Ballgame Wrote:Since so many people play guitar and want to contribute I’m just gonna go ahead and lay down Membership. I started it to a click AND a drum machine (just in case). I only got through the first verse before it was bed time for my son. So I’ll post it once its done and if someone wants to contribute it will be there. I’ll only do the rhythm and whatnot

I'm in for Membership. I can record the lead in the next couple days. When you say you're playing the rhythm, are you strumming Em D G D during the verse or playing the picking part?

picking. well was gonna try to strum on the left and pick on the right. But as of now I recorded two tracks at a time and panned them....picking.

But I use the F# bass note on the D. So its Em, F#D, G, F#D

I'll post what I have hopefully tonight and you can tell me what you think

But if you want the leads their yours! Membership is the song I can play best and love the “River over flowing its banks” lyrics.
I coach a high school hockey team so time has been hard to come by so I’ll make an effort to knock this out

I've been following this thread, but because the project doesn't need three dozen guitar players....

Personally, I'm always open to alternate versions, especially acoustic versions. I may be alone in that. What I would suggest for anyone following Chris's suggestion to go ahead an upload anything you've been working on is that anyone doing alternate versions also upload an info file -- key, tempo, etc.

And I guess this also means that we may need people to volunteer to mix/produce the final tracks, so Chris isn't stuck with the expectation that he'll do it all. Although I do know how much he enjoys that expectation in re boots....

Incidentally, I can do vocals, although the only decent mics I have access to are at my buddy's home studio, where it is almost impossible for me to arrange a time to record. So no guarantees.

I’m for alt versions of songs too. I don’t think they all need to be exact. If it’s good its good. I don’t think there are too many guitar players. Just partner with someone or just start a song and someone will join when they can. I’m assuming this is an on going process.

I’m sure some of you aren’t fans of Zakk Wylde but I am. He did this mini tour of acoustic songs where he completely changed the original..the only thing left from the original song was the lyrics and the key they were in. I was impressed it blew my mind. I have a CD of a song with the 6 songs on it if anyone is interested.

back to the topic, lets remember to have FUN.

Thanks skippy! And the text file inclusion is a great idea.

As long as the project stays smallish, I'll do whatever I can as far as editing/mixing/etc goes. It's something that I've always wanted to do, just never had the material or need!

I'm up for any acoustic/alternative versions. I absolutely LOVE hearing any acoustic versions of songs. I couple years ago I had a whole acoustic Hip setlist figured out. Mostly in my head, but figured out. I'll see what I can put together once I get a decent recording system together.

I downloaded Audacity, but haven't had a chance to pick up my acoustic pick up or my electric. I recorded through my computer mic. I tried to record another track by listening to my first track through headphones and playing along while recording. When I do this my second track is about a quarter second off. I hope plugging my acoustic guitar in to the audio input will help fix this problem.

Once I have that fixed, I'll start uploading my stuff.

As for decent gear, I have all kinds, the only problem is I'm not close to anyone on here Smile

- tragicallysteve - 01-11-2007

I hope someone can help me with this:

I plug my guitar into my audio input. I've switched recording settings in the control panel from microphone to input......... Nothing records.

Any help/suggestions?

do you have a soundcard?
thats going to be the key to playing back or recording.

I use Cool Edit Pro 2.0, very easy to use. Id give you a copy if I knew how to

Stereo vs. Mono.

That's proving to be my issue right now. And it might be the same issue that Steve is having.

When I was reading about the cables I'd need to record directly it kept saying mono-patch cable. Not thinking it was important I just tried using the stereo patch cables that I have and they don't work - except when I pull the plug out slightly killing the stereo connection. Sad

- dreyfuss - 01-11-2007

A guitar or mic uses a mono signal, but in mixing that signal can be panned L or R or centre

Some effects pedals (phaser, etc) can run stereo signals but I don't believe anyone here is using them for this project

- chris - 01-11-2007

I'm using a Line6 Pod Version 2.0...

And I figured out that it isn't my cable, it was that the volume on the output was all the way down... Doh!

- dreyfuss - 01-11-2007

Ah, I see

I don't know all the options for recording to the computer, I've never recorded to the computer myself but our old Bass player had Pro Tools and an Mbox which was 2 channels, then he got Cubase and a Firepod and that was 8 channels.

I have a Roland studio (8 channels at a time) and will most likely record to that then burn wavs of the drum tracks to a cd and go from there.

Or I'll limit the amount of mic's I use to 4 and run them into the R4 and then USB them to the computer. I'll figure something out when the time comes.

- Naga - 01-11-2007

If I'm needed, I could sing lead vocals or play acoustic guitar. I'm pretty good at singing, and I just got a half decent microphone.

- dreyfuss - 01-11-2007

Kinda off topic but if anyone is looking for a good studio mic for a good price, I highly recomend the AKG Preception 200.

It's about $240 and is an amazing mic, it comes with a shock mount as well. Finding another mic this quality will cost 2 to 3 times as much. My only complaint is that it didn't come with a pop screen.

I know most people won't be interested in this but if there is anyone on here that has a home studio this mic would be a great addition, if you don't have a studio vocal mic already.

- tragicallysteve - 01-11-2007

Hmmm..... now, no only can I not record any sound going in to my computer but, there's no sound coming out of my computer.

Sounds like I'm having sound card issues.

I'm getting a new computer as soon as bestbuy.ca gets it in stock, so I may just wait patiently for that. But I really wanted to do this tonight Sad Sad Sad Cry
