Fair enough.
Jimi's version is certainly more impressive, both in terms of instrumental execution and vision, but it is essentially an adaptation that could one might consider to fit into a different genre (in terms of style) from that of the original (folk-acoustic rock to electric blues-rock). Often, when a solid song is covered so masterfully that it then becomes legendary, like Jimi did with "Watchtower", subsequent covers tend to work off that adaptation -- in other words, they "cover" the cover itself, becoming a sort of 2nd-generation cover.
DMB's version is less inventive, for sure, and less interpretive; though it seems to be intended to stay more true to Dylan's composition, injecting a little more passion and fervor to the original without straying so far from the conceptual and stylistic premise. I respect and admire that effort, and furthermore, I appreciate the improvement in the overall execution / performance of the work, as DMB, as a collective, is a more accomplished group of musicians (from an instrumental standpoint) than Dylan himself and those working with him on the original.

This one probably hasn't been heard by too many but I think Sarah Harmer did a wonderful job of "Waiting For A Miracle" (Cockburn).
Also, for all you Trews fans, they do a version of "Bohemian Rapsody" that tickled my fancy.

I agree. I saw them open for Robert Plante in October 2005, and they played Bohemian Rhapsody with an incredible amount of energy. They did it justice.

I like Warren Zevon's cover of Raspberry Beret and Nick Cave's rendition of Disco 2000 is haunting! Honorary mention for perseverance (certainly not for excellence) has to go to Will Shatner.
On BBC Radio 1 over here they do a thing called Live Lounge once or twice a week... a band or artist come in to promote their new album or single and they play a song from it live, they also have to play a cover version... some of the best include KT Tunstall doing Get Your Freak On (Missy Elliott), The kooks Doing Crazy (Gnarls Barklay) and teeny pop band McFly singing I Predict A Riot (Kaizer Chiefs).
