Montreal offered Smyth more money than Colorado, but as McGuire on TSN said the tax situation there most likely put him off. Im not familiar with the tax laws in Quebec, but its having an effect on the teams ability to sign players and it sucks ass, every year we offer more money for players and get shut out, this sucks. I dont know who they plan to sign now or trade and whats to become of Souray but this team is not looking good for next season right now. Were such a low scoring team we really needed someone to give us a boost, and if Souray leaves they wont be able to replace his goals. I think they might as well blow the team up and trade Saku and Souray, go high for next years draft its supposed to be a good one. I bet Koivu is kicking himself for re-signing now, Gainey fed him a pile of BS to stay "...were commited to building a winner around Saku.." What a joke..

Damn French media, damn French tax laws, damn you all!!!!!!

The Oilers have signed Michael Nylander. I was really hoping the Rangers & Michael could of worked something out before July 1st, he was a perfect fit here in NY, a perfect compliment to Jagr's style of game. Hopefully things work out for him in Edmonton, he's one very talented hockey player.

The flip side to all these signings is what of the teams who lost players?
The Sabres must be reeling after losing two top line centres, those are going to be big holes to fill, but if they can find a decent centre they still have a potent offence and Miller in net that could carry them, but they lost more than points with Briere and Drury and that will hurt them the most. The Devils lost Gomez and Rafalski, but knowing Lou and the way he operates it wont be long before those spots get filled by someone, the still have Brodeur and thats half the team right there. The Islanders got it the worst, not that they were a powerhouse to begin with but they lost Yashin, Smyth, Blake, Kozlov and Poti thats alot to lose in one day, for a team that wasnt that great, it hurts more, they will be bottom feeders next season right beside the Habs if things stay the way they are. If the Rangers can get Shanny, Avery and Lundqvist back I think they will be the team to beat in the East this year for sure, the Flyers wont be far behind. I expect more from the Penguins, and (hold on Leafers)I suspect the Leafs will be better with Toskala, Blake and Bell in the lineup and will make the playoffs! Goal scoring wasn't the Leafs biggest problem last year, shoddy D, poor goaltending plus add some injuries on top of that, thats a perfect recipie for missing the playoffs, they seemed to have fixed some of the problems, they need to dump McCabe or Kubina for someone more reliable. There Leafers, that's the nicest thing you'll get from me all year, bask in it.

As for the Habs they stink right now, and probably always will as long as players dont want to play there, they only way it seems they will land a star player is to draft really really high by losing or trade (unlikely) or if they make a blockbuster deal, but really with what we have in our lineup who could we really get back thats better, unless we give up the farm and overpay? I think this article sums it up pretty good..

Actually, I know most wouldn't realize it given that the lazy Toronto media can't seem to grasp it, but the Leafs' D was fine last year. They were 8th in the league shots against, but 25th in GAA. In other words, the D were pretty effective at limiting other teams' chances, but the piece of crap between the pipes was Cloutier-esque in puck-stopping ability. That's why it was so tough to stomach Raycrap coming out and saying he thought he had a good season because "he" won 37 games.

That's why I love the Toskela move. As for Blake, well, we'll see. But I'd prefer Blake at $4 million per than Ryan Smyth at $6 million per, especially since Smyth is approaching that age where most guys who have taken the kind of beating he has start to break down physically. And I mean let's face it: $30 million + for a guy who has never had more than 70 points and has never scored 40 goals?!?

Anyway, I know this is popular place to bash JFJ, but I like what he's done so far this off-season: added Toskela, Bell, and Blake while dropping Yanic Perreault, Jeff O'Neill, Mike Peca, Travis Green and Bates Battaglia.

Well, at least now we've got one player with name value. Lookin at the current roster on the Oilers' homepage, we've got nobody. I don't even know who'll be captain next year? Staios? Pisani? Moreau? None of them seem all that qualified.

I have to give JFJ credit he did more than I thought he would, word is they arent totally done yet either, I can see them trying to move a defenceman perhaps. But they are better now than before, I see them moving up the standings into the playoff picture, only if Toskala plays like he should.

Kind of makes you wonder what the lockout was for, if the cap keeps rising like it has, really where will it end? I was convinced the league would be better after the cap, and that it would be more competitive and fair, but it really hasn't changed that much.

It'll be interesting to watch the Philadelphia Flyers this season, they've made some huge, huge changes. Daniel Briere, Kimmo Timonen, Scott Hartnall, Jason Smith, Joffrey Lupul...plus it'll be the first full season for goaltender Martin Biron. I think Lupul should rebound & i think he'll turn into a quality pickup for the Flyers. Briere should be a good fit too, whether flanked by Gagne/Knuble on his wings, or perhaps even Lupul.

I'm not sure of the cap numbers for the Rangers since the signing of both Scott Gomez & Chris Drury, but it would definitley be nice of they could add another defensemen to the mix. Both Henrik Lundqvist & Sean Avery will be resigned & are in line for raises, while all signs point to Brendan Shanahan resigning for around the $4 million he earned last season. They cleared up a bit of cap room by letting Karel Rachunek walk, and by not resigned Jed Ortmeyer.
Hopefully Gomez & Drury will help give the Rangers more grit on their top 6 lines, something that has been lacking the last 2 seasons.

This must mean Souray is on his way out. He'll do a good job, he's reliable and gets some points. We still desperately need a centre and goal scoring winger bad. Hmm so the Nylander to Edmonton wasn't right. I think Washington will be a much better fit for Nylander. The Caps have now picked up 2 very talented playmakers to play with Ovechkin in Semin in Nylander & V.Kozlov.

I'm really looking forward to watching Chicago this season, I'm hoping they finally make it back to the playoffs this year.

Lots of signings coming in this evening...Radek Bonk & Greg de Vries to Nashville...Ladislav Nagy & Michael Handzus to Los Angeles.

I've always liked Roman Hamrlik, and I think he's a good pickup by the Canadiens....but is he really worth $5.5 million a season???!!

Probably not, but that's what Gainey is forced to do to get players there most of the time. Its money that would of went to Souray anyway, at least we have someone capable in his place thankfully.

But in even bigger news, hold on to your seats...the Habs have signed Bryan Smolinski!!!!!!!!! The final piece of the puzzle is in place now, look out NHL.

:roll: What a joke, this franchise is a shell of its former self, I swear when Roy left that franchise was cursed like the Red Sox or Leafs. It used to be the class of the league and the place every player wanted to play now its a laughing stock, I dont think I can take it anymore. Im going to put the names of every team in the NHL (except Toronto) in a hat and draw out a new team to cheer for...stay tuned for the results.

boy Im pissed off today.. :x

And don't forget Nicklas Backstrom, who is supposed to be the best Swedish prospect since that Forsberg guy.

And you can blame Bettman all you want Oil fans, but the fact of the matter is that players don't want to play in Edmonton. Buffalo is the only city in the NHL that players name more often as the city they wouldn't want to be traded to.
