Well, they know more about what works for them than I do, so I'm going to stay in my happy place and assume that this will all work out OK.

Found this interesting...

Chris Tsangarides who produced "Fully Completely" was known as a Brit, Glam Metal Producer before he worked with the Hip producing acts like Judas Priest, Yngwie Malmsteen, Helloween, Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy among others.

Seems to me everything worked out well enough when they worked with him.

Compare that to Bob Rocks past with the Cult , Metallica and others there are some similiarities.

Sure we all blame Bob Rock for making Metallica suck, but lets be honest there were some catchy tunes on that Black album. It was a succesful album and considered by many as one of the best of the decade. I am not even a huge Metallica fan but i can understand the pain that the pre- "black album" die-hards must have gone through at that time wondering what happened to their heroes.

And about OLP.... i love them but Mike Turner lost it after Naveed. Clumsy was good awful.... as was Spiritual Machines.

With the Gravity album they returned to radio airwaves with some good singles. IMO the album sounded great and Bob Rock worked wonders with a band that was going through some changes in peronnel.

If i had my say i would have definitely gone with Adam Kasper again as i love the feel of IBE.

I am sure Bob Rock will work magic with these guys, the same way other producers did.

If they want to start selling some albums again, which I assume they do, then Rock is probably a good choice for producer

I look at this as a really good thing--for Bob Rock.

After watching *Some Kind Of Monster* I ended up with deep compassion for Bob, an obviously decent guy in the middle of all that drama. He's *earned* a stint with a mentally-stable band who can make a decision without screaming obscenities at each other.

And if he starts coming up with really silly poppy ideas they'll all look at him kindly and say, "I don't think so, Bob."

Either that or Paul will kick his ass.

It doesn't matter who produces the album! The Hip are the Hip. It's not like he's writing the music for them -- the album will rock because that's what they do. No producer is going to make a band who's been around for 20 years all of a sudden suck! No worries! In my opinion, at least. And if the album is badly produced, the songs will still rule live. And that's really why we're all here.

Great point, I have so much faith in the Hip and their music Im not the least bit concerned. I doubt the album will be badly produced or sound terrible I cant see the band letting that happen, if they aren't satisfied with the final product or the way things are going during the production, maybe they will send Rock packing, I just can't see it happening. I will say it right now the album will kick ass and sound great, I guarantee it! :thumb:

This may explain why it's not Kasper. No knock on Kasper or the production of IBE, but the band is at a stage when the critics love to dump on them, they are looked on as yesterday's thing, and their album sales are slowing down. They no doubt want a mid-career breakout album that sells like hotcakes and establishes them as a force to be reckoned with.

And no matter how much we as fans may like IVL or IBE, the Hip are a long way from the mid 90s when they dominated the airwaves.

Just to summarize...
Adam Kasper:
Pearl Jam, Foo Figthers, Queens of the Stone Age, The Watchmen, Nirvana, Soundgarden...

Bob Rock:
Simple Plan, crappy OLP, the Moffats (???), David Lee Roth (??? Bet he wishes he could erase that from his portfolio), Cher, and Metallica (well, those are good albums).


You can also add the Hip to Kasper's resume as well (IBE of course). But man oh man, Bob's resume sucks somethin awful. Maybe he's producing the Hip so he can get a little more street cred, or just simply work with a band who actually writes intelligent music. Whatever the case for this unbelievably odd pairing, I still have faith that the Hip know what they're doing, regardless of my personal feelings about Rock's production style. I don't think they'd let him screw with their songs or the way they go about doing things. They hired him, therefore the Hip are his bosses. They won't let him influence their music in a way that they're not comfortable with.

And yes, obviously I'm still trying to convince myself that this will work out, lol! Forgive me, but I just love this band so freakin' much, and I don't want some mainstream hit-making producer f**king up a good thing. It'll be really interesting to re-visit this thread after the album comes out.

Well, I spoke with Gord D. today and he said he was VERY happy with the sessions that just happened. They went so well in fact, that they were extended several days past the original sheduled time.

He's super excited.

i find it interesting that nobody's mentioned The Tea Party yet...


i know a lot of you didn't like seven circles, but i thought it was a pretty good album (not their best by far), and that the production sounded spectacular...especially on the singles...i wonder if he is going to try to make the hip a wee bit heavier...

Thats awesome MAv! I cant wait to hear it!! And along with what TDC said, if it makes them a bit heavier thats not a bad thing at all, I hope he can bring out some of that rock and roll spirit they have and make it sound great Im all for it. And The Tea Party's Seven Circles was a great album, one of their best imo. Am I the only one who is excited here?

of course i'm excited for new hip! i think all of us are, we're just concerned that Rock might lead the boys astray...i'll give you this though, i'm quite interested to see how this turns out...
