. His guitar playing was poor at best during his WaterKeeper Tour.
As for the Langlois comment, I disagree. I have personally wanted Paul to put something out on his own. Although, Gord's voice is unique, I believe from what I have heard, that Paul's voice is better. In fact most people in the music business believe Gord is a poor excuse for a singer. Obviously, he gets by on theatrics. There are other members in the band who have said the same thing with respect to Gord.

I have sat back and watched y'all bash Bob Rock and World Container but this crosses the line.

Ocean, Rink, In View, Pretend, Family Band

Others, from a while ago, include Silver Jet, Music At Work, Gus, No Threat, If New Orleans is Beat.

Correct me if I'm wrong on any of these but I'm pretty sure Paul sings in each of them and I'm pretty sure that his voice is unnecessary in each one.

I'm well aware that Paul kicks major ass in general, but I could do without his background vocals more often than not.

Don't tell Paul what I said. I don't want any trouble from him. 8)

I don't mind seeing Gord play his guitar while doing solo work and I don't really have a big problem if he needs to play his guitar (for vocal reasons probably) for live Hip shows, either. I just HATED the acoustic guitar on World Container. Seriously, Yer Not The Ocean DOES NOT NEED an acoustic guitar on the record. Same goes for In View, among others. There's just no need for it.

I respectfully disagree about the second part you mentioned. In all honesty, I wouldn't mind hearing Paul's voice on LEAD if he wants to sing a song or two with The Hip or do songs on his own, but I prefer Gord's voice to Paul's. I would rather hear Paul sing lead on one song if it meant no background vocals from him. The people in the music business who think Gord is a poor excuse for a singer are probably the same old geezers who said Neil Young could never make it on his own. Oh well, everyone has a right to an opinion. I've never heard any of the members of The Hip say Gord is a poor excuse for a singer, though. I'd need to see some proof of that to believe it. Paul has a beautiful voice and they should let him sing lead every once in a while.

Re: Happy Birthday World Container!! - Roy-at-tth - 10-31-2008

I remember the first time i heard in view I thought it was a joke. I grew to love it very shortly after (after many listens) but I definitely first thought that the band was pranking us. First thing I thought was that it sounded like a Raffi Song. Ring ring ring Banana Phone!

What would Downie do come concert time? The tambourine?

That's ridiculous. I've never heard anyone in the band say anything like that about Gord, and I've been following these guys since 1989. How 'bout some proof?

Ya thats total bullshit, and to say the band said it as well Confusedcratch: fuck that :rambo:I've got almost every major magazine/interview and read alot more on the net and not seen anything resembling a negative comment towards Gord from the band.

Re: Happy Birthday World Container!! - BakersBrew - 10-31-2008

This was said off the record (no bullshit), cmon these guys have records to sell, they arent going to shoot themselves in the foot. It was a comment made by a certain person in the group who is often amazed at how musicians who continue to make a meek living playing clubs have a far superior singing voice in comparison to Gord, yet can't make it to the big stage. Gord's voice is unique, and certainly legendary in Canadian music. So is Neil Young. But do they have great singing voices? Most people in the music business would say no.
And Ive always wanted to hear Paul sing lead, but, then Gord would need to play tambourine I guess.
