I've said it a dozen times already, and I'll say it again. The Hip are like fine wine- they only get better with age. IBE is their best album since Day For Night, and although I'm not too keen on the Bob Rock idea, I'm quite confident that the new album will kick our asses just like the last one did. As well, they're still one of the best live bands on the planet. Want proof? Check out the new DVD. Or better yet, go see 'em next summer after the new record comes out.

I can see three big reasons their sales have flagged. First, that many people know them from the aforementioned few big singles from their early albums, and write them off as yesterday's sound; second, that they are an established band rather than the new, hip thing; third, that they have refused to keep cranking a formula (despite strange reviews saying they do, based on the fact they still "sing about hockey").
Of those things, only the third has anything to do with the music itself. And the refusal to crank a formula is a good thing.
Couldn't have said it better myself. I agree completely!

I agree, I never know what to expect when they put out an album, but Im always like you said..pleasantly surprised after I hear it. Just when you think the band couldn't get any better, IBE comes out and its like wow, where did that come from? I cant wait for the next record.
It's like a tradition for me to hear a new Hip CD and say, "Dammit! That's nothing like their other music." Then, about 2 days later, I'm singing along to all the songs and wondering if Rob Baker isn't really Jesus - or atleast
Divine in some way.
And I don't even consider myself a 'rabid' Hip fan. I've never voluntarilly watched hockey, painted a maple leaf on my face or screamed "GORDIE!" at the top of my lungs.

we discussed the new box set at work today . we think the writing on a lot of the earlier cd's is great, and possibly unmatched for beauty, heart and love of this country. maybe as i've gotten older i can't wrap my head around these new songs as i did in the past. i will still buy the band cd's, and attend thier shows . hoping to hear the songs i enjoy the most..and maybe starting to enjoy some new ones as well bob

I wish I could add something intelligent to this post... but the fact is skippy has already summed it up perfectly, so there is nothing else for me to add other than to say I also agree with his comments.
Boy, I bet you were all glad I posted this, eh?

Motley Crue's new album is being produced by Bob Rock, so do you think maybe the Crue will appear at Roadside??

Good lord, man. Don't even joke about things like that. Hiring Bob Rock to produce your record is one thing, but the thought of the Hip traipsing around the country with a bunch of douchebags like Motley Crue is just plain wrong on many, many levels. It's bad enough the Hip had to share the stage with them at Live 8. Yuck!

Fair enough! I understand what you're getting at -- let's see what the boys have for us this spring. Welcome to hipbase!

It would be a wonderful way for the band to announce, without having to come right out and say it, "We're a bunch of washed up has-beens from a bygone era, creaking through the motions of touring like five reanimated zombies. Please watch to ensure that none of our body parts actually fall off as we play. Brains! Brains! Brains!"
But I'm thinking this isn't the message they'd like to convey to the public ... or one that we'd like to hear....

My Postings At Work - 01-10-2006
*sigh* There are alot of great posts in this thread that don't need repeating. But I want to say this:
I love the Hip- and it goes far beyond the music. It's the introspection it gives me; it makes me think on a different level and brings my attention to issues I might not have been aware of, or gives me fresh perspective on it- everything from WW2 to hockey. It gives me a unique sense of being Canadian and each and every time it feels like its reaching out to me on a personal level.
Someone mentioned Black Label Society- wow, how much further across the spectrum those two bands are. It drives me crazy when I ask someone why they like a band and all they can regurgitate at me something like "because they ROCK" or some such nonsense. No real meaning behind lyrics; no substance. Just ear bursting riffs. Of course I like those songs from time to time, but they just don't, you know, "do it for me".
Back when I was in college everyone was a Hip fan and that was alright. After PP and M@W came out I noticed a significant paring down of these fans, and dare I say, I liked it. It's not that I didn't want to share them or anything, but if I want to discuss the Hip I like to do it on a deeper level, and not just commiserate how there'll never be another song like "Grace, Too" or how boring (repetative) their new songs are. I feel you've missed the point if you see it like that.
It's the main reason I decided to join this board and not just lurk.
But really, even with a new producer I believe someone like the Hip would have way more control over the end result than most other bands; I think some simply don't care to (or have the ability to). I personally don't think the boys would release something that isn't, in essence, The Tragically Hip.

here's my theory:
Old Hip: Beer drinking, balls to the wall rock and roll + a completely different music industry back then= high record sales, mucho airplay
New Hip: More poetic then anything, can probably drink wine while listening, and fighting for airspace with a billion other bands = lower sales and jettisoned bandwagon jumpers.
I like their sound now, but even I have to admit it's not what's "hot", and hasn't been for years. So, that just leaves all of use who are into "what's good and not just hot".

Funny... that pretty much describes my life journey LOL

You missed the point on the BLS comment. My point was that I love the Hip becasue they are creative. BLS is also a fav but I am starting to not like them because every song is a carbon copy of itself.
I am a person that the tone of the music is more important tan the lyrics so I like a lot of stuff. Kieth Urban anyone? haha
